Update - New Forum/Photo Instructions
(33 posts) (16 voices)-
At the request of a few forum users I've added a new forum - Primal Blueprint Odds and Ends:
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/forum/primal-blueprint-odds-and-ends
Some forum users were finding that some of their questions and comments didn't exactly fit into any of the existing forums. This new forum will be for "everything else".
Also, I've moved the "How to Insert Photos into You Comment" instructions into this new forum.
If you have any ideas on how to improve the forum list them here and I'll see what I can do. Thanks, everyone, and Grok on!

Another question: Would having sub-forums be at all helpful?
I could install sub-forums for Primal Blueprint Fitness and Primal Blueprint Nutrition, for example. Something like:
Primal Blueprint Fitness
- Sprint
- Lift Heavy Things
- Low Level AerobicPrimal Blueprint Nutrition
- Carbs
- Fat
- ProteinThoughts?

Subforums is a great idea Mark. Also, I was wondering if you could provide an option for contacting or sending messages to the posters directly w/o having to reply to a thread.

PB Recipes:
Meat- for meat and fish recipes.
Veg- for good veg recipes.
Cheats- all this coconut milk ice cream and primal desserts and such!
Sources- grassfed beef, CO, EVOO, etc...
Other- well, other!Posted 4 months ago # -
I think subforums is a great idea. The only "problem" with the forum on the site is that it is so popular and active, a thread can disappear in less than 24 hours. Thanks, Mark, for the ongoing efforts to make everything work well for folks.

Mark, Would add a section for research articles and scientific studies? The members post a lot of interesting and informational studies but they are usually hidden in the threads. Having a separate section would make searching easier.

Mark, would it be possible to add pagination to the forum, so we can browse the older posts? Most of the time, anything older than 12 hours is gone, even under the specific sections.

I still think this forum style is really hard to navigate and keep up with and that a more traditional forum like vBulletin would be a better solution.
Easy access to forums, subforums, private messages, profiles and signatures, pagination, and everything is easy to find and makes sense. You can also have your "user control panel" which will only show you the updated threads you're subscribed to, and "new posts" which will show the ones that are new since your last login. Very helpful and time-saving.
This type of forum (is it WP-forum?) is good for a smaller less active group, but I think your community has outgrown it, Mark.

agreed. There's got to be a vBulletin plugin/migration tool for WP. I would say that vBulletin is the only way to go on a PHP box.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Also, vBulletin also has WAY better search capabilities. Much easier to find the info that's already out there...

big fan of vBulletin here!!! Implemented it once and bob was my uncle.

Have to agree that the search thingy on here doesn't work for me - only a problem now you're far too busy and popular!
Posted 4 months ago # -
Mark, where are you?
Posted 4 months ago # -
Sorry for the delayed response. Very busy lately with book promo...
I'll see about a more robust forum in the future and I'll keep vBulletin in mind.
Forum search takes a little getting use to but I think it works pretty well once you have the hang of it, no?
As soon as it get some time freed up I'll give some more thought to sub-forums, too. Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

"Forum search takes a little getting use to but I think it works pretty well once you have the hang of it, no?"
No... I'm on your forum as much as anyone else, and try to use your search function pretty often, but it's not something that works well. Period. Sorry.
I'm glad you'll consider vBulletin or similar bulletin board type things... they really are much smoother from a user's standpoint than what you've got going on here, subforums or not.
Thanks for replying and letting us know you're on it! :)

maba - Pagination has been added to the Latest Discussion as requested. Cheers!

Thank you! Yay for multiple pages!
Another vote for vBulletin. Being able to go instantly to the new posts in a thread instead of scrolling down to find to find where you left off every time would be such an improvement. I have been a heavy user of two vBulletin forums, and they work very well indeed.

Thanks for the vBulletin suggestions, everyone. I'm looking into it to see how tricky the transition will be. I'll see what I can do.

Thank you Mark!

