Welcome to the All-New Mark’s Daily Apple!

Welcome, everyone, to the redesign of Mark’s Daily Apple!

If you watched the video you know the basics already, but here is a more thorough introduction to the new site.

We really did outgrow our old site. Loyal MDA readers wanted more ways to connect with me and the community so I’ve tried to incorporate some elements into the site that help facilitate this.

There are so many things that have been updated! I’ll try to be brief and just touch on some of the more important changes.

[UPDATE: Existing newsletter subscribers will be sent the confirmation email over the course of the entire week. If you are an existing newsletter subscriber and don’t want to wait to for the Free Introduction to The Primal Blueprint and want to ensure you get this week’s newsletter go ahead and enter your email address Weekly Newsletter Subscribe box in the sidebar and you’ll get the confirmation link immediately. Thanks, everyone!]

– Starting at the top. As I mentioned I ditched the old cartoon image of me in exchange for photos of me living the Primal lifestyle. Whenever you refresh the page a new photo will load. I hope the photos inspire you to get out there and stay active. If a 55 year old dude can stay fit so can you. I’ll plan on updating these fairly regularly so stay tuned.

– I’ve added the forum back. Many early MDA readers may remember that we originally had a forum. There were a number of reasons why I ended up removing it, but needless to say I think the community is robust enough now to fully appreciate a forum based around the Primal Blueprint and everything related to health and fitness. I hope you all take advantage of the forum to share your ideas, success stories, recipes, workouts and experiences relating to the Primal Blueprint.

– Next, jumping over to the sidebar: There are three ways to subscribe to MDA content now: by subscribing to the Weekly Newsletter, by subscribing to our RSS feed, and (at the bottom of the page) by subscribing to each day’s post via email. Just click the “Feeds” tab at the top of the page for more information on all of these ways to get MDA content delivered to you.

By the way, if you sign up for the newsletter now you will receive the complete introduction to my new book, The Primal Blueprint, for free. If you’ve already signed up for the newsletter there is no need to sign up again, but, as I mentioned in the video, you do need to click on the link in the confirm email you will be receiving today. Once you do you will the get the introduction delivered to immediately and will begin to receive all the new features I’ve added to our newsletter.

Ok. What else do we have?

Well, I’ve also addressed some of the navigation shortcomings found on the old site. To make a long story short you can view every post ever published on MDA by clicking “Site Map” at the bottom of the page. Search Results are now truncated versions of the post instead of full posts. Archives are now organized by category and date. And we now have a nifty “Top Posts” section that will highlight the latest and best the site has to offer.

There are a few more notable sections in the sidebar. “Mark’s Daily Apple TV” will be the go-to place for our latest videos. I’ll be putting up Primal related videos here. Sometimes they will be from around the net, but I do plan on creating my own on a more regular basis in the future so stay tuned.

The “Connect with Mark” section provides a way to stay in touch with me personally. Join me on Facebook and Twitter.

“Sites Mark Visits” is a rotating blogroll. Every time you refresh the page this list will update, so keep coming back for more of my favorite sites.

“Grok in the Wild” is a Flickr photo stream of members from the MDA community sporting the “Grok On!” t-shirts. I just released these shirts. They are American Apparel shirts and feature our new Grok logo. Send me a pic of you acting like Grok in one of our t-shirts and I’ll add you to the stream.  And check out the pics. Son of Grok and others have already sent in photos of themselves Getting Primal.

Some other features include the ability to email and share a blog post with others by clicking “Share This” and also the ability to print out a printer-friendly version of a blog post.

Lastly, the comment section has been improved. You can now add an avatar to all of your comments and you can reply to specific comments. Test it out to see how it works.

If you poke around you’ll also find information on Primal Nutrition products including my book The Primal Blueprint.

Apart from the design changes I also have some great new content up my sleeve that I plan to roll out soon, so check back daily.

I would love to hear your feedback. If you notice any broken links or funky problems, or just have a comment or question please let me know. We’ll be working out all the bugs and site quirks in the next few days.

And for everyone that comments I’ll be holding a random drawing tomorrow afternoon. The winner will receive a free Grok On! t-shirt.

Just submit a comment and you could be one of the first to sport our all-new Grok apparel. I’ll be in touch with the winner by 4:00 pm PST tomorrow via email, so be sure to enter your email address correctly.

You want comments? We got comments:

Imagine you’re George Clooney. Take a moment to admire your grooming and wit. Okay, now imagine someone walks up to you and asks, “What’s your name?” You say, “I’m George Clooney.” Or maybe you say, “I’m the Clooninator!” You don’t say “I’m George of George Clooney Sells Movies Blog” and you certainly don’t say, “I’m Clooney Weight Loss Plan”. So while spam is technically meat, it ain’t anywhere near Primal. Please nickname yourself something your friends would call you.

  1. Hi Mark! The new design is great. As others already posted, the previous page was already terrific, but this is even better!

I tried to order the book, but when I submitted the order, it said I need to “fill in valuable info in highlighted areas”. Didn’t see any highlighted areas not filled in, will try again.

Thanks again for all of the info on the website and for all of the work that you put into it.

    • Deborah…make sure you are selecting a shipping method. That stumped me for a couple minutes. You have to select the Media method to get the free shipping.

  3. Hi Mark,

I’ve only known about your site for a couple of weeks now, but I read it daily! I love the new design, and can’t wait to go through the archives!

  5. Hello from M’sia,

Great layout Mark. Well done! I love the new site map feature for browsing through older content. Looks way more organized now.

I’ve also ordered Primal Blueprint and can’t wait to get my hands on it. Exciting times.

