Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

The Way I Used to Live Life Was Slowly Destroying Me

My story is interesting because I could have died.

You would think that a healthcare professional like myself would have learned everything that was necessary to be personally healthy. At least two years ago I would have thought that—but, not true. Medical and dental professionals have a paltry amount of nutritional training—and no training in the importance of primal nutrition and lifestyle.

I am a periodontist: a dentist who has specialized in the treatment of gum disease. Today, I have been in practice in South Carolina for 40 years. That is a long time. When my story began, I was in practice for 32 years.

Greetings readers, certainly you’ve heard about the great reception and momentum created with the launch of the Primal Blueprint Expert Certification back in late August. We have nearly 500 students in our program now, and over 100 have already graduated and attained their Primal Blueprint Certified Expert status. I started this program as a way to offer a deeper experience to the Primal enthusiast who craved more, or perhaps wanted to enhance his or her professional standing with more education. It’s gratifying to notice that we indeed have a hard-core subsection within the Primal/paleo/ancestral health community that wants to truly “own” the principles, the philosophy, and the practical elements of day-to-day Primal living.

How I Reclaimed My Body and Health with Primal Living

My initial interest in Mark’s Primal Blueprint was, I’ll admit, primarily driven by aesthetics. I wanted to improve my physical appearance. During my teens and early 20´s I´d been super fit, but those days were long gone. At 38, I didn’t enjoy looking at a middle aged overweight guy in the mirror. The image was accompanied by thoughts of how I use to be. I wanted to get back my youthful physique. It’s not that I wasn’t concerned about my health. It’s just that other than getting fatter and less fit, I hadn’t suffered any acute illness. Sure I was heading for a higher risk of coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke, but I hadn’t had any signs or symptoms yet. I wasn’t a smoker or a frequent, heavy drinker. I´d kept away from fatty foods and ate plenty of whole grains so I must be healthy, right? Wrong!

The Primal Blueprint lifestyle has positively changed my life, the lives of my family members, and a growing number of friends. I’m delighted to report that I (at age 59) have lost 42 pounds, 6% of my body fat and 25 inches. My husband (age 64) has lost 31 pounds, my grown children and their families have lost weight, look great, and we all have become much healthier, thanks to the Primal Blueprint diet and lifestyle. And, perhaps best of all, my fasting glucose readings have dropped about 70 points, to below diabetic level.

My whole life, I had horrible gas. It was just how I was, and my parents, siblings, and I all accepted it as normal. As I got older and accumulated a good deal of good friends, this began to be more and more problematic. I would find myself feeling like my gut was near bursting because I would hold this in during school to avoid social excommunication. On top of that, I had the WORST allergies. I could barely go outside without sneezing a ton, having an itchy nose, ears, and throat, or having a stuffy nose and itchy skin. Even indoors I would sneeze all day long. I had to put the tissue box and trash can next to my desk on occasion. It sucked—it really did. I don’t know how I would have lived my life that way.

What if I stopped procrastinating on writing my story? Why haven’t I written it so far? Is it worth it? Is it boring? Maybe yes or maybe no. If I don’t start, I think I will never know. As I fly from Houston to Europe, I’m getting it done. So what do I want you to take away after reading these pages? I want you to know my story first, then relate it to your own journey and why you are reading another story about weight loss. Is my story only about weight loss? I’ll let you decide.

First, I grew up in South America—a place where the culture encourages people to over eat corn, rice, and wheat flour (pretty much lots of refined carbohydrates). So when I was growing up, I was never skinny. I had a few extra pounds, but I was active enough to be strong. When I was 14, I fell in love with mountain biking and mountain trekking. The two activities became my sports and I would do them three to five times a week. But for my diet, I was still eating lots of food. So what was the problem? I was in my late teens, strong, never slim, but not fat. The catch was, the problems came later.
