Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

A few weeks ago someone wrote in the comment section that they would like to see more “failure” stories on the site. Well, I’d like to submit my failure/success story. So, here I go…

My name’s Anita and for 5 years now, I have been moving toward a more Primal life. I started by reading Gary Taubes’ Good Calories, Bad Calories and felt so motivated to change. My mom had just died a month before, and she was morbidly obese most of my life. If it weren’t for the fact that she’d lost so much weight being ill, I wouldn’t have been able to nurse her those last few months. That scared me.

I remember being as young as six and my mother taking me to the doctor’s, complaining how underweight and pale I was. I’d end up going to the lab for tests and then back to the doctor, to have him tell my mother my iron was low. This went on my entire childhood. I clearly remember to this day, the awful tasting liquid iron supplement I had to take daily, the raw egg shakes I was forced to consume because the doctor said so, the time I wanted a beautiful blue jacket but my mom insisted I buy the green one instead, because I didn’t look as pale in it. I had terrible eczema and environmental allergies and my nose would bleed spontaneously. I was a wreck as a child, awkward, gangly and sickly.

I really don’t have too many before pictures, as you can imagine I avoided the camera, not liking the way I looked. I have ever so many after pictures, as now I’ll pose at the first sign of a camera because I like the way I look so much!

My “before” picture (below) was taken in early 2011 at age 59, with my first granddaughter. For most of my life, I had always been slender and fit, being 5’5 1/2″ and weighing around 125. I’d always had normal cholesterol counts and normal blood pressure. Apart from occasional colds, I was in excellent health and didn’t think much about what I ate.

50 Pounds Down and Never Turning Back

I feel like now is the time for me to finally share my success story, though I will be the first to tell you the journey certainly continues!

I was an active teenager and fit all the way into my college days. While no one would have ever said I was skinny, having a thicker bone structure and build, I was certainly never fat or even overweight.

Enter the college experience. Most guys will know the college routine. Pizza, video games, football games, beer, wash, rinse repeat. Do that for a few months, let alone years and well… you start wearing all that sugar and grain from both solid and liquid forms.

My primal journey started one year ago and it has been an amazing transformation. I decide to write my story because others need to see what a primal lifestyle can do for them. I realized that the success stories on Mark’s Daily Apple have helped encourage and motivate me throughout my journey, so here is my opportunity to give back.

Just like so many others, my diet consisted of carbs (and more carbs), as early as I can remember. Growing up in a Caribbean household, we had lots of rice, flour, and bread in the house at all times. I was a big kid from the beginning, with a passion for playing sports. The neighborhood kids had a weekly tradition of football and basketball games that we enjoyed for hours at a time. Despite the high activity level, I had grown to 240 pounds by the time I was 14 and began to feel the real pressure of being an overweight kid. I lacked a lot of self-confidence and tried to stay away from the spotlight as much as I could.

My story is not as huge of a success story as other people I have read about, but then again, I did not start out completely unhealthy.

I was always really active growing up and I was a dancer as well. I never ever struggled with my weight and ate whatever I wanted. I never could understand how people could get overweight—after all it was easy for me! I stayed slim and lean through dance and just a generally active lifestyle.

I danced for most of my early years, and stopped when I reached college. I had terrible eating habits by then. I ate anything I wanted at the time, because that was what I always did when I danced. However, when I was eating the same way at college, I started to gain weight. Then I started to get cravings that would not go away until I had said item. Cheeseburgers, french fries, and everything else bad for me, were my staples.