    Grok on!

  6. Mark,

Grok lives!!! T-shirts look great as well as the website. To kick-off the new book I am doing a before and after. I am trying to put together a blog/website to document my progress. As soon as it is up I will let you and other know. Truly will be putting The Primal Blueprint to the test and am confident my ideal weight goal will be met. Grok On!

  7. Big ups for the new site Mark! Loving the design and really easy to navigate. Just pre-ordered the book so will be eargerly waiting it’s arrival :)

  8. Wow, this is 100x’s easier to navigate. Very clean and attractive. Can’t wait to use the forum.

  9. Mark,

I love the new look. I love all the little details (such as a changing header graphic). Awesome job on this…and still has a “clean” feel with all of the features.

I’m going to take a cool picture with my Grok T-shirt. My girlfriend is a high-end fashion designer in Seattle and I may try to sneak up on stage (she’d kill me, but it would be worth it).

Love the site…and thanks for adding me to your blog roll…I’ll keep sending visitors your way, because your site is definitely one of my favorites.

    Here’s to a great summer!

  10. I love the site. I am adding to my daily read list. I have just begun the journey to better health and appreciate the information.

  11. Looking great! I liked the red motif before, but I have to admit that green works better with the primal thing.

I don’t see anything really wonky. The Popular Posts tab in the sidebar isn’t showing anything yet, but that might be because it just hasn’t had time to aggregate stats yet.

Putting the newsletter subscribe and search boxes at both the top and bottom of the site was a great idea.

Can’t wait to read the book.

  12. I LOVE the search function, but here at work I’m still stuck with IE 6, and in the comments section I can’t see the names, or the buttons to reply/quote that I imagine are there. All I can see is the text and light green boxes. I will take another look when I get home!

  13. Mark – very nice indeed (especially the ralaxing green), and thanks for featuring my video in the sidebar!

Few small things I thought I would mention:

    – a bugbear for me on the search functions of most blogs is that in the results you get a big chunk of the article, not just it’s name. For me, in a perfect search function, you would get a list of results in the same format as you have the archives in, so that you can decide the best one to look at from the titles. Otherwise if there are lots of results it can take a long time to find what you are looking for. I have the same problem on my blog so can appreciate it’s not necessarily something the software can do – but I thought I’d raise it.

    – it took me a while to figure out how to change the image on my forum profile: I was convinced I would be able to do it in the same place as you change your regular details – but of course I have to change my gravatar which is done by clicking on the button at the bottom of a comments section and going to the gravatar account management page. Could there be a link to the gravatar admin on the same page as you can edit your forum profile information to save confusion?

    – Finally, I was also hunting around for a link to my profile when I was elsewhere in the site – then realised the link is only visible when you are in the forums area. Most sites have the “Hi, Methuselah” and “logout” links in the top right of every page so that you feel like you are logged into the site rather than just the forums – which I guess is kind of true if you are also able to comment using your logged-in credentials.

Just some thoughts – as I say, I think the redesign is excellent and am looking forward to spending some time on the new site.

Methuselah wrote on May 12th, 2009
    • Thanks for the feedback, Methuselah. We are in the process of adding More tags to archived posts so that search results don’t display the full blog post. The search results won’t be just titles but they will be much shorter than the full blog post.

I’ll see if we can add the gravatar link to the forum.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope you’re seeing some good traffic from the link!

  17. The new look is awesome! I just pre-ordered your book and I can’t wait to get read it. The forum is a great idea too. There are so many people out there with great ideas and tips and now we have a centralized place to talk about it. Thanks again Mark for all you do for we, the aspiring Groks of the world.

  19. Mark,
So far I absolutely love the new design. The colors are soothing, the layout is clean, and frankly its one of the best transformations I’ve seen. Many website overhauls end up killing things that users have known and loved in favor of flashy webby-2.0 crap.

ON THE OTHER HAND . . . the page for ordering the book is unfortunately much too much like every single flashy e-book salesy website out there. Too long, too much info, too many glowing testimonials…. I *believe* in the Primal Blueprint, but the site makes me think you’re trying to sell snake oil.

My two cents. Thanks, and keep up the amazing work.

I’m ordering 4 books, but I might do it over the phone – the website has insecure content so having the ordering info on the same page makes my browser not trust the encryption…. just fyi.

  20. it looks awesome !!
I miss the red color but this is fresh.
    =)
I think it’s great that you have the categories listed on the top of the page instead on the side, it is definitely more user friendly!

  28. My text re-sizing wheel on my mouse won’t work on this site, that sucks.
It also sucks that when I go through the menu to resize the text, it goes off the side of the page instead of reformatting to fit my screen. I have to scroll back and forth to read the article. This is bad for people with vision issues.

  30. The redesign looks very professional and fits the new spirit of the progressive MDA. Perhaps a stylized, small iconized apple might remain behind your name in the blog header, a slightly transparentized-blackened graphic behind the name, to the left. I’d volunteer to generate such a graphic if you’re interested.

Best to you in the future, Mark.

  33. I just thought of something I wouldn’t mind seeing.

How about tags? Tags offer more options than search and can be more specific.

For example, just now I did a search for the word “coffee” because I wanted to see Mark’s opinion about coffee.

The search results gave me a bunch of results which contain the word coffee, but it was difficult to find one that was only or mainly about coffee.

If tags were introduced, a post that was mainly or only about coffee could be tagged as “coffee” and then there could be a tag cloud or a more granular keyword specific type search for that.

Love it. …You must get that awesome feeling of someone who just bought a Porsche and gets jazzed every time they walk to their car — “that’s MINE.” lol
