Meet Mark

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Sisson. I’m 63 years young. I live and work in Malibu, California. In a past life I was a professional marathoner and triathlete. Now my life goal is to help 100 million people get healthy. I started this blog in 2006 to empower people to take full responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing, and critically rethinking everything we’ve assumed to be true about health and wellness...

Before I state anything, I just want to thank Jesus Christ for the opportunity of life and the strength to get through this process. Life is truly a gift from God.

In every group of friends there is the good looking one, the athletic one, the fun one, the quiet one, and of course, there’s the chunky one. I was always the chunky one.

I spent my entire life fluctuating in weight – gaining during times of stress, then running long distances and starving myself to fit into my suit pants again for weddings. It was a burden not only on my body, but on my bank account, as all my clothes would get tight (thankfully the “fitted” look came back into style).

Hi, I’m Fisher, at my heaviest I was about 275 pounds.

From the beginning of my life I was always very active. I was always playing sports and my main discipline was martial arts, specifically Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do. Even after I graduated from college I was 150 pounds and a golf professional.

Shortly after I began my career as a golf professional, I became very ill with pneumonia. I went from running three miles a day in 20 minutes and benching twice my weight, to not being able to walk five paces without collapsing. Even after my recovery from the pneumonia, my lungs were still far from working efficiently. I was on the shelf for years. During this time I was eating with no restrictions. Anything was okay, so I soon began to put on the pounds.

I remember my senior year of high school before deciding to go Primal. I went to a small high school just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was a two time state qualifier in track in field for the 4×200 meter relay. I ran sprints in track in the spring, and ran cross country in fall to stay in shape and work on running form. As you can guess with all this constant working out (especially in cross where I was running an average of 3-5 miles per practice, averaging close to 30 miles per week), I was a carb hound! On average, I was probably consuming about 500 grams of carbs and consuming close to 4000 calories daily, consisting of 95% junk foods like pastas, cookies, ice cream, sandwiches, and all the other artificial foods you can think of.

My name is Ryan and I am a 35 year old father of two beautiful daughters, ages three and nearly two. I am also a loving husband to an amazing wife who has been an amazing support to me over the years.

Ever since I was six weeks old, I have been in and out of hospital with severe, type two, brittle asthma. This form of asthma basically means that I can be fine one minute, and go into a major asthma attack the next without warning.

Throughout my years at school, I was reasonably healthy. I even played state level squash in Australia and trained five to six days a week. I was also an avid outdoors lover. On weekends that I was not playing squash in competitions, I was out hiking and camping before heading back into the classroom for school on Mondays.

Primal eating gave me my life back. Allowed me to stay in shape, enjoy eating, and not suffer. Living the Primal life is now my passion, it’s become that topic I always bring up to friends and strangers that causes my wife to roll her eyes and shh me – well, Primal and Star Wars…

I was born with a leaky valve in my heart (split aortic) and an enlarged aorta. When I was a kid I was told I could never play contact sports, weight lift or really do anything a healthy North American (Canadian) boy wants to do! It was devastating to watch other boys play…

My weight has always been something that I have struggled with. From a young age I had a very love/hate relationship with food. As in I loved eating it and hated when it was gone. Due to this I was a very large teenager. After college, I decided to lose weight and I managed it… but I was eating barely anything, running three to six miles a day, Thai Boxing twice a week, gym five times a week and having two personal training sessions a week. It just wasn’t sustainable. As soon as I stopped all the “Chronic Cardio” I just piled the weight back on.
