Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

In addition to asking about whether Primal is useful for seniors, MDA members often ask about how to get stubborn senior fathers, grandfathers, husbands, etc. to go Primal. Since I am old (71) and was fairly stubborn when I started Primal, my story may be of interest. (I am sharing what I know from personal experience, but what I have to say may still be relevant if you’re younger and/or female.)

Four years ago, I had been faithfully following most conventional health care wisdom, aside from always refusing statins. However, I had given up gluten many years before. In the past, I had done Atkins, vegetarianism, veganism and Macrobiotics. It was then that Mark spoke to my running group, which I had joined to successfully walk a half marathon. What he said made sense, but I stubbornly refused to completely give up daily white rice, white potatoes, corn tortillas, dairy, or beans. And I sure wasn’t going to fast when there was food available. But I did take some advice.

Overcoming Anxiety: I Finally Feel Comfortable in My Own Skin

I have always been a fit person. In my teens and early twenties I spent countless hours both weight lifting and performing extensive cardio routines in the gym. I worked hard in all areas of my life— juggling school, work, and an excessive fitness routine. I was young and insecure and put in two (or more) workouts per day to attain an ideal figure. I was in great shape, but over-stressed and exhausted from over-training. I had issues with reoccurring anxiety attacks as well as hypoglycemia. I was a solid 120 with great muscle definition and a low body fat percentage, but I didn’t feel healthy. I often felt weak and fatigued. By the age of 22, the pressure of work-life balance was causing issues in all aspects of my life. After visiting a physician, it was determined I should be administered anxiety medication to help my stress levels. Like most medications, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) are known to cause major side effect—one of the most common being weight gain. The medication, along with my heavy carbohydrate and low protein intake, sent my weight up by 20 lbs. At the age of 23, I weighed 140 lbs at only 5’2”.

Inspired by Robin Williams: A Different Kind of Success Story

This is not your typical Friday transformation story. There are no photographs, even though there has been substantial weight loss, increased energy, improved cognition and happiness in my Primal Blueprint journey. This is a different kind of story. The death of Robin Williams is what prompted me to write this.

The part of my story that is relevant to this community starts twenty years ago in San Francisco during the month of August. Having financial difficulties that were putting a strain on my marriage, I started to deliver food at night for various restaurants throughout the city. I was in my thirties, a vegetarian for approximately three years, and not sure of what I wanted to be when I grew up. My wife and I worked from home and cooked all the time to feed the beast, so to speak. The food was great but we always wanted more a short time later. We ate lots of whole grains, veggies, beans and tofu. It was all organic, so of course it was healthy. I used to get up and run three miles a day and was pretty thin. This all may have appeared well and good—but I was losing my mind.

Going Primal Banished My Rosacea and Chronic IBS Symptoms

It’s only when I look back on my progress that I’m really in awe of what going Primal has done for me. Since the age of 13, I have battled with severe Rosacea acne and chronic IBS. After consulting with a dermatologist and gastroenterologist, it was decided that the two were linked. My hormones were going crazy, I was getting teased at school big time, and because of it I was getting a nervous stomach every morning before class. The two issues got so bad that I was put on Accutane (a heavy duty acne medication) and stomach meds to help control my symptoms. Not once did either doctor suggest that my diet was the cause of all my troubles. In fact, on two separate occasions I asked my dermatologist if my sugar binges were causing my acne, and she vehemently denied it.

Over 100 Pounds Lost: Things Just Keep Getting Better and Better

My story starts with a girl, two actually, to be accurate, and also a beloved uncle. The ladies are my daughter and my wife. After years trying to start a family, my wife and I were fortunate to adopt our daughter from foster care in 2011. At that time, and for most of my adult life, I had been morbidly obese between 250 and 300 lbs at 5 foot 9. I’d like to say that becoming a parent, as amazing and life-changing as it was every single day, was enough to lead to dramatic changes to my daily eating and exercise habits, it wasn’t. I felt an increased need to be healthy to contribute more on a daily basis to my wife and daughter, yet still things went on as before. I was in a health netherworld of no major illnesses but not what I would describe as vitality of any sort. I certainly was not thriving. I was living what I understand now was a diminished life, both physically and mentally.

It Was Time to Change: 228 Pounds Lost and Lifelong Dreams Realized

I have been morbidly obese practically my entire life. By the time I was 10 years old, I was a chubby kid, weighing in at over 100 pounds. I was in size 44 pants by the time I was in high school and kept going up from there. In November 2010, I weighed 440 pounds (200 kg). I was morbidly obese, lacked confidence, and when it came to my own life, I lived in constant fear that I was having a heart attack every time I was short of breath. I had discretely (and without doctor’s orders) started taking aspirin daily because I knew it was only a matter of time before I followed in the footsteps of almost every other male in my family and had a heart attack. I suffered from massive acid reflux, which also was a source of heart disease fears, and I was pre-diabetic and had constant pain in my joints and lower back.
