  1. OK, I really love going Primal, but I am feeling some side-effects lately.

    1. I am stinky now. I'm not sure what it is, but I've never been a BO person. I promise. My parents and I have always been very low on the 'smelly' factor. Unless I don't shower for 3 days, I just (usually) don't smell. NOW, I am 'pitty' a lot. I mean, if I skip on the shower for the morning, I am suffering from my own smell by mid-day! This was a HUGE rarity for me.

    2. Mouth Ulcers/ Canker sores. For the past couple of weeks, along with my 'stench', I have had canker sores. One after another, day after day. I read that this could be a deficiency in vit B12?

I have one other 'thing' but this is too public of a place for discussion.

Anyway, just looking for some clues. Anyone else had these type of things crop up lately? I am thinking that I have some deficiencies and it must be from my eating that I am lacking nutrients.

I think I am going to do a toxicity fast with some distilled water and spinach and then incorporate more vegetables into my day, whereas I was mostly meat and fat with some veggies here and there (maybe).

    What do you think?

I noticed dandruff in my hair last week, it made me feel really yucky. But this week has been ok. As little kids, if we had moth ulcers anytime, we'd be given B complex pills. I also remember my dad applying some kind of rhubarb extract on my sores and that it gave immediate relief. Is the smell that you talk about the kind associated w/ ketosis?

    What is a toxicity fast?

  3. Yeah, I am thinking of going back to my liquid vitamin, which is rich in Vit B complexes. I stopped taking it months ago since it had 9g of carbs and I was trying to go below 30, if not zero carbs, for weight-loss. Now, my weight has been creeping back and I have been feeling 'off'. Time to rethink my nutrition and get back to IF for my fat loss.

I don't think the 'smell' is from Ketosis. I've been a little naughty with my food lately (beer & nachos last weekend and weeknights have been a beer and maybe some Greek Yogurt and then a banana with almond butter), so maybe most of my 'naughty treats' have been somewhat healthy/ primal, they are still high enough in carbs for me to NOT be in Ketosis lately.

Sassa.. how old are you again?

It might be not related to the primal diet, but rather-- hormonal changes.

I had the same thing happen to me before when my hormones started fluctuating a lot.. in my late 30s. Don't know if that could be it, but I do recall that I was rather surprised and kinda shocked at myself :o

I always associated canker sores with a general lack of fresh fruits and vegetables. Used to get them all the time; haven't had one for several years now, ever since I started focusing on eating them more.

I know lots of folks here think that fruits and vegetables are not a necessary part of our diet, but I disagree. There are thousands of compounds in them, and we have no idea what their function is in our bodies.

I get sores in my mouth if I eat a lot of tomatoes, citrus, or strawberries. I think it has something to do with the acid. But, I'm not really eating a whole lot of that now, so.

I've been at this now for 2 months and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

As for the BO, I've heard that showering at night, putting deodorant on after drying off, then going to bed, then putting another layer of deodorant on in the morning is the way to go. I know Grok didn't have deodorant. Poor Mrs. Grok.

    lol JamieBelle!!!

My sister is definitely WAY pittier than me, and she started putting black tea bags under her pits for 15-20 min before bed. She did it for 2 weeks, and has had much less BO and sweating. I think she called it pit detox!

  8. Aha! I've been sweating a lot more than normal since going Primak. My gym trainer commented on it last week when I had my session with him- he said it was a good thing? But I haven't really gone down the BO route, as far as I can tell.

  10. OK, I figured it out. No more stinky pits.

Yes, regarding the veggies, I do agree that I need to incorporate more. The B vitamins and veggies have helped the canker sores.

As for my stinky pits, I absolutely refuse to comment on the 'trigger' It's extremely embarrassing. But, I am very happy to be back on the track to good health!

    Thanks Ladies!

Glad you decided to stop using the garlic scented deodorant :D

    TELL!

    Posted 4 months ago #
  14. I really can't. It's kind of a WAY TMI thing. I've only told one other woman in this world after it happened 7 years ago. Even then, I think I wished I hadn't said anything.

