Mark,

I would like to give you another success story to add to your expanding collection.

6 months ago I was 270 lbs, hypertensive, pre-diabetic, metabolic syndrome, etc. I had been aware of your site for a year or so because a political blog I frequent (lewrockwell.com) occasionally links to yours. I was intrigued by some of the articles but was skeptical and didn’t take it too seriously. I knew I was too large, uncomfortably so, and my cholesterol levels were out of whack, but I walked and biked, ate what I thought was a fairly healthy diet and didn’t think my overall health was very bad. Until my blood sugar levels started creeping up. Another New Year (2011) had come and gone without me even making a resolution to lose weight like I usually did.

It’s Not a Matter of If, It’s a Matter of When

For as long as I can remember I have been on the heavy side. I remember going through grade school being made fun of and teased because of my weight. I was raised in a traditional Hispanic household where almost everything we ate was either fried or refried. I grew up on sweet breads, sodas and gallon jugs of sugar overloaded fruit punch. Life as a teenager for me was a living hell. My life was headed in a direction that I could not imagine. I turned to food for comfort. I was an emotional eater and I was such a wreck because of my weight. I quickly ballooned up to 250 lbs. by the time I was 18.

I first took up dieting around the age of 14 when I attended a class for overweight kids that talked about nutrition, how to portion meals, what a mass of five pounds of fat looked like, etc. At that age I wasn’t really fat mind you, however I was starting down that slope. While I was motivated right after the class, old habits returned quickly and I continued to eat unhealthily. I come from a family where pretty much everyone has or has had weight issues. My aunt was morbidly obese and died of complications of type-II diabetes, so diabetes has a history in our family as well.

Mark,

My name is Ryan Lazarus and I have an incredible story. Sixteen years ago, at the age of eighteen, I crushed two of my organs in a serious sports accident. I had emergency surgery to remove my spleen and 60% of my pancreas. After a prolonged stay in the hospital, my athletic 160 pound frame was transformed into a feeble 120 pound skeleton who struggled just to get out of bed. After I was released, I participated in 3 months of intensive physical rehabilitation to regain my weight and treat the 8 inch incision scar in my abdomen. My life had been transformed in the blink of an eye.

Pictures Don’t Tell the Whole Story

Mark, I just got back from my endocrinology appointment when I saw the latest contest.

I’m no picture of health yet but things are looking a heck of a lot better than they did before I started on Primal Blueprint.

I’ll start at the beginning. Six months ago my type II Diabetes was completely out of control, I’ll admit I wasn’t taking the best care of myself -moving, starting up a new research lab, you know “life” had gotten in the way of finding time to eat right and exercise. On top of that I was taking medication for high blood pressure and a birth control pill that made me even more insulin resistant and making it so that none of my oral medications for the diabetes worked anymore. In short, I felt like crap and looked it too.

Went Primal, Ditched the Diabetes Meds

I’m 56 years old and have been a type 2 diabetic since I was 32. When diagnosed, I went on the American Diabetic Association exchange diet, which is 50%+ carbohydrates. Believe it or not, the diet worked for a while, because as high in carbs as it is, it was still fewer than I had been eating. Over the years I made an effort at taking care of myself, but medicines increased. At the first of this year I was injecting 10mcg of Byetta twice a day, 22 units of insulin at night, and taking 2 grams of metformin in the evenings. I was unable to predict what my body’s reaction to meals would be. I had frequent lows, because I was trying to maintain healthy blood sugars. I had been doing some studying – read Dr. Bernstein’s book, Taubes’ book, etc. (didn’t know about Mark then). Anyway on January 4th I began my first steps at becoming primal.
