Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. From the Struggles of SAD to the Ease of Primal

I was always chubby, never fat, but really enjoyed desserts as a kid. My parents moved to the US in the 90’s when I was a child, and our diets quickly assimilated to the local SAD diet, which included easily available pizza, deli sandwiches, anything fried, and way too much dessert.

My parents weren’t very aware of the dangers of sugar. For instance, I would drink chocolate milk in the morning while my parents had coffee, or was given cookies (dunkaroos anyone?) and ice cream every day for snacks. I still remember the blue, red, or green “juice” they would give us in school. This all led to me being a chubby kid my entire childhood. Luckily, I enjoyed karate and sports of all kinds, which helped me offset some of the unhealthy lifestyle.

I’ve been debating sharing my story for over three years now! I’ve never felt like I was at a “good enough” point to submit it. I kept telling myself to wait just a little longer to share my story. I know I am far from “perfect”—but I also know that I have a lot of be proud of.

My journey started in 2010/2011. I was at an average weight, but I wasn’t my healthiest. I had serious digestive issues. I blamed my problems on lactose, as many people do. I recall having to run out of several college classes just to use the bathroom. I thought it had to be the big glass of milk I had at breakfast—I never could have imagined that whole wheat bagels and toast were the issue!

I would like to thank Mark Sisson and the Primal lifestyle for saving my life. But before I regale my death-defying experience, I will give a brief overview of my health history – I’m sure many thinking of starting their Primal journey can relate.

Growing up, I was a skinny kid despite my love for junk food. My parents were busy people, and since I couldn’t stomach the bitter vegetables or watery textures of their home cooking, I often ended up eating packaged foods.

As I entered high school, junk food was available at every turn. Combined with the typical teenage appetite, this led to some prodigious hedonistic feats, such as eight donuts in one morning or a whole large pepperoni pizza for dinner. My friends called me the ‘black hole’ because food would disappear without noticeable impact. But as a physician’s check-up confirmed, it did catch up to me – at age 16 I was almost 170 lbs (borderline overweight for my 5’9” frame). I started jogging and trying to eat less according to the doctor’s orders, but this never resulted in any significant weight loss – the hunger was too strong to fight.

Throughout my high school experience I fluctuated in weight, but towards adulthood I began to gain weight slowly.  At 19, I began to go to the gym regularly and had actually started taking over-the-counter fat burners from a well known health food store in my area. At the time, the fat burners contained ephedrine which was later discovered to be rather dangerous, but at the time they had helped me lose quite a bit of weight. However, I had started to have frequently occurring panic attacks where I felt like my heart was racing and that something was seriously wrong with me, so I stopped taking them and the panic attacks stopped.

The first time I heard about Mark’s Daily Apple was the summer before I started my freshman year of college. My grandma loves health and had been watching the Diabetes Summit. She told two of my sisters, Kristen and Hannah, about Mark. They had fallen in love with all things Primal and when they told me about their new discovery, I completely dismissed it. I didn’t want to hear about it or even believe it because I was living in the complete opposite way. I wouldn’t touch a vegetable if you paid me and bread was my main food source. This is a story of a fat man living to die…who is now dying to live.

I did not just wake up one day morbidly obese, on 17 prescription meds, a heart patient with three cardiac stents (having been “cathed” seven times with five angioplasties), and with type II diabetes, chronic migraines, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension, sleep apnea, recurring bouts of kidney stones requiring hospitalization (due to medications), clinical depression, psoriatic arthritis/fibromyalgia (the doctors were split on that one), and PTSD…just for laughs.
