Primal Pies: Fill ‘er Up

A few weeks ago we previewed a recipe for a flourless pie crust. Our only regret? We didn’t actually tell you what you could be filling those pie crusts with!

With the fall season now in full swing (seriously… where did summer go?) we wanted to offer up a few Primal pie fillings. Granted, some are higher than we’d like in carb counts, but when you compare it to the alternatives, it looks a whole lot…errr…sweeter!

Hello Mark, I thought I would finally make good on my promise to send you some pics and a more understandable story for my Primal testimonial.

Let me start this with a disclaimer: I am no Supermike or Mark, but I have made advances in the last couple months that are amazing to me and have no doubt that my health and wellness will only continue to improve on The Primal Blueprint. I am no doctor, nor do I claim to be a fitness guru or sexy model icon. 😉

That being said, here is my story:

As a kid, I was always very active and fit. I ran 5k’s, won several triathlons and was a successful tennis and soccer player. I got into lifting weights when I left for college and would have considered myself in very decent shape at a very muscular 6′4″ 245 pounds and about 12-15% body fat. I then moved to Southern Cali at ages 19 and 20 and lived successfully as a personal trainer. After 9/11 happened, I joined the Army doing what I thought was my patriotic duty. While training in the Army, I got very very sick with a laundry list of ailments including pneumonia. I was medically discharged from the army at a very sickly 188 pounds. For a couple years after this, I played around in film and television and worked as a bouncer in bars – also working the occasional odd job. Finally fed up with living check to check, starving and being permanently flat broke… I decided to join the corporate world.

The Primal Stance on Exercise Equipment

Personal GymPrimal living in today’s decidedly post-Paleo world requires making at least a few concessions. We simply cannot live in exact accord with the ways of Primal man. For most of us, it’s just not feasible to live completely off the land (too many humans and their developments getting in the way). And besides, even if we could revert to total hunter-gatherer mode, would we? As much as we try to follow the Primal Blueprint, we have grown accustomed to the benefits (yes, there are some!) of living in the modern world. Plus, there are certain creature comforts – like evolutionary knowledge, nutritional science,  and developments in kinesiology – that rely on modern science and inform, drive, and continually legitimize the fundamentals of the Primal Blueprint. After all, Grok lived the way he did because of necessity; we attempt to emulate his lifestyle as a personal choice.

The High-Tech, High-Risk State of Maternity Care

I’ve been known to critique various elements of the medical establishment now and then, it’s true. (Anyone for a good Big Pharma rout?) But I’ll admit I’m venturing into new and weighty territory today. (My Y chromosome and I will tread lightly and respectfully, I promise.) It’s been a while since my own (indirect) experience in the obstetrics arena, but a new report came across my radar last week that led my mind back to the maternity ward.

It’s the Evidence-Based Maternity Care report (PDF), a collaborative effort of the Childbirth Connection non-profit organization, the Reforming States Group, and the Milbank Memorial Fund. The report was picked up by a modest number of news organizations, but it was reviewed by dozens of top physicians and policy makers across the U.S.
