What do you use as shampoo?

I was just curious to know whether people here have a less chemical laden method of washing hair. Regular store brought stuff tend to be full of unpronounceable words. Does anyone use their own concoctions? A brand that's friendly to mother nature?

Oh, I have always wanted to try soapnuts. Someone on this site pointed out this webpage that had lots of good, pure products (many are 1 ingredient):

I've been experimenting, and for the past year I've been using a mild soap (shower gel) in my hair a couple times a week. I also use conditioner regularly.

I have tried baking powder and vinegar and stuff, and it was too messy and too much of a hassle. Also, I didn't like smelling like fish and chips until my head dried.

I like sweet smelling stuff that is easy to apply better.

I'm not so much into the hippy thing (no offense), it just seemed to me that it would be possible to have healthy, beautiful hair without shelling out so much for chemicals.

Eating fat has done much more for my hair than anything else, so far.

I don't really wash my hair that much anyway. I get really bad eczema so tend to avoid soaps.

I can imagine that one would probably get over mixing the baking soda and water up... I might try it to see if I can train myself to just not use shampoo. And think of the money I'd save! I get really sweaty though, enough for my hair to drip as if I'd just dunk my hair in water, so not sure if I want to smell as if I don't shampoo my hair..

I probably won't use the conditioning step, I'd much rather try an oil of some sort. In fact, I remember my mum doing stuff like that to me... I think once she tried olive oil... another time beer... that memory still makes me laugh.

But in the end, I am rather lazy and would probably just buy something pricy but with less chemicals. Must going shopping this weekend. =D

IMHO, it's much more important what you eat, than what you put on your hair.

I work out and get amazingly sweaty, three or four times per week. If I didn't use shampoo, I would feel skanky and gross (I have long hair).

So I shampoo with Fructis, then use Coconut Oil on the ends. It works great, and smells terrific.

wug, the problem with doing the baking soda without finishing off with vinegar is that it's REALLY hard to rinse it all out. The vinegar seems to help get every little bit out of your hair (see the bit about the chemical reaction), and for some reason vinegar seems to smooth the hair down and make it shiny.

That said, I still think it's too much hassle :)

I use Burt's Bees Super Shiny grapefruit and honey conditioner. It's the only thing that makes it really nice, and I even dye it black every few months. I rarely brush my hair, even when it was long, and this stuff is good for me and the environment. So yay! I do want to try this stuff, though: http://www.mehandi.com/shop/shampoo/index.html I can't help it, even when I know what I like and what works, I still buy tons of soap and stuff!

I just started using solid shampoo from Lush. It has some chemicals but most of the ingredients are natural. They list the ingredients on their website. The shampoo is a small disc and it's supposed to last as long as three bottles. I love the way it makes my hair feel and smell plus it's great for traveling and carry-on bags.

  11. I *heart* LUSH solid shampoos and use them everyday. I use their conditioner, too, but only 2x per week because it's so concentrated. Other than that, I do a 1x per week Dabur oil treatment on my hair to keep healthy shine.

I have extremely thick, long hair. If I don't wash it daily, it can get pretty greasy looking.

I wash my long hair once a week. Most weeks I use baking soda with a white vinegar rinse. About once a month, I use eggs instead of baking soda, which helps to reduce the waxy sebum build-up without stripping everything down.

This works really well for me.

I use Nature's Gate shampoo and conditioner (volumizing and/or moisturizing) and wash my hair every other day. http://www.natures-gate.com/

Have been meaning to try the baking soda/vinegar method.

I use shampoo, Baby shampoo or Aussi. I tried soap nuts 2 months ago but felt it didn't remove the grease from my hair (I oil it before washing). The links in the following thread discuss primal shampoos:

My sister tried soapnuts and they smelt so bad- like vomit! Really. The smell was even bad after adding some essential oils to try to mask it. Yuck!

I'll NEVER use anything else!!! Very cheap also!!!

  20. I use Aveda. I also like Burt's Bees.

  21. Here's a great site that tells you what hazards are associated with tons of different cosmetics (which includes shampoo, deoderant, soap, etc.): http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

  22. I too, use no poo. Apple cider vinegar, occasionally a baking soda coconut oil paste for scrubbing. I also have dreadlocks so it's gentler on my precious knots as well.

I use soapnuts to wash my clothes and dr bronners tea tree oil soap for dishes and everything else.

@mrd, it's probably BECAUSE you're washing your hair everyday that it's getting greasy. Washing everyday strips your hair and skin of it's natural oils. Then your body has a reaction, "Oh! Not enough oil! PRODUCE MORE!" Then you say it's too greasy so you wash it again, thus setting up the cycle. Try going a while without washing then set up a new cycle with a milder shampoo bar (yeah, I checked out lush and the first ingredient was SLS, not something I'd put on my skin, as it's a very drying agent).

  23. I make my own shampoo bars & wash my hair about once a week in the winter; more in the summer.

I don't understand all the hatin' on no-poo. I don't find it to be a hassle at all, and the vinegar smell dissipates after you step out of the shower. (For the best results, you shouldn't even be rinsing the vinegar out at all!)

My hair used to get really oily if I didn't wash it everyday, and now I can go 2-3 days without washing and it looks fine. I only need to use the baking soda every other day, and I use the vinegar rinse every day.

It's seriously the best thing that has ever happened to my hair...my hair is stronger and shinier, and I'm saving money to boot. Don't knock it til you try it!

Hey, baking soda makes your hair very brittle. I used it for a while..

  27. P_P... whoa now...I workout most every day, usually 5x per week which is why I wash my hair daily. I suppose I could skip that, but BO isn't something I want to rock on a daily basis. I don't have issues with hair damage or shine. I have extremely thick hair. If I leave it for several days, which I have while camping, it becomes so shiny and heavy it's difficult to style. Maybe grease is not the right word? Because beauticians complement the health of my hair all the time. Some people do have hair and scalp that is, by ethnicity, naturally oilier than others.

SLS or no, the Lush bar has been the best I've found so far that's dimethicone-free that clarifies without drying. My second favorite, a biotin-based SLS-free shampoo is a little too heavy (moisturizing) for daily use.

Other than that, my skin is pretty fantastic as long as I'm eating a healthy dose of daily fat. I don't have to wear much makeup these days. Just a bit of concealer to cover two scars under my eyes and a bit of foundation to even out some redness in my cheeks. My makeup isn't the natural stuff. The mineral foundations I've tried are basically a waste of money. Viva la Smashbox.

I'm a girl and like beauty products. So sue me.

    @Eva:

    I follow these instructions: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Go-No-Poo/

My only tweak is that I don't do a final water rinse, I leave the vinegar rinse in my hair.

Thanks for the link Milo. Do you know if baking soda will remove the coconut oil grease from my hair? I usually oil it before washing.

    Posted 2 weeks ago #
  30. I try to go 'natural' when possible, but I am so busy that even cooking 'primally' is tough. I just use whatever gives my flat hair volume.

I do love the the coconut oil 'hot-oil' treatment, but I've never had a problem 'washing' it out of my hair....
