The 2010 Primal Challenge is Coming…

Success is much easier when your friends are cheering you on. And in a month, you’ll have an entire community right beside you as you take the plunge into Primal living. I’m bringing back the 30 Day Primal Challenge this September. For 30 days, MDA will transform into a hub of reader-generated content and activity, where you can read about how others are going Primal, watch videos of people cooking their favorite Primal meals, and start your own 30 Day Primal Challenge journal. Whether you’re new to the blog and still a little timid about the whole “ancestral health” craze, or a seasoned veteran with a closet full of Vibrams just looking to add some more Primal schwag to your collection, September is the perfect time to actively participate.

And yes, there will be prizes.

The PrimalCon Primal Blueprint Fitness Challenge

The exciting grand finale of the fitness agenda at PrimalCon was the PBF Challenge at Oxnard Beach Park. Here participants conducted a timed high-intensity performance test consisting of a challenging, non-stop sequence of basic PBF body resistance exercises that work various large muscle groups to the brink of exhaustion. A protocol was given for Novice, Intermediate and Advanced levels, allowing participants to choose a challenge most appropriate for them. While the emphasis at PrimalCon was on welcoming all to a completely non-intimidating atmosphere (participants broke into sub-groups by self-reported fitness level for the Sprinting, Strength Training, and Play sessions), we did stage a friendly competition for each sex and fitness category at this particular event, and dispensed some cool Grok-logoed awards to the various winners at the closing brunch.

It’s 2010! Let’s get this year, nay, this decade off on the right foot. This will be the decade that you hone in on what makes your body tick. This will be the decade when you develop a lifelong strategy of health and wellness that works for you. Believe it, commit to it and act on it.

Contest: What Did You Learn This Year?

It’s December 31, the last day of the 2000s. It’s always fun, and often quite moving, at times like these to take a look back and remind ourselves how far we’ve come, to recall where and what we were and how and why we are different now. These exercises can seem a little cheesy, but I think they’re quite useful. Some change comes so gradually that you hardly recognize it’s occurring at all. With a little self-reflection you can acknowledge that real change has occurred, be proud of it and own it, and then commit to further personal growth.

I was inspired by this Mark’s Daily Apple forum thread. In it forum user bonesheal asked, “What did YOU learn this year?” Seeing that Mark’s Daily Apple may have played a small part in raising the consciousness of the people that responded makes the experiment that is MDA all worth it. I started MDA over 3 years ago now with the goal to, as I say, empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigatng, discussing and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be trued about health and wellness. I’m thrilled to see that people are doing just that. And I look forward to continuing to provide the resources and this forum for change.

At this time I’d like to echo bonesheal and ask, What did you learn this year? List and share your thoughts in the comment board.

I’ll be choosing one lucky commenter at random to win the Primal Holiday Package. This contest ends when the Primal Holiday offer ends – Dec. 31, midnight.

Check back tomorrow for an all new contest! Grok on!

Contest: Guess My Body Fat Percentage

Before we get to today’s actual post, I have a challenge. At the risk of sounding like a carny barker, guess my body fat and win a Damage Control Master Formula. The winner will be the one who, before tomorrow’s post, guesses what the “gold standard” hydrostatic test showed my body fat percentage to be – to the nearest tenth of a percent without going over. (Submit your best guess in the comment board.) If several people guess the same number, we will draw a winner from that group. Malibu gym members are specifically excluded from this competition (’cause that’s where I had the test done). This photo was taken around the same time.

UPDATE: THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED

Final Contest: Raising the Bar

The Prize:

Would you rather have a pull up bar or a dip bar? No need to pick, if you win you get both! Get excited, because Ultimate Body Press is donating their full package as the final prize of the the 30 day challenge. No need to drill pilot holes into your doorway, the pull up bar pops right onto the door frame. And no need to clear out your garage, because the dip bar easily stores in a closet. Push up rings are also included in the package, which can be used with either bar. You can also follow the Ultimate Body Press blog for tips on healthy living and workout gear.

The Contest:

You’ve made videos; you’ve told stories. You’ve taken pictures of your meals, your groceries, and your refrigerators. You’ve quipped, joked, and Grokku’d. You’ve tweeted, facebooked, and newslettered. And most importantly, you challenged yourself and grunted, sweated, and cooked your way through 30 days of that challenge. All in all, you’ve done plenty of work. So today’s contest is simple. Leave a comment on the video post above and you’re entered to win.

To reiterate, comment on today’s VIDEO post (This is Just the Beginning) for a chance to win. Commenting on this post will get you nothing.

Patience… Persistence… Promise…

Believe it or not, we’re rounding the corner on our 30 Day Primal Challenge! It’s been an unbelievable few weeks of stories, support and success. (If you think we’ve motivated you along the way, just know you’ve done the same for us in our work. This is why we love what we do!) Tomorrow Mark will offer the official congrats and message for moving forward. Today, however, we thought we’d take a moment to reflect on the past month – your past month to be exact. Once you were here, on board, what got you through (e.g. a good friend, faith, fear, humor)? What did you find in yourself along the way? Are you looking forward yet? Every reader, as we saw in last week’s incredible posts, has a unique story, but we thought we’d tease out a few common threads. Let us know what you think.
