Primal Tremendously Changed My Life and the Lives of Those Around Me

It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I’ll continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!

I have to start by thanking Mark Sisson for everything he has done for my life, my family’s life, and the lives of my clients. In the last three years, Mark has immensely influenced my life and my career.

I completed the Primal Blueprint Expert Certification course when it first came out. Among the several fitness and nutrition certifications I carry, I value this one the most. I have written Mark several times. and he has responded on more than one occasion. I imagine the email traffic he gets is enormous, so this means a lot to me. I have read and enjoyed his work and the work of others in this community (Good Calories, Bad Calories, It Starts with Food, The Paleo Prescription, and more). I make jokes with my wife that Mark should hire me or give me a cut because we use his products, I refer many of my clients to his website, and I have started a successful weight-loss group at the gym I work at using primal principles. (I am not joking Mark, let’s talk!)

50 Pounds Down and Never Turning Back

I feel like now is the time for me to finally share my success story, though I will be the first to tell you the journey certainly continues!

I was an active teenager and fit all the way into my college days. While no one would have ever said I was skinny, having a thicker bone structure and build, I was certainly never fat or even overweight.

Enter the college experience. Most guys will know the college routine. Pizza, video games, football games, beer, wash, rinse repeat. Do that for a few months, let alone years and well… you start wearing all that sugar and grain from both solid and liquid forms.

My story is not as huge of a success story as other people I have read about, but then again, I did not start out completely unhealthy.

I was always really active growing up and I was a dancer as well. I never ever struggled with my weight and ate whatever I wanted. I never could understand how people could get overweight—after all it was easy for me! I stayed slim and lean through dance and just a generally active lifestyle.

I danced for most of my early years, and stopped when I reached college. I had terrible eating habits by then. I ate anything I wanted at the time, because that was what I always did when I danced. However, when I was eating the same way at college, I started to gain weight. Then I started to get cravings that would not go away until I had said item. Cheeseburgers, french fries, and everything else bad for me, were my staples.

Community: The Missing Piece of My Primal Story

I wanted to share with you and your readers my love of the activity known as AcroYoga, or sometimes Acrobatic Partner Yoga. I think of it as the missing piece that really brought my primal lifestyle full circle and improved my life!

A little bit of background about me: I’m 26 years old and I’ve been following PB for about four years. I first found MDA when my best friend, now partner, Alex shared a recipe from the site. I started reading and couldn’t stop. Before going primal, I’d always been pretty healthy and in shape, but I was plagued by body image issues, and was constantly counting calories and punishing myself for eating too much. Primal life changed that for me. I learned the difference between calories and nutrition, and started to feel good about the food I ate. I went strictly Primal for a while before I found the healthy balance that worked best for my metabolism. I really feel like I’m living my best life now!

Overcoming Crohn’s: How I Dropped Sugar and Gained 30 Pounds

Going straight to the point: Discovering I had Crohn’s disease after a few weeks in the hospital was the best thing that ever happened to me. I definitely would NOT have made that statement in the heat of the moment back three years ago, but I hit my 31st birthday and I’ve never had more vitality (for myself) and understanding of the human body (for sharing).

For years prior to my hospitalization I woke up every morning feeling poisoned. I had frequent mouth ulcers, the lymph nodes in my armpits where constantly swelling up and painful, I was always, always tired, I had bad acne on my back that didn’t seem to correlate to anything, foul flatulence, dandruff, joint pain, a smattering of skin allergies and I sunburned really, really easily (I’m a Northern Canadian who’s been living in Southern Spain for the last eight years, it is SUNNY here).

No More Debilitating Back Pain

“I can’t move.” I said to my fiancé.

“What? What do you mean?”

“I can’t move! My back hurts so much.”

In May 2013 I was on vacation in the Netherlands with my girlfriend. She was pregnant in the 9th month and on that vacation I proposed to her on the beach (and lucky me, she said yes).

One morning I woke up and couldn’t move. The pain was so bad that I had to roll out of the bed because I couldn’t get upright. Damn, I was 28 years old. What happened?
