The Primal Prescription: Surviving the “Sick Care” Sinkhole (A New Primal Book Plus Limited-Time Bonus Offer)

Primal_Prescription_3D (1) 549When I wrote The Primal Blueprint, my vision was, perhaps, a lofty one. I wanted to see a healthier world. I wanted to illuminate the path towards greater medical independence. I wanted to help readers eat, move, lift, play, and sleep their way to the best “health insurance” of all: living in accordance with our primal genes.

And as scientific research continues affirming the benefits of an ancestral-inspired diet (while reader success stories pour in daily, echoing the same), it seems that vision is coming to fruition. Primal living is proving itself more valuable than anything that can be bottled, pilled, or scribbled on a doctor’s prescription pad. Across the globe, primal adherents are reclaiming not only their health, but their independence from pharmaceutical and medical shackles—and the number of those “system expats” is growing.

It’s tempting to kick up our heels and declare the battle preemptively won, but let’s face it: sometimes life throws curve balls, including ones that land you in the ER. Freak accidents abound. Arms and legs break. Diseases emerge from genetic mutations or prior decades of questionable habits. Stupid Mistakes happen, even if they aren’t our own (ahem—they’re never our own, right?). And so, try as we might to dodge the sticky clutches of the medical system, we’re sometimes reeled back in by necessity.

That’s why I’m excited to announce the latest, much-needed, missing-piece addition to our Primal Book family: The Primal Prescription, by Dr. Doug McGuff, MD, and Robert P. Murphy, PhD. An ER physician and economist, respectively, perhaps no duo of authors is better suited to tackle the mission of this book: equipping readers with the background, the comprehension, and the tools needed to navigate our increasingly precarious medical system. (In fact, I humbly take credit for uniting these two men as co-authors: Doug’s experience “on the front lines” in the medical field seemed like the ideal complement to Bob’s extensive work in economics. If I do say so myself, it was the perfect meeting of minds.)

Read an excerpt of The Primal Prescription

Whether you’re an economics buff, a history geek, a nutrition nerd, or simply trying to keep yourself (and your loved ones) healthy and safe, this book has something invaluable for you. The Primal Prescription is an excursion into the fascinating, oft-twisted history of American health care; an examination of the doomed economic model upon which our medical system stands; and a game plan for handling insurance, doctors, medical screening, medications, hospital visits, and virtually every other aspect of health care you’re likely to encounter in life.

In other words, The Primal Prescription fills in the medical gaps left by The Primal Blueprint, and in so doing, completes the vision I set into motion years ago. This book is a guide for deepening your autonomy and saving your health—maybe even your life.

Not convinced yet? Here’s what you can expect to learn from Doug and Bob’s masterpiece:

  • How the American health care system evolved to its current incompetent state
  • Why Medicare is ultimately a Ponzi scheme—and why its collapse is imminent
  • Why the FDA is even more dangerous than you think
  • How “health insurance” is an entirely different beast than “health care”—and why conflating the two is perilous
  • Why Obamacare is, at its core, a matter of “health redistribution”
  • How to change your diet and lifestyle to dramatically reduce your risk of the Western world’s biggest killers
  • How to choose a doctor who will fight for your health and well-being
  • How to safely wean yourself off unnecessary medications
  • How to advocate for and ensure you receive the highest standard of care when you are in the hospital
  • How to determine which medical screenings and elective procedures you do (and don’t) need
  • And much, much more.

The beauty of The Primal Prescription is that you don’t have to enter its pages already “primally convinced” to benefit. Sure, following the 10 Primal Laws is instrumental for disease prevention—and the book elegantly reinforces that message—but this is a book you can give to your low-fat-yogurt-eating mother, your vegan coworker, your grainophile friend, or anyone else who has to interact with the medical system and is discontented with the situation.

With The Primal Prescription, Doug and Bob have given readers a truly priceless gift: a combination of life-saving education and actionable steps. Devour it—twice, or thrice; there’s plenty to absorb—and then place it on the shelf next to The Primal Blueprint. Between the two, the future of your health will thank you.

  1. DEFINITELY picking this one up. I want to go to that webinar, too. 😛

  2. I love Dr. Murphy’s work in economics (and podcasts, childrens’ stories, and karaoke)! How did I not know about this book? My worlds are crashing together!!!

Definitely picking this one up! Thanks for putting out consistently awesome content Mark!

  3. A much needed resource!

So many people come to our clinic after first putting full trust in the conventional medical-pharmaceutical system–only to have it completely fail them.

Many also show up with a bag full of pharmaceutical meds prescribed by a handful of different physicians working entirely separately from one another…treating different parts of the same person without ever seeing the entire person as a whole, and without even considering the impact of long-term overdosing with multiple, heavy-duty prescriptions.

Usually, my patients get 10 minutes with their other doctors and feel pressured–as if they are taking up their doctor’s precious time by asking questions. Diet and lifestyle? Rarely brought up.

With us, an initial intake is 60-90 minutes, all current prescriptions are considered, and eating and lifestyle guidance are paramount.

It truly floors me what some professionals consider “practicing medicine,” and I’m so grateful for any resource helping patients navigate the system and advocate for themselves and loved ones. Thank you!

    1. Your clinic sounds exactly like ours! I am the clinical nutritionist there and the docs are wonderful!

  4. Love seeing Bob Murphy, an Austrian Economist and avowed Anarcho-capitalist, featured on here. One of my favorites along with his good friend, Tom Woods.

    1. Yes, very happy to see this combination. Love McGuff’s body by science and RPM’s appearances on the Tom Woods podcast

    2. I’ve been following the “Austrians” for more than a decade now, and I actually learned about MDA when Tom Woods interviewed Mark as a guest-host on the Peter Schiff Show. I immediately bought The Primal Blueprint and two other Primal books, lost 35lbs, and feel awesome! It’s great to see Bob Murphy on the scene as well – he always has something novel and extremely useful to add, seemingly to any conversation.

