I Think Grok Would Be Proud

Hi, I’m Fisher, at my heaviest I was about 275 pounds.

From the beginning of my life I was always very active. I was always playing sports and my main discipline was martial arts, specifically Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do. Even after I graduated from college I was 150 pounds and a golf professional.

Shortly after I began my career as a golf professional, I became very ill with pneumonia. I went from running three miles a day in 20 minutes and benching twice my weight, to not being able to walk five paces without collapsing. Even after my recovery from the pneumonia, my lungs were still far from working efficiently. I was on the shelf for years. During this time I was eating with no restrictions. Anything was okay, so I soon began to put on the pounds.

My name is Ryan and I am a 35 year old father of two beautiful daughters, ages three and nearly two. I am also a loving husband to an amazing wife who has been an amazing support to me over the years.

Ever since I was six weeks old, I have been in and out of hospital with severe, type two, brittle asthma. This form of asthma basically means that I can be fine one minute, and go into a major asthma attack the next without warning.

Throughout my years at school, I was reasonably healthy. I even played state level squash in Australia and trained five to six days a week. I was also an avid outdoors lover. On weekends that I was not playing squash in competitions, I was out hiking and camping before heading back into the classroom for school on Mondays.

Primal eating gave me my life back. Allowed me to stay in shape, enjoy eating, and not suffer. Living the Primal life is now my passion, it’s become that topic I always bring up to friends and strangers that causes my wife to roll her eyes and shh me – well, Primal and Star Wars…

I was born with a leaky valve in my heart (split aortic) and an enlarged aorta. When I was a kid I was told I could never play contact sports, weight lift or really do anything a healthy North American (Canadian) boy wants to do! It was devastating to watch other boys play…

Going Primal Will Change Your Life for the Better!

I’d like to share my success story as one of your biggest overseas fans! I don’t have many pics showing the differences in appearance before and after my shift to a Paleo/Primal lifestyle that I really want to share with the world. As you may imagine, I’m not particularly proud of my old appearance back then, if you know what I mean…

Since I wasn’t very happy with my heath (high body fat percentage, many allergies, food intolerances, frequent headaches, blood pressure, etc.), I first tried the Zone Diet by Barry Sears. Before adopting a Primal lifestyle I was quite overweight and I was plagued with many health issues: allergies to pollens (a lot of them) and dust, frequent joint and back pain, frequent (almost daily) migraine attacks, difficult digestion, gastric reflux, sleep apnea…just to name a few.

Being Primal: The Sustainable Change I’ve Always Wanted

Note: I wrote most of this during the challenge last year, but stopped short of sending it in, thinking “I’m not done yet.” This last year has taught me there is no finish line, just continual betterment and progress for the life you want to live.

My primal journey started in December of 2011, when at 22 I was face to face with my unavoidable future. I was 241 pounds, 5’7”, had a terrible relationship with food, and had been overweight my entire life. Type 2 diabetes also runs in my family. I remember the moment distinctly: I was on a mini family vacation, at our hotel, and I watched my dad inject insulin into his leg. I was stunned. He had been diagnosed with the disease when I was in my teens, but up until that point had only needed pills. I was scared. For my dad, yes, but also for myself, because I knew that if I didn’t change something, then that would be me. That was my future.

Hope Has Been Restored: My 21-Day Challenge Results

My story is not so much one of success as it is one of hope. I do not have any drastic weight loss to report, I still cannot do a pull-up, and I still have difficulty sleeping through the night. However, after slowly attempting to go Primal in November, and fully committing to it through the 21-Day Challenge, I have already experienced positive results.

In my mid-30s, I began suffering from several random health problems, which slowly appeared over the course of two years while I was working at an extremely stressful job. I have a touch of Avoidant Personality Disorder, so daily life is very stressful for me as it is. Anyway, I went from exercising regularly, working normal hours, and having fun to not exercising at all, eating unhealthy foods, and sitting 11 hours a day.