Mark - following on from the recent posts, I think it would be a good idea to have a "Here comes the science bit" subsection - so we that have the inclination can pull apart cellular metabolism (so to speak!), without the implication that you *need* to know, understand, or even care about those details to benefit from the PB itself.
As an aside, it's great that you're taking and responding to feedback! :)

Mark how about implementing the option to hide all the posts of a given user?
Something like an "ignore" button.
Posted 3 months ago # -
SerialSinner,
Do you have someone in particular in mind? I've been receiving emails about one user in particular. If there is forum consensus of a troll in our midst I can email the user and/or delete/block him/her from the forum. Shoot me a private email and let me know.
Also, I'll see if that feature can be worked into a future iteration of this forum. Thanks, SS.

It is probably best if you delete me mark. I am sorry I caused so much trouble here. Obviously I am not getting along with the crowd. Thanks for the nutritional info though.

Why would you want to ban somebody? Are you guys so sensitive that you can't have your views challenged??? Nobody needs to be banned. Bobbylight hasn't offended anyone, he's just skeptical about what some of us believe in. I welcome that.

Mark, thanks for stepping in. I second Raphael on that it makes o sense to ban people regardless of their conduct. Trolls can always start a new account and come back anyway.
Trolls seem to be fueled by attention, so adding a feature that allows members to hide all the posts of a given individual seems ideal.

Not to play the contrarian, but there could someday be a case where banning a member is necessary. I'd very much hope we never have to deal with it here, but posts involving threats of physical violence, "cyber-stalking," fraud, or solicitation for illegal conduct (among others - I'd rather not speculate) SHOULD result in a member being banned even if (as SS points out) they might ultimately return. Those cases, should one ever arise, should be very clear cut.
That said, I haven't seen anyone post anything here that comes close to what I'd consider worthy of a ban. I think SS's suggestion of an "ignore" button or Dixonge's of a badge system would help. I also agree with SS's point of troll's being "fueled by attention." I won't "enable" anyone's Internet fixation, so ignoring as SS suggests seems to be the proper action here.
Mark, it's your site, but, respectfully, I'm also very uncomfortable with your idea of banning a member based on a "forum consensus." As you pointed out, free and open exchange of ideas is essential to the growth of PB. Adopting the "Survivor" model for deciding who is allowed to post in the forum could be stifling.
To wrap up a long post (sorry), I'd recommend setting forth a written set of "Terms of Use" for the forum to which all members must agree. (Sorry if one already exists, but I couldn't find one on the site.) A simple document setting forth the standards expected of members - which would embody the standards I outlined above and whatever else you think is appropriate. Doing so would allow you to avoid the dilemma of you either having to make a tough call on each case where someone ruffles people's feathers or putting it up to a community vote. Are terms of use in place already? If so, where could I refer to them.

Well from now on I will refrain from writing anything that I believe will start a debate...or starting a debate myself. I obviously have different views from many of the people here, and if I think that I could help someone out or give someone advice on the site I will do that, but I will try not to debate as that is obviously looked down on in this forum.

I've seen the mention of an 'ignore' button in reference to many posts by bobbylight specifically. I wonder why, as members of this forum, we can't just actually really *ignore* posts that we don't feel are helpful/useful to us?? I totally understand trying to make sure accurate info is being posted on the forums re: PB info, but I've read many negative posts about bobbylight in response to things he's written, that are not at all trying to clarify PB info, but more just expressing annoyance at this member's posting. I guess I'm just saying if a member's posts are annoying to some of us, maybe we can just not read the threads they start or the comments they make? Is an actual 'ignore' button really necessary?
Just my $.02! (I am a very new member to this forum, and it has been quite easy for me to figure out which posters seem like more seasoned PB-ers, and which posters are more on the fence/newbies/even skeptical of PB...so I personally haven't felt confused or easily led to another way of thinking/eating by *anyone's* posts if that is a concern...The MDA site is such a solid foundation of info that newbies questioning things posted in the forum may be able to get any confusion cleared up by revisiting the PB 101...)
