My HR monitor is the only gadget I have too. Zwift picks it up via ant on my phone when I'm doing a session on the turbo, and when I cycle outside my ancient but totally reliable Garmin 305 saves all the info.
I keep an eye on my Max HR, and my averages ... I too trained way too hard for too many years for IM racing ... hr tracking keeps me honest too AND it allows me to safely sprint max on the turbo for short bursts now I can no longer run sprints. And that keeps my genetic tendency toward diabetes under control
Recently went back to an analog watch. The “smart” watch was a distraction in more ways than one. The only other tech I use for health is an Eight Sleep for the cooling factor, the tracking metrics I just ignore.
Thanks Mark. I too believe that as we age, it's important that we continue to push ourselves, but without damage. Do you have a target percentage of your max HR for your bike rides (or other intense cardio activities)?
