“To inspire people to be their best and love the journey so they get the most out of life and make the world a better place.” – Benj’s WHY: the reason I get out of bed in the morning. Ok, if I’m being honest, that’s my second reason. The first is my home-made quad espresso (black, of course!).

My journey hasn’t been some monumental before-and-after story, but more an EVOLUTION (Grok-style). I grew up out in the “woods” 100 kilometres (60 miles) outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I was always a super active kid, playing every sport in school, and then getting home and continuing the sports non-stop with my brother. My parents both got in on the act often, and were always super supportive. When I look back, our family was about half-Grok back then without even knowing it. We didn’t watch TV much (just some Hockey Night in Canada on the weekends), always had home-cooked meals (some food choices have since been adjusted!), and did a ton of stuff outside and in nature. Both of my parents are retired teachers, so we learned how to learn, problem solve, question authority, and investigate.

Hi, my name is Mike. I haven’t always been overweight or obese. In fact, when I was a child and teen I was skinny. To the point of being teased frequently because of how skinny I was. No matter what I ate or how much of it I ate, I couldn’t gain weight. Fast forward to January 2017 and I was at my largest: 350 pounds, barely able to fit into 4xl shirts and was about to have to purchase 48 waist pants because the 46 I was in I couldn’t button. I had to put them close, fasten my belt, and hope the pants didn’t slip through and unzip.

Contest Poll: Grokpose 2018 For $1000

Earlier in the challenge, I asked people to pose like Grok for a chance to win a pretty epic prize. The rules were simple, but the ingenuity and thought put into every submission were far from it. So after much posing, primping, and staging, we chose two finalists that channel the spirit of Grok himself!

Picking a short list of favorites was challenging, so the Worker Bees and I threw our favorites into a pot and chose the first two.

Today I’d like to give my own introduction for our success story. She’s a former Mark’s Daily Apple success story (you can read her original story here). I was 40-years-old, 205 pounds and only 5 foot 6 inches. I ate whatever I wanted. Which usually meant a sleeve of cookies, a quart of soda, a bag of gummy bears….pretty much whatever. Twelve years before I had been a slim fit Marine and had since put on 60 pounds without notice. My vision was getting bad, my sleep was never sufficient, my motivation non-existent. And obviously, my marriage suffering from my lack of interest, poor disposition and dwindling testosterone.

My journey is a bit of a roller coaster, and starting back in 2011. I had reached my all time heaviest, 250 pounds. At that time I decided to make a change. I started training for a 5k (my last 5k) and read Robb Wolf’s “The Paleo Solution.” I started losing weight, pushed myself to run on a treadmill at my company’s on-site gym and got ready for my Disney 5k through Epcot.

Prior to this, I would experience abdominal pain, irregular stool, and if going out to dinner, I would have to go straight home before having to get to the bathroom. Let’s just say that if we weren’t going straight home I got very good at knowing where the bathrooms were at different commercial locations. Along with this, I had high blood pressure, coupled with the abdominal pain (which I thought was an ulcer) and went looking for a doctor to test me for celiac disease.

At the end of 2013 I was getting ready to begin my last semester of college, but unfortunately I was quickly closing in on 310 pounds at 21-years-old. I knew that I needed to make some changes if I was going to enjoy this life that I was given. So I embarked on a journey to lose weight and I went about it the best way I knew how … Calories in vs. Calories out. I began restricting my caloric intake to ~1,200 calories a day and trying to exercise as much as possible. I would run close to 30 miles/week and try to play basketball or raquetball on top of that to burn the maximum number of calories possible. My diet consisted of relatively low carb, low fat, low sugar blandness that was miserable to eat, but I was determined to lose the weight so I willed myself through it with excuses like “ I lost the genetic lottery, so this is the only way for me to be healthy.” I was successful too, in 5 months I lost over 90 pounds and was leaner than I had ever been in my life. As the months ticked on, I found it harder and harder to maintain the success that I had found.

Six years ago, I was a freshman at Kalamazoo College, majoring in biology and tentatively planning to go to vet school. I was known for my ability to pack away refined junk food and not gain a single pound. I was a two-sport collegiate athlete, starting goalkeeper for the soccer team, acing my classes, and working in a research lab. By all measures, my life was wonderful. That is, except for my eczema.

My wife and I went Paleo 1/1/2016, initially guided by The Whole 30.

My wife lost weight, and we both passed through carb flu hell. We became virtually illness-free and enjoyed extra daily hours of energy…but I gained weight.

I was committed to grain- and sugar-free living, but confused about my extra pounds. A colleague suggested The Primal Blueprint, which I confess I stayed up all night to read.
