So i've been doing a yoga dvd on my off day (sunday) and think it's great. it plugs the holes in my training and helps with recovery.

Does anyone else do yoga here?

If you have to do yoga for recovery, you're not working out hard!

Jokes aside, I really want to start doing it. I recently got a fitness test done and my flexibilty score was abysmal. I hope yoga will improve it.

Yup...I'm a big Yoga fan. Being doing it on and off for the past 15 years. Have moved more and more towards Ashtanga Yoga over the past years...handstands and chaturanga's are fabulous body-weight exercises.

By the way...just got hubby into Yoga recently as well. He's developed a superb upper-body from it over the past few weeks.

I love yoga as well. Totally agree about chaturangas, those are an awesome workout- I love the challenge of it and the way it makes me feel. I do enjoy some the relaxation as well, but challenging my body each week to see what I am able to do is just too much fun. I am not doing much now though as I am due any day w/ baby #3(so obviously not too many headstands for me :). I have been doing yoga off and on for about 8 yrs. I find at times I haven't wanted that to be my sole workout and felt great at it and then others not so much, but I try to keep changing up what I am doing even slightly so that it is something I enjoy.

No headstands for me yet... only on week 3 (once per week) but I can tell I'm already getting better.

After the 1st time my upper back muscles and all down the center of my spine were destroyed... today (after 3rd time) they are only partially destoryed :D

  6. I would give anything to be physically able to do some yoga right now. Once my disc is back where it belongs, I'll be there. But maybe not ashtanga to start off with...

Getting into yoga is one of my focuses right now. I'm starting with 15 minutes every other day. I have always had very tight muscles and have been running for 20 years so I know I really need it. I really admired the flexibility the guy in the most recent primal w/out video had.

Hello! Yogini, right here. I'm into Kundalini Yoga, which is quite a bit different from some of the other forms more popular in the west. Changed my life. Helps tremendously with stress alleviation, sleep, eating disorders, healing body/mind/soul, self-esteem....pretty much everything.

PrimalK, you could do Kundalini Yoga, for sure. It's not "pretzel" yoga.

I have just begun to practice yoga, and I'm loving it. Currently hatha, but I want to try it all.

  10. I practice Bikram Yoga. It's very intense. 105 degrees in 40% humidity. I feel like a million bucks everytime I finish!

  12. I indulge on and off, I took classes at my university gym and have a couple of DVDs...
I always feel much better afterwards - not so much a spiritual thing as a reeeeeally deep stretch!

    NorthernMonkey:
Depends on which form you're doing. Some forms are pure physical, some are more spiritual-oriented, some are both. In general, something you would have taken at university or have a DVD for would likely be one of the more physical forms (which are the most popular in the U.S.).

The original purpose of the physical forms was actually to prepare the body to sit in meditation for long periods of time, but that has gotten lost in translation somehow.

Love yoga! I usually stick to the routine in P90X, since there is always room for improvement...

Does anybody else have limbs that fall asleep during some of the practices? Often my feet/legs will fall asleep during poses like half-moon...

  15. The healthiest I ever feel is when I am regularly practicing yoga. Unfortunately, this semester at school has left me no time for regular practice. I still try to fit in a few rounds of sun salutations before sprinting in the morning. Even just ten minutes of yoga gives me physical strength and mental clarity for the rest of the day. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Jess, I asked my teacher about this today, and she had no idea. It happens to me often.

I used to practise yoga alongside meditation and had never felt better in my life.
Unfortunately due to my big move in the summer and my change in circumstances, I am not doing it much anymore.

Anyone who likes to use some guidance and has not much money, I can highly recommend http://www.yogamazing.com. On that site, Chaz posts podcasts which can easily be used for shorter routines. I have found them to be very helpful and beneficial.

I have had some limbs going asleep in certain poses for me myself that generally means my alignment is off somewhere and my breathing is not in tune. However, if I am just not "getting" the pose I come out and try again or move on to a different pose.

I'm currently training to be a yoga teacher, doing Iyengar style yoga (focuses on alignment of the spine). I never realised why I felt so good after a session, now I know it is because there are so few times in our daily lives that we are able to focus inwards and be in the present moment. Yoga is a fantastic discipline, and a dsicipline in which there is no goal to 'be the perfect yogi', but rather a constant process of learning, adjusting and adapting. I think it compliments all other forms of exercise and will help you really see what your body needs.

misathemeb, fwiw, I have some recommendations for you if you like Rodney Yee but find he is not enough, one session of 20mins isnt really enough for me unless I am pushed for time.

Baron Baptiste is great, his 'Live' dvd that has three practices on it is pretty good, though it may be hard to come by. up from there is Bryan Kest, he sells downloadable practices on his website, I have one of them and its great, seriously challenging, not so much the postures but the sequencing of simple poses in a vinyasa flow, you can make it as hard or easy as you like. Very strengthening. Then real ashtanga starts with the primary series, David Swenson has a dvd, and he has a beautiful practice. If you know what bit torrent is, you will be able to find him there. I have done ashtanga with David Swenson and he is truly awesome. I have been practicing for about ten years and teaching for about 18 months. I know David is on youtube if you want to check him out, dont know if Baron or Bryan are on there but probably. Hope that helps!
