Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

Reversing Half a Century of Poor Diet

My weight issues started in my teens, and each year added another few pounds. Seasonal allergies that started at 18 months of age did not help, as I discovered that eating sweet things made me feel better. By the time I reached my mid-forties I was having sinus infections at least twice a year, episodes of IBS, sleep apnea, rosacea, and allergies that defied every drug I could throw at them.

About that time one of my neighbors, a runner, was recovering from surgery and asked me to walk with him. After a few days of this he was back to running and convinced me to run as well. Eventually I got to the point where I could run for two miles without collapsing. The neighbor moved, but I kept running with our two family dogs. I had yet to achieve any meaningful weight loss, but I ran anyway.

It Felt Like a Rebirth Into Living

It all began back in March of 2011 when I stepped on the scale for my semi-annual military weigh-in. The scale menacingly peaked at 195 pounds, which seemed outrageous to me. Over the next few days I couldn’t shake a feeling of self-diminishment. I mean, here I was, fresh off of completing the Miami Marathon which had been preceded by 18 weeks of focused training and I had GAINED weight?! I was incredulous! I tried to rationalize it away by telling myself that the scale was likely off, or that my running shorts and socks probably added a couple of pounds. But honestly, when I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t see the guy who ran cross country and weighed 165 pounds back in high school and college. Heck, I couldn’t even see the “healthy” guy I thought I was 10 pounds ago. I was burdened by the feeling that my 30-pound weight gain was the start of an inevitable decent into outright obesity.

I’m No Longer Anxious About Not Having Food Available

I’ve been athletic and thin my whole life, 5’9″ 145 pounds. Nine years ago when I was 22-years-old I started noticing that I was running out of steam when road biking. The problem was solved with eating more, things like granola bars and gels. Over the next 8 years I kept having to eat more and more to feel satiated. I stopped road biking and going to the gym, I had no energy to be active even though I was eating tons of tons of food (carbs). We’re talking about eating four bagels at work, in addition to 3 large meals a day. Going on trips I would have loaves of bread on the ready.

In our Primal Community, most of us are looking to get back to our roots and thrive as our ancestors did for millennia.  We work diligently to realign our lifestyle while still functioning in a high-tech world.
We recognize the conveniences that many have succumb to, yet we choose a different and sometimes more difficult path knowing that it’s the right thing to do.
I didn’t always live the way I do now.

A Backpacker’s Journey From Weight Loss To a New Life Mission

One of my very favorite hobbies is ultra-light backpacking. I love being able to strap on a pack with the bare essentials and get lost in the woods for days at a time. For the longest time, I’ve been on a perpetual quest to discover and collect the lightest gear to make my outdoor quests as efficient as possible. I’ll obsessively get out a kitchen scale to weigh my equipment piece by piece, creatively looking for ways to cut 5 oz. here and 2 oz. there. However, for years I nonsensically overlooked the heaviest and bulkiest piece of gear that I was lugging up and down the trail…my 40 lbs of extra body fat. Duh!

My name is Matthew Gruttadauria, I am 22-years-old and live in Las Vegas, Nevada. For most of my life I have been a rather fit and active individual. I played sports throughout high school and college. Once I got out of college and began to work I started to gain a lot of weight and was always fatigued.

My typical eating day before I discovered The Primal Blueprint was fast food (mickey d’s, burger king, panda express, wendy’s) for all 3 meals of the day. All I ate was garbage and would eat candy and drink soda, and sports drinks (powerade, gatorade, coke). My diet was extremely poor and I was just starting to feel horrible all the time.
