Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

Six years ago, I was a freshman at Kalamazoo College, majoring in biology and tentatively planning to go to vet school. I was known for my ability to pack away refined junk food and not gain a single pound. I was a two-sport collegiate athlete, starting goalkeeper for the soccer team, acing my classes, and working in a research lab. By all measures, my life was wonderful. That is, except for my eczema.

I started to notice all the weight I was gaining towards the end of my sophomore year and beginning of my junior year of college. I mainly just wanted to lose the weight I had gained because I was embarrassed. But I also didn’t realize how high my blood pressure was getting for someone my age. Little did I know that this would start me down an amazing path.

I started dieting like everyone else seems to be teaching and preaching. I counted calories, ate and drank tons of “diet” approved stuff. Like diet sodas, fat free sweets and the like. I did see weight come off but I felt horrible. I was in the gym everyday, I had no energy and was grumpy. This lead to the typical yo-yo dieting. I thought to myself I’m way too young to be feeling this miserable. I knew there had to be a better way.

This Is Not a Story of Weight Loss, but of Health

This is not a story of weight loss (I’ve always been thin), but of health. I grew up on a diet of ramen noodles, pasta, potato chips, pizza rolls, and Dr. Pepper. So it’s no surprise that I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease by the time I was 19.

When I was a teenager, nutrition consisted of reading prevention magazine for tips on “heart healthy whole grains”. My first real step towards health was when I was about 14 and decided to give up soda for my New Year resolution. It was HARD. My family thought I was strange when I got water instead at a fast food restaurant, especially since the soda was “already paid for” with my meal. But I did it. Of course, that wasn’t the end all cure for my health problems. I had a lot further to go.

My sister was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus when she was 9, and like many young Americans she was ill informed about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My sister was reluctant to accept the fact that her body was in a diseased state. The doctors did not stress to her the importance of how she needed to continuously regulate her diet in order to lead a normal routine and achieve a full life expectancy. When I was a senior in high school I read Robb Wolf’s book “The Paleo Solution,” and I was able to empower her with the knowledge to live unimpeded by her condition. After I realized the impact I had on my sister, I was inspired to help others improve their lifestyles by also eating properly, so I decided to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Dietetics at Florida State University.

I’ll start off with the disclaimer that my story is only in its early chapters, but it has already been life changing nonetheless.

In November of 2015, at the age of 23, after many years of excruciating pelvic pain, fatigue, chronic inflammation, and GI issues, I underwent an exploratory surgery and was diagnosed with a chronic illness called Endometriosis. Once a face was finally put to the culprit behind the past 8 years of my suffering, I decided that I would no longer let it control my life.

From the Struggles of SAD to the Ease of Primal

I was always chubby, never fat, but really enjoyed desserts as a kid. My parents moved to the US in the 90’s when I was a child, and our diets quickly assimilated to the local SAD diet, which included easily available pizza, deli sandwiches, anything fried, and way too much dessert.

My parents weren’t very aware of the dangers of sugar. For instance, I would drink chocolate milk in the morning while my parents had coffee, or was given cookies (dunkaroos anyone?) and ice cream every day for snacks. I still remember the blue, red, or green “juice” they would give us in school. This all led to me being a chubby kid my entire childhood. Luckily, I enjoyed karate and sports of all kinds, which helped me offset some of the unhealthy lifestyle.
