For me this was the most pivotal article that you wrote Mark. As a former coached IM triathlete I had spent years in this chronic cardio zone for multiple hours a week. I had not long retired from racing, but continued to train. What a joy to discover I could actually start building muscle and become lean on so much less 'exercise'!
Now the issue is trying to burn the fat accumulation, again, this time due to menopause, a heap of external life stresses and a set of genes predisposed to diabetes!
Focusing again on a weekly sprint session on my turbo, but need to build weights back in.
Not denying the impacts of low intensity cardio but the notion that earlier humans did not engage in frequent distance running is entirely false. Persistence hunting is believed to be an incredibly common form of hunting which is where humans would chase an animal until it died of exhaustion or was too tired to move.
Does social dance work as the slower version.? Going back ti hunter gatheres. I doubt there was steady hiking. They needed to route find, scout for territory. Pause when in danger. So it seems like irregular but continous exercise is closer to the likely hunter gatherer pattern.
I wear a garmin watch that tells me a vo2 max. after having my first child I stopped long distance running and just wear him and hiked 1-3 hours 3-4 days a week. I did hill sprints once a week and lifted twice a week, one lower body one upper. My vo2 max went up for the first time in years during a period of time I thought I was focusing on family.
