Seasonal Weight Gain/Loss
(10 posts) (6 voices)-
Very recently someone here suggested that a difficulty to lose weight in the fall might be true for humans as well as many animals.
Well, here it is: "This might explain the annual patterns of weight fluctuation in humans as well. We tend to be heavier in fall and winter and lighter in the spring and summer, which are commonly attributed to increased physical activity supposedly accompanying the coming of bathing-suit season. When researchers have measured seasonal variations in insulin levels in humans, they have invariably reported that insulin is highest in late fall and early winter (twice as high in a 1984 study) and lowest in late spring and early summer.
Moreover, as the University of Colorado’s Robert Eckel has reported, lipoprotein-lipase activity in fat tissue elevates in late fall and decreases in spring and summer; its activity in skeletal muscle follows an opposite pattern. This would stimulate weight loss in the spring and weight gain in the fall, whether we consciously desire either or not, and would certainly make it easier to lose weight in the spring and gain it in the fall."

This is the "short" review of GCBC; it still take four or six hours to go through. I presume GCBC has the citations.
Oh well,pudgy until March, I guess...... :)

Haha NOOOOOO!!! I don't wanna be squishy til spring! That would explain the many cries of not being able to get up to work out though...it's just our genes trying to get us to gain fat to stay warm regardless of our temperature controlled houses, cars, and workplaces :)

What triggers it? Is it the sun? Vit D can help? Move to Austrailia? Any thoughts?

I was diagnosed as having SAD when I lived in Seattle. The docs suggested a special lamp to sit under x hours per week, but I decided instead to go hang in a tanning booth once or twice each week. Worked like a charm!

OTOH, hanna, you now have perfect justification for not attaining goals!
I have already mentally moved my New Year's goal of 200 pounds back a few months. What a de-stressor!
August is back with a vengeance here on the bayou. Nintey two, three degrees, but at least with shorter days. In ten days or a bit more, the temps should drop. I have the old mountain bike aired up just waiting..... ("No honey, we will NOT be doing Monarch Pass, just putzing on the Gulf of Mexico. You heard me.....")

kuno, had some experience with this via ex-gf in Denver. I would look for those old fashioned tanning lamps at the Goodwill stores, they worked great. But that was 15 years ago and I've not seen one in ages.
There is good evidence that SAD can be ameliorated with lots of Vitamin D.
Does that make sense or what? I just upped my intake fro 4K/day to 6K with the shorter season and less inclination of the sun.

OTB,
That totally makes sense. Since we've been having lots of sunny weather here in SF (and I've been unemployed), I've had lots of sun time. But I think I'll have to start taking Vit D myself. The fog is starting to take control now.
I'm a little smaller than you are-should I start with 4K/day?

Makes sense.
I was diagnosed with SAD when I lived in Portland- did the whole tanning bed thing also. I live in a sunny climate now but I always start feeling a little sluggish this time of year even though it's sunny.

It's probably due to diet changes with the availability of sugars in fruit and veg.
That would be a perfect environmental trigger for season regulation.
It would also explain why the SAD diet puts on fat all year around.
I have had no problems losing weight up to and including winter (by diet).

kuno, I'm no expert nor do I play one on TV.
Vitamind D intake via supplement seems to run on th basis of 2K/day minimum. Ten K/day is the possible upper limit w/o problems, although that's not absolute.
I've been taking 4K/day most of the summer plus a lot of Florida sunshine and now that the sun is in declination, I just upped it to 6K. It's not an expensive vitamin and until I get to at least twice that, no concerns about side effects.
Mi dos centavos!