      1. His best contribution may in fact be, “Booook.”

    1. Hi Esther,

No books are available on Thrive at this time.

  5. And this as I’m trying to figure it out my medical insurance, which we have to do EVERY 2 years! Argh. Benefits go away and costs go up AND I don’t even use it unless I fall and hurt myself…. Thanks for this!!!

  6. Are the contents of this book in general appliceable to European healthcare systems as well, or is this really focussed on the US one?

  7. Mark, the wikipedia page on Robert P. Murphy claims he’s an evolution denier. Maybe even a creationist given his comments on his strong Christian faith. How’d you convince someone like that to co-write a book that is so dependent on a lifestyle adapted from evolutionary principles? After all, this is a “Primal” series book. This is not a critism; just curiosity talking. Cheers.

    1. Same here, Libertarianism, I get – personal responsibility, and all that. But, I have to admit that seeing Murphy as a co-author raised a red flag, since I associate him with Intelligent Design and other specious “scientific” stands, and Mark’s writing seems so well-grounded in hard research.

So, I’m going to trust Mark’s instincts on this, and keep a curious mind reading this book. Murphy’s an economist, after all, and hopefully that’s his only contribution to the content.

      1. Robert P. Murphy talks about the book and his co-author role on Tom Woods Show Episode 516 (see embedded hyperlink). Sounds to me that his input is all economics based. I look forward to reading the book.

      2. We are the publisher. Robert P. Murphy can speak for himself with regards to his views on topics unrelated to his contribution to this title—and whatever those views may be, they are not representative of the publisher. This book is to get people thinking more about the health care issues we’re up against in the U.S.

    2. I’m a devout Christian and lean very strong on the “creationist” side of things. I also fully believe that science has not even begun to scratch the surface of understanding our world, our universe, etc. when it comes to such matters of things that happened long before *I* arrived on the scene. I’m kind of “Lean not on your own understanding” kind of person in that regard.

But, I can not deny the adaptive and evolutionary nature of the world we live in — the idea of “survival of the fittest” so to speak. Another big thing about MDA is the idea of maximizing gene expression. I look at it from this standpoint: your genes are what they are, so now how do you get the most out of them? Approaching it in that fashion, it doesn’t really matter HOW your (both collectively and individually) genes got to what they are.

There IS room for both a Christian viewpoint alongside one that embraces the tenets of MDA. That is, unless until all the anti-Christians drive folks like me off, I suppose. Unfortunately, it’s all to common.

    1. Nook purchases qualify. Thanks, Susan!

“Both orders placed online (from any source) and in brick and mortar retail locations will be honored.”

  8. The assumption is faulty. The medical system is not broken. it does precisely what it is supposed to do. Keeping the majority of Americans in a state of health degradation, a virtual war with triage as its major health philosophy. The system allows the more educated and independent to wisely opt out. In fact Obamacare is a gift. It (and I believe quite intentionally) has opened the eyes of many Americans to the need to be their own doctor, healer and advocate. An obvious prompt to leave a system that bankrupts and kills. The system is perfectly sensible if your one of the arrogant ennobled class who believe in mass population reduction in the coming years. I don’t for sure, and believe we are all worthy because we are primarily Spirit. Many of you are Godless clowns. Thank you to people like Dr. Dana Leigh Lyons who are independent and sincere. May many more who are service minded be forthcoming in sharing their expertise and knowledge.

  9. Does this book have stuff in it of use for those of us in Europe, because it is obviously geared towards the American system?

    1. Sorry – just found a reply to similar comment somewhere further up.

  10. I read the whole sample text. In my 27 years as a medical device industry executive, I’m pleased to see the brief history is comprehensive and unbiased and mirrors my personal experience. Every Federal Healthcare solution has compounded the problem. This book looks like the necessary survival guide in preparation for the total collapse of the system that continues to get worse. ICD-10 is forcing the most capable and experienced surgeon to retire. Can’t wait to read the whole thing

  11. Am I the only person who read “Doug and Bob” and immediately thought, “Beauty, eh?”

    Take off, you hosers!

  12. Anyone not participating in the Affordable Health Care Act? Due to layoff and loss of company benefits, and now contract work which will cause us to purchase health care on our own, the Affordable Health Care Act is causing a $600 a month increase in our family health premium. We didn’t create our lives around a $600 monthly health care increase for health care that we don’t even use. We have purchased emergency insurance and are planning to take the fine for being non-compliant (the fine is way cheaper)…but looking for some reinforcement on this, as it is the first time we will be without the option for regular group healthcare, and that darn pre-existing condition issue will become part of our lives if we become injured. Thanks!

  13. Thanks for any other informative web site. The place else could I am getting that
type of info written in such a perfect way? I have a venture that I am just now working on, and I’ve been at
the look out for such info.

  14. I received the book Thursday, finished it by Sunday. It is EXCELLENT. A truly objective work that supports it’s allegations with buttloads of information straight from the CBO. Previously, I had been vaguely in support of ACA, but now that I have a fuller picture of how it works, how it is truly being funded, and what the government’s own projections are for both the budget and the population, and also how the emedical industry is being forced to operate, I am appalled. Seriously, everyone who pays taxes, might need medical care, and plans to grow old needs to read this book.

    1. And I might add, it is well-written and an interesting read. Interesting as in two trains on the same track heading towards each other at top speed.

  15. I missed the deadline to mail it in! I started to do it on the day I bought it but got sidelined by work! Would you please accept this now? It is October 30th.
