It’s hard to say where my Primal story really begins. Maybe it began in college, when I got used to living off of simple processed carbs (pasta, rice, bread) in order to keep my food expenses as low as possible. At one point I was spending less than $20 a week on food! And that included “eating out.” I would drive through a Zaxby’s or McDonalds and order just French fries. Cheap and delicious, right?

I managed to stay skinny with no effort and a lot of carbs. I was a size six when I started college, but when I—a.) became a coxswain for the crew team (you have to be as small as possible, as you’re the only one in the boat not pulling her weight) and b.) fell in love with my now husband, I quickly dropped to a size zero.

My physical health has been pretty good most of my life—I had surgery to attempt to correct strabismus (my eye muscles don’t work well together) twice when I was an infant. I’ve had very few injuries and illnesses, thankfully. My MDA miracle is much more oriented on the mental and spiritual health level.

I was always very squirmy and full of energy, and my restlessness surely got me into some trouble growing up. Even as an adult sitting still was incredibly uncomfortable until 2011, when I began the Primal lifestyle. I was tested and given therapy and medicated as a child to try and address my behavior and imbalance, and came to believe I would be medicated for the rest of my life. In truth, I was grateful for the changes the medication brought about once we found an effective combination and dosage, though the experimenting was difficult.

Malc from England here, sharing my Primal Blueprint success story.

It’s not a headline grabbing tale of huge weight-loss, cured illnesses or drastic transformation. It’s about longevity and in particular enjoyment of strength training balanced with starting a family and growing older.

It begins almost 15 years ago when I went off to university. I was 20 and ready to enjoy myself away from home. I threw myself into the lifestyle of 4am bedtimes, mid-day wake-ups, booze most days (if not every day) and plenty of it, accompanied by the obligatory fast food. I’d never been the thinnest of kids, but I’d always played football (soccer) and been reasonably active, so I hadn’t previously struggled with my weight. Of course the new lifestyle took a toll. I reached the heaviest I have ever been (175 pounds at 5’7″).

In June of 2011, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at Bilkent University in Turkey, with a GPA of 3.28/4.00 (you will see why I shared my GPA later on.) At that time my weight was 358 lbs. Then I followed up with my Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. (I am currently doing my PhD in the same program with a MS degree already in hand.) When I realized that I was coming over to a completely different country (even continent), I made up my mind on becoming healthier, taking control over my life and losing the extra weight I had been carrying on for years.

I’ve been debating sharing my story for over three years now! I’ve never felt like I was at a “good enough” point to submit it. I kept telling myself to wait just a little longer to share my story. I know I am far from “perfect”—but I also know that I have a lot of be proud of.

My journey started in 2010/2011. I was at an average weight, but I wasn’t my healthiest. I had serious digestive issues. I blamed my problems on lactose, as many people do. I recall having to run out of several college classes just to use the bathroom. I thought it had to be the big glass of milk I had at breakfast—I never could have imagined that whole wheat bagels and toast were the issue!

Throughout my high school experience I fluctuated in weight, but towards adulthood I began to gain weight slowly.  At 19, I began to go to the gym regularly and had actually started taking over-the-counter fat burners from a well known health food store in my area. At the time, the fat burners contained ephedrine which was later discovered to be rather dangerous, but at the time they had helped me lose quite a bit of weight. However, I had started to have frequently occurring panic attacks where I felt like my heart was racing and that something was seriously wrong with me, so I stopped taking them and the panic attacks stopped.
