Sam's Club

Is there anything PB at Sam's? I always think of Sam's as the antithesis of health...everything is high in fat and mass produced. With PB I'm having to take a more open minded look at Whole Foods Market...is there a more PB perspective on Sam's Club?

Sams' is a Wal-Mart chain. I avoided them for years for political and labor policy reasons. Especially bad for women. Sadly, where I am now the only K-Mart is a tiny dump. I go to Wart-Mart protesting internally all the way. If I can buy what I want elsewhere, even at more cost, I do. Sam Walton at least was proud of his American made products. Before his body was cold, the bean counters took over and they were flying to China.

I saw a 3lb tub of almonds at Sam's for $10.

Nuts are super cheap. Produce is kind of low quality in general, but the asparagus and baby spinach are pretty good. If you can't buy farm eggs, buying Eggland's Best (not great, but better than standard) 18 packs is about $3 at Sam's, compared to $3 for a 12 pack or so at the grocery store.
They have decent prices on some supplements: fish oil, vitamin D, etc.
If you're going to be buying grocery store dairy products, then you may as well buy them for less at Sam's. $3 for a quart of heavy cream here. If your alternative is higher quality, maybe you want to do that. All the meat is CAFO, the fish are farmed in South America..of course, not any different from a normal grocery store. So it's a good deal over a grocery store, but if you have a good farmer's market or can order better meats, and money is not an issue, do that.

i don't go to sam's club [not even sure if we have them in canada??] but i do go to costco and find several items that i buy regularly and believe are high quality. the price is very good compared with grocery stores. i buy canned salmon, nuts, lara bars, prosciutto, parmesan cheese, olive oil, balsamic vinegar [the kirkland brand is delicious], produce, etc.

I get some of my produce there. You can buy huge tubs of ORGANIC mixed baby greens for like $3 where its double that in normal stores. I also buy giant bags of broccoli and avocados there. Sometimes they have organic raspberries and blueberries for cheap. I wonder what their meat section is like? I have never really looked but they do have a butcher there so I think I will check that out next time.

Don't know about Sam's but Costco has organic produce and wild salmon and good prices on nuts / oils as well. Just stick to the unprocessed stuff.

I try to go to costco and buy in bulk. Nuts are cheap, and while not primal, you can get very good and cheap cheese as well. They also have these massive bags of frozen stir fry vegetables and huge bottles of olive oil and balsamic.

Thanks Nick. Good suggestions.
I agree, OnTheBayou, but we can see Northwest Arkansas from our front porch and there is not cheaper place for diapers and milk for the kids. I have 2 Sam's within 4 miles of the house and 3 WalMarts. We also have 2 Super Targets within 5 miles. One Whole Foods and two Akins, but no Trader Joe's(?).
We do have awesome locally grown produce about 15 minutes away in a little town called Bixby http://www.conradfarmsmarket.com. And the best peaches in the world in an area called Porter http://www.porterpeachfestivals.com. SALUTE.

I walked away before my last post. When I looked again even more great suggestions. Thanks Primal People.

Just wanted to say that my local Sam's has the best produce and meat! Lots of great buys for a great price.
PS...I also wanted to add that as part of my primal lifestyle I search out companies with a great "green" report card and Wal-Mart just built one of the first totally solar powered stores in CA. Awesome! Just wish I lived close enough to support it!

Nice, a Wal-mart internet PR person decided to grace us with its presence. Account created just for this topic, even.

Nick...You're right, I did just join today but only because I JUST FOUND THE WEBSITE. I'm not a "PR" person, I was merely stating my opinion. The question asked about our views on Sam's and I gave mine. Other's included comments about Wal-Mart and I thought I'd include what I found out about them myself.
Sorry to overstep my newbie boundaries Nick. Was I wrong to say I liked Sam's and if so why?

Pardon me for being a skeptic, but these forums are rapidly indexed by Google, and any corporation wishing to manage their PR nowadays monitors web forum postings using Google Alerts, at a minimum.
I find it hard to believe that someone joined this website just to comment on how awesome Walmart is, given their history of employing near-slave labor, locking workers in at night, overinsuring elderly workers so as to profit off their deaths, and helping to ship American industry over to China...and that person is not in the employ of Wal-mart.
Similarly, when someone started a topic about the movie Food, Inc., a new user registered within a few hours of the thread starting and quickly posted a link to the Beef/Pork/Poultry/Dairy-council backed rebuttal website without noting the conflict of interest both inherent to the site and (presumably) of the poster.
Just sets off my BS detector, sorry. I'll shop at Sam's, but the Wal-Mart near me is a huge cesspit of poverty, sadness, filth, unfortunate lower back tattoos and short shorts, and impossible to get anyone to help you at the ammo counter.

Of course you can buy for less. They have less labor costs. They don't promote women. They have paid millions and millions of dollars in fines and back wages, and those are just the successful lawsuits. They get communities to overlook taxes which would support your schools and police departments, and then your taxes pay for the food stamps and Medicaid that their employees have to have to survive. They even have classes teaching employees how to do that.
I'm no saint, but I believe that policies like that are bad for America and bad for human beings. They practically created the race to the bottom. If you believe in treating people with dignity in wages, you don't shop Walmart/Sam's Club unless you have to. And certainly not for the prices.
Costco, I understand, is a much, much better place to work. Higher wages, even some unions. Walmart has an anti-union team standing by 24/7 to fly out in one of their private jets if the "U word" appears in a store.
