Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

It’s time for another healthy dose of inspiration from Mark’s Daily Apple readers that took control of their health and turned their lives around. Many thanks to Jason, Marti and Dan for sharing their stories with the community. If you have your own story and pics to share shoot me a line here. Happy Friday, everyone!

Hey there Mark!!!

Well for me it starts around Christmas of 2009. I was topping the scales at 339 lbs, I had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years earlier and taking several medications to help control it. Despite eating like the dieticians recommended I kept putting on more weight. I stayed sick constantly, never felt like doing anything and was just in generally bad health and I was only 36. I was so disgusted with myself when my mom gave me some money at Christmas to buy some clothes and I couldn?t find anything in my size.

Drug Free for the First Time in Five Years

During this year’s 30-Day Challenge I put a call out for Primal Blueprint Success Stories. Dozens upon dozens were sent in. If you’re looking for a bit of insight into how others have transitioned to the PB and how it has changed their lives, or could just use a little inspiration to end the week on, read Michael Wilson’s Primal Blueprint real life story below and be on the lookout for more success stories in coming weeks.

In July 2005, at just eighteen years old I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. At first I suffered just a few sharp sternum pangs, but a couple of months later this spread to my lower back. I was prescribed Diclofenac to ease the pain. Unfortunately over time both the pain and subsequent medication increased. In July 2010 I was suffering from pain in my sternum, lower back, upper back, right shoulder, wrists, feet, heels and legs. My body was constantly throbbing with pain and in the crueler winter months I had been known to use a walking stick on occasion to assist me around the house. I was unable to run, walking was always met with pain and life was becoming more painful and less enjoyable. The restriction in movement and exercise, coupled with the inflammation of the joints, meant that I put on about three stone (42 pounds) in weight from 2005 until 2010. This exacerbated the situation and didn’t do much for my self confidence. At this point I was taking an all time high amount of medication. Each day I would take a cocktail of two 200 mg Celecoxib tablets and eight 30/500 mg Co-codamol tablets. This was supplemented with a weekly 20 mg injection of Methotrexate – a drug that is used in larger quantities as an anti-cancer drug.

Here Was a Habit I Could Get Behind

It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I’ll continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!

I started living the Primal lifestyle “officially” on January 15, 2010. It was my first day of eating Paleo, and started training as well, working out a minimum of four days a week. Up to this point, I had been careless with how I ate (plus, I’m a pastry chef, and I took advantage of that). I wasn’t getting any exercise save for the occasional run; I had completed a couple of half-marathons but the last one had been in September.

My aunt had passed away earlier in January after a long battle with cancer, and I made the promise to myself that I would better my health and increase my longevity. Almost as if by chance, I read the New York Times article spotlighting the Paleo Diet, and started doing the research.

So on January 15th, I started out at 213 pounds, with a blood pressure reading of 140/78.

I’m No Longer Self-Conscious About My Body

My name’s Sri, and I’m a 29-year-old physician. During my high school and college years, I was on the “anti-primal diet”. Growing up in a South Indian vegetarian household, it was carbs, carbs, and more carbs. Rice, sugary cereals, pasta, ice cream and cake and cake. Probably 500 grams a day for years. No meat. Little-to-no protein. I was 5’7?, a bit over 200 lbs, with terrible asthma. It took me 12 minutes to ‘run’ a mile, and my confidence was at rock bottom. In 10+ years of college, medical school, and residency, I tried *everything* to chip away at my weight. Protein shakes, crash diets, cabbage soup, diet pills, two hour cardio sessions, two hour weight training sessions, zone bars, more diet pills. I put on some muscle, I lost a couple inches, but I was still out of shape and facing my physical (asthma) and emotional (mood swings, anxiety, depression) hardships every day.

You asked for it, so here it is: another round of Primal Blueprint Success Stories. Emails like these are basically why I continue to run Mark’s Daily Apple. It’s all about giving people the tools and resources they need to feel empowered to take control of their health, and in many cases completely turn their lives around.

Years ago I set a (lofty?) goal for myself: to personally play a role in helping 10 million people. If you’re one of the 10 million please let me know! If the Primal Blueprint has helped you in any way email me. It could be your story that helps others make the Primal leap. Grok on!
