Survival week is upon us again and I was thinking maybe we also need a little work-out motivation. The change of seasons has us feeling lackluster and lazy. Post your work-out every day this week for accountability even if it's something little. We need to get our exercise mojo back! All are welcome- if you cross-fit, P90X, run, lift heavy things, whatever- stop by and post your work-out so we can be inspired!

Cyclocross (my husband aptly calls it psycho cross) bike race today... It was pouring, cold about 35 and wind gusts up to 40 mph during the race...deep puddles with 35 degree water going 1/3 way up my shins very cold and totally soaked my feet 6x+ each loop...so much mud with 2 sets of barriers, 1 huge log, two hills I couldn't ride up so 5 dismounts for each of the 4 loops...it was hard...whole course was soggy or deep mud not any part was easy or fast for me.
Puddles in the rocky root section where you get flats so a little of unknown what you'd hit going through the puddles. Got some dirt/mud in my mouth so a bit gritty...it was tough conditions..all the kids soccer games were canceled but not cyclocross.
Tomorrow we start P90X...installed pull up bar today.

FANTASTIC idea DCKMB!
Today I didn't do anything. I'm looking forward to doing *something* tomorrow. As it stands I have to go in to work 2 hours early (6:30 am) and work til 5. Check in at the restaurant and possibly go back to work til 7pm.
So... I've decided that if I'm on my feet most of the day, cutting and lifting spools for 12 hours, that's sufficient workout. If my boss has me sitting at the desk and building, It's push-ups, pull-ups, burpees and whatever else I can figure out when I get home.

Today was a "move slowly" day - a lot of walking (though sadly most of it was in parking lots and other unnatural settings). I'm going 26.2 for what may well be the last time this weekend, and I'm trying not to get hurt.

Good luck, Geoff. I understand the bittersweet feelings of letting go of the long distance stuff...
Diana- sounds like you are going to be VERY active this week!
Bikerpike- that cyclocross sounds insane! Good luck with P90X.

Yeah I was wondering about something, and am curious what you all think when it comes to work and exercise...
My job schedule will be something like this:
M-F 8:30-5:00
About 4-5 hours on foot, walking or standing. Some moderate to heavy lifting.15-20 hours per week:
Working in a kitchen. Salads/desserts. Very fast pace job. Not much carrying or lifting that I can foresee.I also clean for a cat lady. 2 hours on Saturday. Walking, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping.
Now... what would an appropriate amount of additional exercise look like?

Two four mile beach walks, fast clip. First walks with a shirt since July; windy, cool, sunny. I couldn't believe how many were bundled like it was cold or something. It was perfect walking weather.

Awesome post DCKMB, I am going to join in as I am wanting to up my exercise and get more into the crossfit regime.
Today I fly fished for an hour in a very cold, small stream. Stumbled across rocks, walked against the current. Continual casting (didn't catch a damn thing but trees and weeds). My feet were frozen by the time I got out of the water.
Just tried out my new jump rope for about 2 minutes of jumping rope. I didn't remember just how good of a workout jumproping is until now that I feel it in the backs of my legs. I am seriously out of jump rope shape!
Today was a "rest" day for me because my muscles are sore from air squats and mtn biking yesterday.Posted 1 month ago # -
I coached a hockey practice today. I stood around saying again, again, again...... (5 points to anyone who gets the joke)
But this is a good idea. I'm going to try to take some motivation from this.

DCKB - I hear you. After 25 years of chronic cardio I'm going fully PB after this marathon. I feel like I'm leaving my wife for another woman.

I like this and will join yas!
I ran 4.6 miles and did a half mile cooldown walk.
I am very motivated for a very workout week!
Geoff and DCKB, Since Crossfit I have reduced my running from 4 days a week to about 2. However my crossfit trainer has given me workouts that include sprinting 400 and 800 meters. Helps me balance it out, but now I really don't see myself becoming a long distance runner. I am liking the crossfit and the shorter workouts.

