I’ve Never Felt Better

I’m 33 and haven’t felt better in my whole life since converting to the Primal lifestyle. I’ve been living pretty Primal for the past four months now… prior to that I was still maintaining a healthy lifestyle according to “conventional wisdom” and was in decent shape. But back in March, 2009, my wife was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and forced her to eliminate all gluten from her diet… I wanted to support her as much as possible and so our entire house became gluten-free,… however, I was still eating whole wheat bread when away from our house. Then two months later a friend of ours introduced us to MDA and I recognized Mark from the P90x dvds… Reading on made me realize the health benefits and it helped me turn the switch on in my brain to go Primal…

I was initially contemplating whether I should, or even needed to switch to the Primal way. I mean, I had lost over 50 lbs on conventional wisdom and thought I was pretty healthy overall… my cholesterol was down,.. my excercise routines were good and I ate small meals six times a day. So I was pondering whether I should give it a try or not, but I took the plunge since it wouldn’t be too much different than living gluten-free. Ever since starting to go Primal, I’ve been able to eat about 80%- 90% Primal ever since, and I must say that it was actually easier eating the Primal way than trying to eat small meals six times a day. I used to have to worry so much about what I was going to eat and to pack my food everywhere I went… it just just plain ole stressful and tiring.

I used to be a long distance runner and a vegetarian. I was the epitome of health, or so I thought. I even hired a nutritionist to help me with eating during marathon training. She had me eating mostly ?good carbs? which was whole wheat everything with some vegetables and protein thrown in for good measure. My protein intake at the time was less than 50 grams a day. Fat, you ask? No way. My fat intake was negligible. That coupled with Gu, Gatorade, Cytomax, and carbo loading for energy and recovery was a sure way to go into sugar overload- which is exactly what I did. I had no clue about the dangers of low protein and fat for endurance events. I was following the advice given to me by my educated running peers, my nutritionist, and my doctor.

I made it through training by the skin of my teeth and toed the starting line with a wicked upper respiratory infection. This was the single worst idea I?ve ever had in my life. This would be the pivotal decision that would change my life forever. I finished that marathon in 6 hours and 37 minutes with bathroom breaks every few miles because I had diarrhea from the powerful antibiotics I was taking. It was only force of will, stubbornness, and sheer stupidity that kept me going. Well, it wrecked me.

Primal Blueprint Success Story: More Like Grok

For anyone that is now familiar with The Primal Blueprint, you’ll recognize both of the characters to the right. It’s our lovable Primal role model, Grok, and his modern antithesis – your average overweight and over-stressed American – Mr. Korg. (A quick aside: When I read “Grok” I hear it said in my head like “Grok On!!!” But, for some odd reason, when I read “Mr. Korg” I hear it said in the voice of Eeyore.)

In short, my goal with this site and the PB is to help people go from looking and feeling like Korg to looking and feeling like Grok. This is why I am always so thrilled to hear success stories: triumphant tales of people taking control of their health and lives.

I recently received a success story from reader Sterling. It’s the sort of response to the Primal Blueprint that makes all the effort worth it.

I Can’t Say Enough About The Primal Lifestyle

Hi Mark, I’ve been following your blog for a little over a month now, love it and looking forward to the book! My husband and I went paleo/primal on January 26 of this year on the advice of his sister, a pharmacist. In the first month, I dropped 10 pounds with no problem, down from starting weight of 168 to 158. (I’m 5’ 8” by the way.) As of March 1, I started working out doing three days of walking/running intervals and basic strength training on the other two days, with weekends off. Since then I’ve gained back four pounds and have been hovering there ever since. I may lose a pound one day, but gain it back the next, giving me a net overall loss of roughly six pounds.

I’ve been really good with the food. No problems getting enough protein, eating lots of raw & cooked veggies, no fruit, only olive, coconut oils to cook with and butter for fat and flavor. A typical day’s menu looks like this: 2-3 scrambled eggs, 1 cup mostly decaf coffee with coconut milk for breakfast; a salad with 4-5 oz. meat; homemade olive oil & vinegar dressing for lunch; a handful of almonds around 3; 4-5 oz. meat and raw or steamed veggies for dinner. I’ll admit I will have an occasional bowl of popcorn one night on the weekends, that is my one downfall.

Enjoying the Journey Every Step of the Way

After a healthy high school sports career (swimming, water polo, and cross-training), I went off to college and found that, like many people, I had a much harder time exercising without a tight practice schedule and all the camaraderie that goes with being part of a team. I made occasional forays to the gym and played some pickup ball now and then, but by 21 or 22, I was caught in the perfect storm of a backwards sleep schedule, way too many available calories, and a general lack of discipline (I was a largely self-supervising researcher at the time, and it turned out I was not a very strict boss!).

The “before” photo was taken during a family trip to Big Sur in 2003, and it definitely embarrassed me into action (that, and being invited for a run by the cute girl in my creative writing class). Having found the motivation I was looking for, I started running, first 1-2 miles, then 3-4, then 5, 6, 7, and immediately took off weight. I also began to get much more serious about vegetables, and took advantage of the local fish market to get hefty servings of Omega-3s. However, I was still stuck in some of the classic fallacies of modern diet and exercise: thinking that more distance meant better health, and that caloric balance was a simple, zero-sum game – i.e., eat all the pasta you want as long as you run it off. This continued for a few years.
