My story begins quite a while back (the year 2000, let’s say) when I was in my mid-twenties. I had been pudgy since adolescence, and my diet was mostly junk paired with inactivity. Before I cleaned up my diet, I was eating 2 toaster pastries (over 400 calories) or a giant bowl of cereal with milk for breakfast, a fast food meal of a 1/4 pound burger (510) and medium sized fries (380 cals) with a large diet coke for lunch, and then having a small fast food chocolate shake (nearly 500 cals) for dinner most days and maybe something else that evening if I got hungry. I never exercised. I actually avoided moving and went out of my way to not sweat.

When I look back on my life, I realize that I had hypothyroid symptoms for most of it. One I can recall clearly is that I was always cold. It could be 95°F outside and I would be freezing.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about twelve years ago, when I had my second miscarriage in a year. My OB referred me to a well-known endocrinologist in Los Angeles, who immediately ran tests, diagnosed hypothyroidism, and without blinking an eye, started me on Synthroid (levothyroxine).

The first indication that something was wrong with me was in 2003, at the age of thirty, when I started my period two weeks early. Since I had experienced normal gynecological health all my life until this point, I didn?t consider it alarming, and I figured it was a fluke. I finally went to the doctor when I started bleeding again just two weeks later, and I was having worse than usual menstrual cramps. I went to my doctor and his immediate response to my symptoms was to put me on the birth control pill in order to control the bleeding (which is a classic solution, in my experience, from uninformed doctors).

I knew I would be embarking on great changes in my life when I decided to document my photos of how I looked before Paleo. I was not shamed by my body nor embarrassed, however, I wanted to remember how I felt. My body felt expanded. I felt heavy and had pains and aches. I am still a work in progress but I am happy to show you the difference through pictures that my body has gone through due to changing to a Paleo lifestyle.
