Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. When I was 13, I started having a lot of sick days. Initially, I was having migraines from time to time. Then one day they seemed to be happening on a very regular basis. I started seeing different doctors, and they couldn’t figure out why I was having them. By this time I started vomiting, sometimes multiple times a day, but it was every single day. I also started having trouble sleeping. When 8th grade rolled around, I was seeing doctors all over the place, having weekly tests done for a million different things, but still nothing showed. I was on a lot of different medications that no child should ever have to take, and the only thing that happened was extreme weight gain, basically. My every day life was hell. On top of being so sick, and having no answers, I was tormented daily at school which didn’t help. Before I knew it I was also on anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medication, and had begun therapy.

Several years ago I went from my 15 year career working in hospitality management and found a government job in a call centre. It was at this time I fell in love with my future wife who also worked in the call centre. I weighed in at about 96 kg at this stage and thought I was relatively fit. Though the only sport I was involved in was basketball with my mates, maybe once a fortnight.

I had never been more sedentary than when I was working in the call centre, and after having proposed to my wife six months after we met, I guess I kind of stopped putting in any effort with my appearance. My skin was blotchy and the kilograms started to pile on. I married my wife two years after we met, weighing in at 108 kg.

Hi, my name is Brooke. I am a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom. I don’t feel like your typical MDA success story. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading how others are changing their life for the better, but I don’t often hear from women that are like me. I’m not sure why that is, but it has motivated me to share my story.

Okay, so let’s start at the beginning. A couple of years ago, I was doing a lot of thinking about my diet. My main concern was my weight. I was definitely overweight but never by a lot. My heaviest was around 155 pounds, and I’m 5’5.” I was just unhappy with how I looked and it felt like no matter what I tried, I just couldn’t lose any more weight. I was following conventional advice for a “healthy” eating plan: low-fat, whole grains. Gosh, I remember I used to bake my own bread all the time. I loved it! But I was always so hungry. I would always need a morning and an afternoon snack, and still I was hungry. I thought I must be doing something wrong, because diet experts on TV would say, “If you are hungry, eat a yogurt, eat some hummus and pita bread, or eat an apple, and you will feel satisfied.” I would feel even hungrier after a snack like that!

Though my primal journey isn’t one of losing hundreds of pounds or overcoming disabling digestion issues, it is one where my life has unquestionably improved from the sweets-loving, chronic cardio lifestyle in which I was buried a few years ago.

As a three-sport athlete in high school, I was desperate for activity after not playing any sports in college. My sister, who is an avid runner, convinced me to take up the sport, and I loved it. I ran a marathon my senior year of college, and worked and worked to improve my half marathon time. Addicted to running, I ignored the small injuries that kept cropping up. My I.T. bands were tight to the point of disabling pain, my lower back was tired, and my knees ached consistently.

So Long Chronic Cardio, the Primal Lifestyle Is My New “Go To”!

WAY back in the 70’s, I jumped on the running bandwagon. Energized, invigorated, and inspired, running became part of my life, my “go to.”

Feeling “blue”? Go for a run!
Feeling “fat”? Go for a run!
Feeling “bored”? Go for a run!

I was going to run forever – I had the golden ticket to aging gracefully!

In ’97 I ran my first (and what turned out to be my only) marathon. I had visions of doing one marathon a year, glancing sideways at the possibility of an ultra. My body had other ideas, however.

In the Best Shape of My Life at 40 Years Old

First off, thank you for starting Mark’s Daily Apple, my starting point after wanting to give up on my quest for a healthy life. It was April, 2014, when I spent hours reading posts and success stories on your site. The Friday success stories gave me the solid belief I needed. Thanks so much to all that share their journeys. It’s been over a year now since I switched to the primal lifestyle, 50+ lbs. lighter and in the best shape of my life at 40. Grok On!

Here’s my story.

Even from a young age I can remember having to deal with being overweight. It started around 4th grade when I became a fatty and it lasted until the end of 11th grade. I joined the Oklahoma National Guard my junior year of high school. That summer I went to Army basic training and my fat ran off crying. I thought to myself at that moment in time, finally I’m not a fatty anymore. Regretfully it didn’t last that long and the fat came back laughing in my college years.
