Sweets...

Hey guys,
I've been eating pretty well for awhile now. Lately I have gotten into the habit of eating a large salad with pickles, tomatoes, peppers, all sorts of leafy veggies, and a bit of cheese sprinkled on top (the kind you buy in a bag. Has a bit of corn starch in it, etc. My parents make the food. They are fully aware of all of this but are not all the way in like you guys are).
This, along with freshly prepared fish (sometimes salmon, sometimes something else) or some other meat. The products are high quality, no chemicals and hormones or antibiotics, and organic where possible.
I do eat a fruit smoothie made from mixing a banana, strawberries, mango, and orange (or any similar combination of fruits) almost every day in addition to maybe an apple or two as snacks. And at school I have cold cuts and cheese instead of cafeteria food. I eat lots of wal-nuts. I'm 16.
Anyways, big problem. Parents were in New York and managed to get to a Russian store. Because this is like the only opportunity they have had to buy Russian foods in literally years, they bought up over 400 dollars of stuff. We are from Ukraine.
Stuff includes, besides high quality meats, cavier (the really expensive one), etc. a high quality cake that my Mom says she hasn't had in like 20 years. Candy, "nuts"-dough wrapped nut-shaped little goodies with a thick yummy substance in the middle made from milk and something else (can't remember the name). Also a few other things whose name I can't recall. One in particular is this thing made from egg whites, a bit of sugar, and coated in chocolate.
Anyways, all of this stuff is not American, meaning there is way less sugar, and none of it is processed. No preservatives, nothing. The cake crust layers are made from eggs and nuts, which is not something you will ever find an American company make. All of this stuff is still cakes, candy, and the like, but the ingredients are top-quality with no processed junk.
I have not had any of these foods in years too, and there is no telling when there will be a chance to get such delicacies. So, I am at a moral dilemma. Do I eat this stuff for the next week because it's not going to last forever like the processed, preservative-containing American sweets, or do I skip on it and let it go to waste?
I already ate some of this cake, and some of those "nuts" and it tastes amazing. Did I mention my parents got Amish milk? Milk derived from grass-fed cows. The combination of these foods takes so much willpower to resist.

I would say if this is something you really enjoy and only get about once a year, go ahead and enjoy it.
I'll be traveling abroad this winter and have no intention of letting my primal lifestyle impede my experiences of South American culture and cuisine.
So that's my take on it. Just be really strict next week.Posted 4 months ago # -
Got it. Thanks!

I know the Ukrainian food you're talking about and it is amazing. Have some, and enjoy it. Then go back to primal.

Go for it. Just enjoy the threat and then go back to eating primal. A month ago I had a piece of apricot jam cake my mother made and I couldn't really disappoint her by not even tasting it. I had a small piece and had no problem sticking to primal foods the next meal.
And the cake didn't even spike my blood sugar (I'm hypoglycemic and I check with a glucometer) and this suggests to me that when you eat healthy even unhealthy food doesn't have the unhealthy effect it would have if your diet sucked.

oh, the "nuts" you are talking about. My grandmother used to make them for special treats like for birthdays. and the inside is pure condensed milk, nothing else. (im originally from estonia)

Go for it!
I'm reminded of a woman on another forum who gave up A FREE TRIP TO PARIS with a friend because she was worried about blowing her diet.
It's not an every day thing...balance.

She obviously hadn't read about the French Paradox!!!

Eva, that's the one. Condensed milk. I couldn't remember the name, thanks.
My parents tell me that even though these are cakes and sugary things, the ingredients used and the lower levels of sugar aren't going to be nearly as harmful as an American cake with the artificial glaze and sky-high levels of sugar. I was at a birthday party several weeks ago and tried some of the cake. My teeth were literally tingling when I put it into my mouth from the amount of sugar.

PillowFire, all great advice above. What is the name of this cake you talk about? There are a couple of Ukranian stores where I live and it sounds like a good alternative for desserts when I'm entertaining friends.

It's called the Primal Blueprint. Not the Primal Diet.
Diet is only a portion of the blueprint.
Eating things like these on occasion is not falling off the wagon, it is about enjoying the ride!
Stressing over this kind of stuff will do more harm than enjoying a once in a while treat and then moving on.
Enjoy!

The cake is called kievsky cake. There is essentially no grains in it since the layers are made from walnuts. Plenty of butter, eggs, milk, sugar.
