another good idea is to buy a good cook book (I can't live without The Joy of Cooking) for countless good ideas for what to do with leftovers as well as how to make meals out of peculiar "impulse buy" ingredients.

Another good idea is to shop more often. A lot of people are still hung up on doing ONE BIG SHOP per week and that leads to a ton of waste not only of food but money.

From what I've observed, shoppers purchase fresh produce with good intentions, and then never prepare salads, etc. because it is too much work. Then it becomes garbage. Americans throw away more produce than they eat. As Jerry Seinfield says: "Why do they always call it the crisper? Food doesn't get crisper and fresher there, what they should call it the rotter!" My advice is: go the extra mile and make fresh veggies for meals.

Creating a meal map is easy. That will prevent impulse eating too, the only problem is following the map! There always seem many unexpected occasions and events during the week that make us straying away from the meal.

Another tip: use the leftovers in the next day's meal. Some rice is perfect in an omelette, vegetables go into the soup and meat makes for a great stir-fry.
