I am unbearably angry! Wait, I apologize. That’s not a way to begin this story. Let me try again.

It’s January 2014. I find myself 39 years old, recovering from wrist surgery, and uncertain about my career. You see, I’m in the Navy, and they do not like overweight individuals. As such, I was looking at my previous 16 years potentially meaning nothing if I couldn’t turn things around. Unfortunately, I am clueless. I have listened to all of the recommended “good habits.” I am tracked meticulously by my job. I have attended the required two week course on fitness. I’m not an idiot, am I? How am I such a failure at this? Why all the cognitive dissonance? I have consumed the knowledge, tried adhering to all of the experts’ recommendations. I mean, it’s simple, right? Yet I was unable to reconcile my results and experiences with all of the advice, research and guidelines.

In December 2010, after 18 years of being employed at the same company, I lost my job. During my tenure with the company I never gave much thought to the negative impacts of stress and my eating habits. But suddenly I was unemployed, overweight at 322 pounds, and faced with the prospect of starting over at 39 years old. For mine and my family’s sake I needed to make some changes—not just in jobs or careers, but changes in every facet of my life. In February of the following year, after an unusually hard night of partying, a metaphorical switch flipped in my head after looking at the previous night’s pictures. It was time to act and the first step in my transformation was to take control of my health. I had been an active person prior to my management career but never really considered how diet and fitness go hand in hand. I went online, using a BMR calculator and determining how many calories I burned in a day. I researched how macronutrients created different metabolic responses in the body.

I always wanted to be an athlete when I was younger. I was an overweight teenager who admired the athletes. I had been a victim of yo-yo dieting and over-exercising (usually running) my whole life. One day—sick of the run/diet/lose weight, stop running/gain weight routine—I decided to pick up running again. But this time I immediately enrolled in a marathon thinking that it would keep me motivated. It did! After my first marathon I was hooked. I became the skinny athlete that I had so longed to be and qualified for the Boston Marathon way too quickly (it was only 10 months after my first marathon and only my 3rd marathon ever). I say “too quickly” because I spent four years of my life proving to myself that the first time was not a fluke.

What if I stopped procrastinating on writing my story? Why haven’t I written it so far? Is it worth it? Is it boring? Maybe yes or maybe no. If I don’t start, I think I will never know. As I fly from Houston to Europe, I’m getting it done. So what do I want you to take away after reading these pages? I want you to know my story first, then relate it to your own journey and why you are reading another story about weight loss. Is my story only about weight loss? I’ll let you decide.

First, I grew up in South America—a place where the culture encourages people to over eat corn, rice, and wheat flour (pretty much lots of refined carbohydrates). So when I was growing up, I was never skinny. I had a few extra pounds, but I was active enough to be strong. When I was 14, I fell in love with mountain biking and mountain trekking. The two activities became my sports and I would do them three to five times a week. But for my diet, I was still eating lots of food. So what was the problem? I was in my late teens, strong, never slim, but not fat. The catch was, the problems came later.

My name is Hilton. I’m Brazilian and was born in 1976 to a family of heavy drinkers, heavy smokers, and heavy carb eaters (they were heavy meat eaters too, a point I can’t deny). Many of them were obese and loaded with diabetes and hypertension.

As a kid, one could say I had the body type of a frog: skinny arms and legs with a big belly—and my diet was probably the source of the problem. Brazilians’ main meal is lunch, and classic Brazilian lunch is rice, beans, meat, french fries and tomatoes, always sided by soft drinks or very sweet juices.

Taking Primal to the Next Level

In January 2011 my husband and I began a primal lifestyle cold turkey, after many years of failed attempts at other diets and changes. We experienced great success with both losing weight and health improvements and were the MDA Friday success story in July 2012.

In April of 2013, we traveled to PrimalCon in Oxnard, CA, and met Mark and a whole slew of like-minded friends. The entire trip was very empowering and invigorating (and not just because of the ice cold ocean plunge!). On the plane ride home we decided it was time to start taking control of the way we wanted to live and do something about the growing unhappiness with the location of our home.