It's just one of those things you don't tell someone, especially in an open forum! Ack! ;-)

Sorry, maybe in another lifetime, but discussing it with my husband was a stretch enough! Uggghhhh...

SassaFrass88 - Coming in a little late here, but it could well be deficiencies. Have you been eating organs & bones (broth) during your carnivore phase?
If you go super-low-carb for longer periods I think it's important to make sure you're getting the entire gamut of vitamins from the various meat parts. So, vitamin B & C in organ meats, calcium in bone broth. Liver is especially important for B vitamins (should really be eaten weekly), heart for certain minerals etc. Ideally some cuts should be eaten raw, too. Without the organs & broth I do think there's deficiencies. If you really like the carnivore thing the book "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon goes thro' prep of bone broth, organs and various fermented foods.

Or...just up the fruits & veggies....

For the last three winters I unexpectedly reeked of maple syrup. Not just a light scent, I mean if you walked into my bedroom it would smack you in the face maple syrup aroma. My doctors couldn't explain it and they ran a bunch of tests.

Sometimes weird smells just happen, glad you got yours dealt with. As for me, anywhere I went people (random people I don't know or wasn't even talking to) would comment loudly to themselves "Man, I could really go for some pancakes right now, I don't even know why!"

Seems to only be a winter thing, so I'm hoping for no encores this winter.

CaveGirl: That's hilarious. So you were responsible for people indulging in non-primal foods. Hey better maple syrup than garlic or onion.

Nina: I recently got NT from Amazon and I think it's a fascinating read. Just yesterday, my mum made a batch of Indian-style mutton bone broth and I told myself I was going to make it often. And the bones are dirt cheap to boot. I could throw in a few days of no-meat, bone broth-only into the mix. What organs/cuts do you recommend eating raw? I know WAPF recommends feeding babies with raw grated liver.

To this day, my bf calls me Mrs. Buttersworth. Trust me, after a while when you are trying to sleep and all you smell is sweet sweet maple syrup it gets a little old, lol.

I get sores in the corners of my mouth. I used to get them when I was little. They reappeared when I first went primal last year. I know they are exacerbated by acid foods, like citrus, tomatoes, etc, but I don't think they are caused by their consumption. I've read that it is possibly a candida problem, or might be a fungal thing. Sounds gross, but yeast and fungus live on your skin, sometimes things get out of control.

The other thing I developed suddenly was seb derm on my forehead and hairline. That disappeared once I regularly started using anti-fungal and hydrocortisone on it. Still waiting for the appointment with a dermatologist.

I'm suspecting hormonal fluctuations, since there were some changes in my cycle. But I am on the same BC I've been on for 6+ years, and thought that this prevents hormonal fluctuations. I imagine diet influences hormones, anyone have a good primal-oriented reference for this?

    Thanks!

@maba - yeah, I really enjoyed the NT book. We made our 1st bone-broth a few weeks back. It was lovely! We're still experimenting w/ the organ thing...and haven't (yet) done any raw stuff, but I'm working on it. In the meantime we're experimenting with grass-fed freeze-dried organ supplements from Dr.Ron's (http://www.drrons.com/organ-delight-traditional-superfood.htm). I know we don't eat enough organ, so I wanted to try it out for a while until I could work out some recipe's that would get more organ into our daily foods (I DO love liverpate, so I know that'll be one way).

If I eat food I'm intolerant to I get BO. I think I know what your personal problem is, and my food allergies cause that sometimes, too. I get canker sores when I eat gluten.

How long have you been primal for? You could be detoxing and having candida die off which would definitely cause these things.

CaveGirl - Did the doctors check to see if you were processing BCAA amino acids properly? There is a genetic disorder called Maple Syrup Urine Disease which usually affects infants where they are lacking an enzyme that breaks down specific amino acids in proteins. Apparently very high protein diets can produce the same smell. Perhaps you are just not metabolizing all of your protein intake correctly?

    Posted 4 months ago #
  27. @ibd we actually used a maple syrup diet food for rodents to check their BCAA levels in the diabetic rats. i thought it was a fluke (the smell at first) but now it makes sense!
