Primal eating happened by accident for my husband Pat and I. Although Pat and I took very different routes, and studied different research for different reasons, we’ve both found success with primal eating.

Our History

Once a vegetarian, Pat was a carb and sugar lover. He was a typical Scottish man that enjoyed his meal of carbs with carbs and a side of carbs. Macaroni and cheese with chips? Lasagna with chips? Definitely! When he was a teenager, Pat was an extremely active mountain bike cross-country racer. Like some of the Tour de France cyclists you see, he was skinny everywhere except his quads and glutes. The knowledge that carbs were vital for his racing and success were imparted to him early. As a teenager, he could easily eat an entire loaf of white bread in a sitting. As an adult, he could devour an entire Marks and Spencer Chocolate Swiss Roll in one go, eating it as though it were a candy bar. But Pat had many issues that plagued him: as a child, he was epileptic; he’s had bouts of depression; he deals with Seasonal Affective Disorder; he enjoyed his alcohol. He also had many food intolerances, which often left him with upset stomachs, and the results of these stomach aches, if you know what I mean.

I have, in the name of health gain and weight loss, experimented with vegetarianism, veganism, low fat dieting, a sugar-wheat-and-dairy-free diet (still low-fat or I’d have probably stuck with that one!), calorie counting and juice fasting over the past thirty years. Many of you reading will recognise the pattern of interspersing these oft-repeated and generally short lived regimes with periods of overeating either junk or a “healthy balanced diet.” It’s a frustrating, demoralising and damaging way to live.

During this time I have seen my weight yo-yo anywhere between 140 and 224 pounds. And along the way I’ve suffered crippling depression, anxiety, acne, frequent bouts of tonsillitis, chronic constipation, binge-eating, inexplicable periods of exhaustion, insomnia and brain fog.

This is a story about a little girl who is loved very much.

This is also a story about poop.

Years ago, there was a man and a woman who wanted a baby very much. The man had no trouble making babies (he was tested by medical experts). The woman, on the other hand, had endometriosis. She was having trouble getting pregnant.

The man and the woman decided that their end goal was having a baby and that they really didn’t need their biological offspring in order to give love. They decided to forgo expensive fertility treatments and focus on adoption.

This is not a weight loss story, though I’ve been immensely impressed with the numerous weight loss success stories here on MDA! If anything, this is a weight gain story. It is a war story about a fight against inflammation and auto-immune disease. It’s a story about how a chronically tired, shy, uncompetitive, wimpy (though smart and artistic) teen began to grow into a chronically tired, shy, uncompetitive adult…and eventually into deteriorating health.

Hi my name is Tori! Contrary to most stories on Mark’s Daily Apple, this isn’t a story about how I went Primal and lost 150 lbs. This is a story about how going even partially Primal opened my eyes as to what was really happening in my body.

I’ve been overweight pretty much for as long as I can remember. It started with snacking too much toward the end of elementary school and has carried through until today. And, like many overweight girls, I had self esteem issues about my weight… which I turned to food to comfort. For years, I tried most diets you can imagine, typically having great results for about three or so weeks and then hitting a plateau. It took me a long time to grow comfortable with my curves, and to accept the fact that I’m ‘built like an ox’ and will never be as thin as the models and actresses on TV. Accepting my body and the stress of an electrical engineering degree caused me to grow lax with my diet in college… a little too lax.

I first learned of The Primal Blueprint in the summer of 2010 when I spent the summer at my now husband’s parent’s in Maine, USA. I had been stuck at 135 pounds following a six month trip around South East Asia and Australia in 2007, and hadn’t been able to get back to my 120 pound pre-traveler weight, regardless of how many calories I limited myself to or hours spent on the treadmill. I met Tyler in 2008 in post-grad in the UK, when he was a vegetarian, daily gym-goer and runner. We ate relatively healthily in CW terms, I ate less meat, and worked out way more than I had before, but I struggled to lose any weight, despite the fitness regime. I wasn’t traditionally “fat,” but my muscular frame was more chunky than lean.
