5 Tips to Avoid Temptation

1. Drink a glass of water

Sometimes when you have a craving for something sweet, you are simply dehydrated. Drink a glass of cool water to see if that quells your craving.

2. Don’t surround yourself with it!

If the chips are in the pantry or the pastries are in the bread drawer, it’s that much harder to say no. Don’t surround yourself with these temptations, genius! The “company” and the “kids” will do just fine without having unhealthy treats at the ready – and so will you. While we all face temptations at work and in public, at home, it’s fairly easy to control what you eat, so don’t add to the temptation. Hint: see if you can get your boss and team to agree to have only water and reduced-calorie juices or diet sodas instead of more sugary fare. If your company serves lunches, ask about getting healthier options. And when succumbing to the vending machine, go for the nuts instead of chips or candy.

Would Grok Chow the Cheese Plate?

Is cheese healthy? I get asked this question a lot, and I do want to preface it by stating that if there were a definitive answer, we’d probably know it by now. I’m not a big dairy advocate, especially not in light of the way so much of it is processed and manipulated to death, but I don’t completely avoid cheese, either. My personal view of cheese is that it’s on the “okay” list. I eat it occasionally, but it’s not a major source of my calories. But let’s consider the issue further. This post is by no means the last word on cheese, but I hope these thoughts will be helpful to you if you’re debating whether or not to keep cheese in your diet. (And I welcome your thoughts as always. Even you vegans.)

Cancer Rates Are Falling. Let’s Keep It That Way.

October is the month for breast cancer awareness, and there’s been some encouraging news. Although the month began with some critics arguing that the pink ribbon campaign has created a false sense of security that the breast cancer battle is under control – that pink ribbon ubiquity has actually hindered research and progress – a couple of recent studies are encouraging. The Big Pharma disaster, aka HRT (hormone replacement therapy), inflated breast cancer cases. As doctors are now more cautious about recommending and prescribing this course of treatment for women, breast cancer rates have dropped.

But it’s not just breast cancer. Encouragingly, across the board, we’re seeing slight but meaningful drops in some types of cancer, particularly in at-risk groups. A few standouts: lung cancer has dropped a bit in women (women are more at risk to begin with). Colorectal cancers are down in men, largely due to better screening practices.
