  1. So I was in Whole Foods the other day thinking I was going to get some lamb and some grass fed beef, some unsweetened shredded coconut, and some almond butter. The grass fed beef was $39.99 a pound! Are you kidding me! The lamb was expensive too. What do you guys think about ordering meat online? I've never done it and have no clue how they would even ship meat. Are there reputable vendors or websites so I can research this? Don't know if it would be more expensive or cheaper to order online.

Oh and I didn't get the unsweetened shredded coconut either because I couldn't find it and the almond butter was $18.99 for a small jar. $18.99!! I'm still floored by these prices.

I have purchased from a local ranch in Fort Worth (I live here).

Really, REALLY good stuff and priced about right. I was just there last weekend and the owners are really good people. Luckily, I live close enough where they'll deliver it for $5 directly to my door.

    First Post!

Check out http://www.eatwild.com for a local spot. Here in the Northeast, Wegmans has just started carrying grass fed beef from Argentina. Not so local but they do make a good point about the fact that a cow in the northeast would need to feast on a lot of hay during winter. It doesn't taste as "gamey" as the beef we picked up from a local farm.

I was looking for unsweetened shredded coconut at my WF the other day and couldn't find it either! I discovered they hide it with the baking supplies.

I've ordered from them many times. No problems, the meat's been fine. I love their beef jerky.

I'm going to try to find a local source (northern NJ) for grassfed this Saturday.

I buy my grass fed beef from either Sprouts or Sunflower Markets. They usually have really decent prices and have sales on it often.

  9. That is some ridiculous pricing!!! How do they even have customers?!?!?!

Anyways, I get mine from a local farm. You may find a source of eatlocal.org or the weston a price website.

I feel your pain about the beef, I'm still mulling over how much to buy. I'm going to order from US Wellness Meats but when I do, I'll make it worth it.

As for the coconut, my WF has it in the bulk section and they actually price it by the pound!! I bought probably 3 liters by volume and it cost me about $1.50 cause it weighs nothing.

Also, usually WF has their own fresh ground nut butter and it's not more than 7.99/lb, just a little over the typical nut price around here. The fresh ground stuff is much tastier anyway (though that's a dangerous thing).

  11. Thanks guys. I found the shredded coconut in the bulk section and I did find some unsweetened almond butter for $6.99. They were completely out when I checked the first time.

I'm going to order meat from US Wellness also. I still have some steaks, pork chops, and ground beef to eat up first. Will probably order in a couple weeks.

eatwild.com is a really good resource too, they have a lot of local resources for grass fed meat! I'm glad you found the coconut, I had to search for it at WF too until I finally looked in the bulk section.

Also, if you have a food processor it's even cheaper to make your own nut butter! If you can find a good price on nuts (for instance, $3ish per pound for almonds at Costco!) you can spend significantly less. I like to roast my almonds, then add a couple of tablespoons of oil and some salt...and a bit of honey. You don't NEED the honey, but it sure is delicious :)

Ted Slanker has a great site. Very well-priced, and the more you buy, the cheaper it is to ship. I usually buy in bulk (actually you have to buy at least 15 lbs.) His site is:

I also buy from Grazin' Angus farm based in upstate NY. They come down to Manhattand and brooklyn for local greenmarkets. However, I think they do ship across the country. Dan, his wife Ilene and their kids are very cool people. Here is their site:

I've ordered from US Wellness Meats before and have been happy with the service and meat quality, though they're still kinda pricey. Be sure to follow them on Twitter, as they sometimes offer special discounts for Twitter followers.

We ended up buying a 1/4 cow from a local farm and a freezer to store it in, which works out to about $4.50/lb minus the cost of the freezer. But I still order butter and tallow from USWM.

And yeah, Whole Foods' price on almond butter is insane. Do you have Trader Joe's in your area? Much cheaper almond butter, and every bit as good as what they sell at WF.

A second vote for Slanker's. There is a break on shipping at about 60 pounds or so...which really isn't that much meat, so get a variety.

The Costco where I shop has big jars of unsweetened almond butter for $6. You might look there if you have a membership.

I'm late to the thread, but I've experienced something similar shopping at upscale stores...my girlfriend calls Whole Foods, "Whole Paycheck". haha. I guess that's why.

On a side note, and again I know I'm late to the thread, but if you're still looking for cheap nut butter, and you don't mind ponying up the initial cost for a vitamix blender (www.vitamix.com), that thing turns at about 240 mph on "high" and makes almond flour for me in about 5 seconds, and almond butter in about 20sec. Best blender I've ever owned. All I have to do is find a deal on almonds and the butter is mine for the taking.

  19. If you're around the Western Washington (Seattle area)

    PCC is awesome

    http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/

They have grass fed beef, free range pork, etc.

And the grass fed beef goes for as low as 6.99 a pound.

    Pretty awesome.

I don't shop at Whole Foods much, if at all. It's way too $$$ for what you get.
