I would like to thank Mark Sisson and the Primal lifestyle for saving my life. But before I regale my death-defying experience, I will give a brief overview of my health history – I’m sure many thinking of starting their Primal journey can relate.
Growing up, I was a skinny kid despite my love for junk food. My parents were busy people, and since I couldn’t stomach the bitter vegetables or watery textures of their home cooking, I often ended up eating packaged foods.
As I entered high school, junk food was available at every turn. Combined with the typical teenage appetite, this led to some prodigious hedonistic feats, such as eight donuts in one morning or a whole large pepperoni pizza for dinner. My friends called me the ‘black hole’ because food would disappear without noticeable impact. But as a physician’s check-up confirmed, it did catch up to me – at age 16 I was almost 170 lbs (borderline overweight for my 5’9” frame). I started jogging and trying to eat less according to the doctor’s orders, but this never resulted in any significant weight loss – the hunger was too strong to fight.

The first time I heard about Mark’s Daily Apple was the summer before I started my freshman year of college. My grandma loves health and had been watching the Diabetes Summit. She told two of my sisters, Kristen and Hannah, about Mark. They had fallen in love with all things Primal and when they told me about their new discovery, I completely dismissed it. I didn’t want to hear about it or even believe it because I was living in the complete opposite way. I wouldn’t touch a vegetable if you paid me and bread was my main food source. Then, I went to college and had a wake-up call.

This isn’t a weight loss story, although I am extremely proud of all those Apples who’ve experienced tremendous weight loss success–kudos! Mine is, however, a story about how Primal living allowed me to exterminate my auto-immune issues and overcome my lifelong battle with eczema.
I grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the post-Apartheid Nelson Mandela era. My folks and I moved there from London in 1994 when I was two, so I count myself lucky to have been exposed to people from a multitude of cultures, nationalities, and faiths. It’s quite hard to imagine that only 10 years prior to that blacks and whites lived in forced separation from each other under an iron-fisted government!

I remember my senior year of high school before deciding to go Primal. I went to a small high school just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was a two time state qualifier in track in field for the 4×200 meter relay. I ran sprints in track in the spring, and ran cross country in fall to stay in shape and work on running form. As you can guess with all this constant working out (especially in cross where I was running an average of 3-5 miles per practice, averaging close to 30 miles per week), I was a carb hound! On average, I was probably consuming about 500 grams of carbs and consuming close to 4000 calories daily, consisting of 95% junk foods like pastas, cookies, ice cream, sandwiches, and all the other artificial foods you can think of.

I’ll start this story at around where I started remembering things in my life as clear as day. I was four years old playing in my first basketball game at the local gym in suburban Dallas, Texas. My mom was a soccer player in high school and my dad was a cyclist, so they always encouraged and pushed me to challenge myself in physical endeavors. I enjoyed the sport and would go on to play soccer in elementary school and track and field in high school.

Like many others who’ve jumped on the Paleo/Primal eating concept, I didn’t quite start following the regimen for weight loss. My issues stemmed from the life halting condition (which I believe to be an autoimmune condition) rosacea. For those who aren’t familiar with the condition, rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease known to have an effect on facial flushing and redness. In my case, it got to be pretty bad. Now to most people, including family and friends, this wasn’t such a big deal. So I had a bit of redness going on in my face… so what? Everyone flushes from time to time. But for me, it was an incredibly life halting experience that, for the time I had it, completely derailed my entire life.
