One of the most puzzling things about dieting for weight loss is how some days it's very difficult, if not almost impossible, to stop eating.

That's one of the reasons I came up with my VHP diet, for the satiation of protein. It's been a big improvement, but sometimes after 9PM it's still been willpower vs. habit/hunger.

Today I started out with an egg, egg whites, some of my homemade cheese, a few ounces of lean ham. About 450 calories. The hours went by...and went by...and went by. I had a few inconsequential nibbles of jerky or cracklings. About 4PM I made a "Big Ass" salad which included 3.5 oz of nonfat mozzarella cheese.

It's 8PM and I'm not mentally searching the fridge. I've had about 950 calories, which is less than my allotment for the day by 4PM. And due to the thermal effect of protein, only about 800 net in reality!

What gives? Anyone else find such fluctuations in hunger and satiation?

    I'm certainly not complaining!

  2. Odd. I had a day like that, too -- my first ever!

All morning...not hungry. Had a few, mixed nuts (maybe half an ounce) before heading into an important meeting, just in case...needed my wits about me...but still not hungry.

Finally had breakfast at 11:45. Spinach salad with an apple, pecans, walnuts, canned salmon, and olive oil & lemon juice.

Got home around 4pm and did 3 miles of escalating quarters, followed by a few hill sprints. Did the farm chores. It's now 6:30 and I'm STILL not hungry.

This is SO not normal for me, especially since yesterday was a heavy-lifting day. But I'm not complaining, either!

I wish I could resist the urge to eat when I'm not hungry... cooking is fun!

  4. I'm cooking anyway, Raph! (Figure I GOTTA get hungry sometime tonight...right???)

I have a tasty beef & sausage chili (no beans) simmering on the stove as we speak. :)

  6. OTB, i'm gonna have to fire up my own high protein experiment. You've encouraged me. I am ultra low carb if not zero on a day to day basis, and along the lines of 75% fat. But I can chow down the fat! I don't get utterly satiated, but pretty darn close. If high protein is that much better, well, I just need to see for myself for a little change up. Still keeping carbs well under 10%

Barbeygirl, what is your no bean chili recipe?

  9. Recipe? What's that? ;)

I browned 1 lb ground beef and 1/3 lb hot pork sausage with 1 yellow onion, 1 jalapeno (with seeds), 1 pasilla, 1/2 red bell pepper and 1/2 yellow bell pepper, and a few mushrooms. Then, I added a bit more than 2 Tbs each oregano, cumin, and chili powder and sauteed for a couple minutes to toast the spices. Finally, I added 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes, 1 6-oz can tomato paste, 2 cups water, about 20 chopped black olives, and salt to taste.

    Yummy!

    Maybe "It's going around, BG."

Acmebike, I'm not going to claim that my VHP diet did it. I think it was just a fluke, just something in the variables of human experience. The (rarer) opposite of "I can't stop eating!"

I hit a new low weight this AM, hubba hubba!

I have made a macronutrient data spreadsheet of the highest protein foods, at least the ones that I use. I'll put the protein only results up on a new post today.

Second day of the same phenomena.

I wonder if, after eating VHP for four or five days, the ole body does this not hungry thing.

Either that, or two days are a fluke.

  12. I'm not sure if it is VHP. I had the same thing happen to me a short time into starting my Primal journey. Still not 100% yet, but moving steadily towards it.

Every so often, I will go the entire day just not hungry and will sometimes IF the day with a shrug and next day not pig out, just eat normal. Other times, I will get hungry 4 times a day.

I have noticed much the same, OTB. On days with little carb and higher protein, I'm not really all that hungry.

  14. You know, OTB, that may be the answer in my experience as well. My protein has been higher over the past week, and I too have now had 3 low-hunger days in a row. Cool...but as I'm very active and not trying to lose weight, I need to be sure I eat enough!

Take the feet out of the socks, first.

this article seems to support your theory that fat is not satiating.

    That's fascinating!

I'm definitely upping the VOO in place of butter where I can.

    Sir Grandma,

The study shows that even in the high fat (sat and mono) groups, they were eating a high carb (46%) as well. Those results may not apply to many here as most people here eat a lower carb %.

Insulin resistance from excessive palmitic acid is an adaptive mechanism that was recently discussed by both Stephen and Peter over at Hyperlipid. When most of your calories are coming from sat fat (palmitic) with little carbs, insulin resistance is enabled so all the remaining glucose will be reserved for your brain. This is temporary and not similar to type II diabetes.

This is a fine system by itself. But, long term problems could arise if one is eating a high sat fat with high carbs (rats in study, typical "junk food") as there would be insulin resistance and excess glucose in the blood stream..

Personally, I feel the least hungry when most of my calories come for sat fats (butter, cream). Coconut oil (MCT) is supposed to be insulinotropic, but I have done OK with them. There are some anecdotes about people having relatively (for low carb/primal folks) high triglycerides with MCT however.

And OTB, even though you are eating mostly protein, the majority of your energy is still coming from animal fats (your own). Your experience goes against what the article claimed about fatty acids in the blood causing hunger as you are very likely in a calorie deficit right now but not hungry. If you added some carbs, you might be more hungry with more insulin being released; which is paradoxical since you would be adding calories.

I prefer milk fats since they are lowest in PUFA. But EVOO is also fairly low in PUFA. You should do an n = 1 experiment where you spent some time eating mainly Sats and another where you eat mainly EVOO to see which one works out better for you.