Diana- I would say since you've got the movement down that maybe just focus on some extra body weight exercises- push-ups, pull-ups, wall sits, etc. Sounds like you are gonna be on your feet quite a bit.
Geoff, which 'thon are you doing if you don't mind me asking?
Everyone is doing so great and the week hasn't even started yet! I'm going to LOVE this thread!

Geoff..hope your change to fully PB goes smoothly.
I'm not sure how or if I can handle it...after training for Ironman 15+ hours a week last couple years...it's hard to do less and go slower. I like training...still debating how to handle this...I plan on doing another Ironman next November.

Today, Kali (Escrima/Arnis) class. Tomorrow, sub-zero tabata sprints!

Marine Corps Marathon. Washington, D.C. First time doing this one since 2001. I can almost guarantee this one should be more fun than last time.
BikerPike - I truly don't know what I'm going to find once I move to PB, and that's the essence of my worry. I've read Maffetone a bunch and practiced his method half-heartedly for a few years, so the slow movement part doesn't bother me. Still there's a part of my identity that's bound to endurance athletics. Letting go of that part of me will be hard.

DCKMB, this is a great thread. I hope having to report here will give me the much needed kick in the rear.

Did some uphill sprints this morning at 5:30! Anyone else notice how it's hard to see ground when you're sprinting where there's no light? :P Makes for some sketchy footing at times!

More "move slowly" on my local trail about 45 minutes of walking, hiking, and easy jogging. I had intended to sprint but my left hip wasn't co-operating. Made no sense to risk injury, so I just slowed down and enjoyed a crisp fall morning under the foliage.

"Move Slowly" - 55 minutes of stroll in the sun with 15 45-degree pushups on a park bench.

lovestoclimb- what is Kali (Escrima/Arnis)? Sounds interesting.
Maba- good on you for getting out there!
Geoff, I also followed maffetone for a few years before ditching the long distance. Definitely helped but I realize the constant inflammation was still there looking back on it.
Today's work-out for me:
100 rope jumps
21 knee to elbows
50 push-ups (some will have to be girlie style)
15 assisted pull-ups
100 rope jumps
15 knee to elbows
35 push-ups
12 assisted pull ups
100 rope jumps
12 knee to elbows
20 push-ups
9 assisted pull-upsPosted 1 month ago # -
DCKMB - When you practiced Maffetone's system did you follow his dietary recommendations as well as his exercise ones? Did you find your exercise pace got faster over time?
Shortly before I read PB I read the new edition of "In Fitness and in Health." It seems Maffetone's system is surprisingly similar to Mark's, but Mark's seems more balanced to me. Maffetone seems to place too much emphasis on the aerobic side to the detriment of weights and sprinting.
FWIW, my "MAF number" is right in the middle of Mark's "move slowly" zone, so I'm familiar with the feeling of that effort level.

Geoff- nope, didn't even pay attention to his dietary recommendations. Was only interested in the concept of keeping the heart rate below a certain number- (I can't remember what my MAF was- I think it was 142) so I tried to keep everything below that. My pace did improve but not so significantly that I was wowed by it. And it also started getting irritating that I would spend up to 6+ training hours on Saturdays doing long slow runs because I had to keep the heart rate so low and it would take FOREVER to get in the mileage for whatever I happened to be training for. And also didn't think it was right that he shunned weights and sprints.

1 hour 15 minutes walking, 15 minutes sprint intervals, 10 minutes yoga cool down. Awesome day :)

I am so totally brain tired right now. IF I can pull myself together after supper, I'll do something with weight. I've been on my feet for 10 of the last 12 work hours, so I guess I got that "move slowly" thing covered for today.

@DCKMB - Kali, I believe, is the modern combination of Escrima (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eskrima) and Arnis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Arnis).
Escrima as defined by wikipedia - "Eskrima" or "Escrima" refers to a class of Filipino Martial Arts that emphasize stick and sword fighting. The term and the art most probably originates from the Spanish word "esgrima" which is the term for fencing.
Its awesome!!!! A great arm workout...and whole body for that matter.

Then did my testing to start P90X...passed all the ideals to start other than pull ups
