  1. So most of us who are fully primal don't consume any processed/manufactured stuff, except protein powders. Some might not even consume those, but for those of us who do, post your protein powder (if it's good), it's ingredients, price, and maybe a comment about it.

I personally use ON naturals, $50 flat, ingredients include protein blend (whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, whey peptides), fructose, natural flavor, lecithin.

I definitely don't like the fructose and I definitely don't like the lecithin. Most likely gonna find a new powder, hopefully from here.

EGYnutrition, I use the same exact one. What's your flavor? Mine is strawberry. I'm considering quitting it though, because of the fructose. Doesn't it bother you?

  3. Ok, since it is such a miniscule amount, I don't notice the negatives. But yes im pretty ticked off about fructose in a natural way, I actually just want straight no flavor no ingredients except whey! But I try not to stress about this stuff because that has its negative effects in its own. Hopefully some people can post some alternative powders for us to help out. Oh and I use vanilla because I assumed it had the least ingredients.

I use GNC's right now. Just their standard WHEY PROTEIN. I drink the chocolate by itself and use the vanilla when I want to mix in some fruit. I think when I use up all that I have (they were having a BOGO sale a while back and I really stocked up), I think I want to try the kind put out by Optimum Nutrition because I hear it's a good one.

  5. I don't use PP's, but based on the description I'd go with Jay Robb Unflavored:

    http://www.jayrobb.com/cat_proteinWheyUnflav_24.asp

The worst thing about it looks like the <1% soy (lecithin), plus the "dairy" itself, but in every other respect it would seem ideal -- zero carb, zero fiber, no casein, etc. The source cows are even grassfed :)

  6. I use a powder called whey cool. I believe it's they best whey available. Grass fed, minimally processed. I use mostly the unflavored, and then mix in other ingredients (frozen organic blue berries, cinnamon, vanilla extract, etc).

I also mix in a little bit of their strawberry flavored version for added flavor. They use steiva to flavor it, along with "natural flavors", which, I don't like, but I'm using about 1/10th of a scoop (its pretty powerful).

  7. You can get it here

(the strawberry one is called "paleo meal", almost the exact same thing, but more flavors available)

I use Prairie Naturals GMO-Free, Grassfed, Free-range Organic unflavoured Whey Powder, "Whey-Force". It's available at our local health food store for about $30.00 Cdn. for 300 g, which lasts about a month (using 1 scoop per shake, per day.) It contains nothing more than organic whey-protein concentrate. Nutrition values per 30 g (2-scoop) serving: 110 cals, 2 g fat, 60 mg cholesterol, 40 mg sodium, 130 mg potassium, 2 g carbs (including 2 g naturally occuring sugars), 24 g protein.

What's the fascination about protein powder?

  12. So far Jay Robb is looking like the best to me, the benefit to on is its 74 servings for 50 dollars... Guess it depends on your financial availability also

OTB theres no fascination, just pure convenience, it's a great snack-replacement, especially if I know im going to do a tough workout, I want my body to have sufficient nutrients. On top of that, when I go out at night I don't plan on coming home to eat, so that usually leaves a protein shake as a good snack a little ways in through the night. It's pure convenience. On top of that, these powders are great ingredients for dessert substitutes, or even primal bars if your into either of those.

You don't need protein shakes for a "tough workout." Your body doesn't use up nutrients all of a sudden and leave you short of something.

I'd rather get my protein the old fashioned "whey," I guess.

I use it as a meal substitute for breakfast. Don't feel like cooking in the morning.

  17. haha OTB I know your body doesn't need protein shakes for a "tough workout", im saying Id rather my body have some amino acids to utilize during a tough workout then not. That means chicken, steak, beef, eggs, and even a protein shake.

Now, I personally like running sprints, doing intense body work, on a somewhat empty stomach volume wise but sufficient nutrient wise over doing intense work on a stomach satisfied volume wise and nutrient wise.

I haven't used protein powder since going primal but the left-over jug I have sitting on top of my fridge is just the whey protein isolate you get at costco.

Nutiva Hemp Protein powder. From the Nutiva site:

One serving provides 15 grams of raw organic protein and 6 grams of fiber. Hemp contains all 8 essential amino acids with the bonus of good for you essential fatty acids (EFAs). Hemp’s superior 66% edistin and 33% albumin protein structure is the highest in the plant kingdom, making it the Gold Standard of Plant Protein.

Sometimes I get the Amazon Acai flavored HempShake & blend with frozen berries and a banana. Tastes great!

  20. Mine is a local store brand- Wegman's It's organic n' stuff, and sweetened with stevia. I really like it.

I use whey protein only occasionally. I use it to make coconut milk hot chocolate mostly. Otherwise, it's a quick improv meal. I'd say I use it only once or twice a month lately. It does make yummy shakes though- especially vanilla with blueberries blended in.

I've got a big bag of MyProtein unflavoured stuff, which I got before going fully Primal, but even at the time I figured my body could do without the extra sweeteners and chemicals and I was sick of the sweet powders anyway. I just checked and the ingredients are "Undenatured Whey Protein Concentrate, instantising agent (soy lecithin) [a very small amount is added]." Didn't realise it had soy until now.

Not sure if I'll bother ordering any more after I finish the bag, since protein powder is hardly Primal. I don't use it very much, just after workouts if I don't have any other protein source on hand, it's a convenience thing above all else.

  23. Naturade Vanilla Whey Protein. pretty stripped down in terms of skakes. the ones from GNC are seriously frankenproteins!

True Protein sells in bulk, unflavored or flavor added, and you have your choice of egg protein, whey, soy, blends w/bcaa etc. If you check on their forum, you can get a discount code from someone.

I think the only drawback is that it's sent to you in a plastic bag inside of a box, but I'm not sure if that has changed.

My personal favourite is T-Nation's Metabolic Drive Low Carb Whey Protein (Vanilla & Choc), I love it for it's great flavor and mixability.

I have also tried Jay Robb's Egg White PP and it's not too bad.
Not a fan of Hemp as it is kinda gritty.. might give it a go again to try it out..

Ugh I hated the chemically taste of Metabolic Drive (and I tried all the flavours). The strawberry flavour actually made my throat itch. Incidentally, MD is a whey/casein blend - casein causes issues for some people.

I have a tub of Whey Cool in my cupboard but it was astronomically expensive so I won't buy again, unless I win the lottery.

Being in the UK, I am able to use the excellent company, My Protein, which sells bulk, high quality protein at very reasonable prices.

I usually get the Impact Whey - my favourite flavour is chocolate-nut (yum!) but the choc-mint, raspberry and vanilla flavours are all awesome as well.

The flavoured powders contain sucralose, but they also do unflavoured for those that don't want anything artificial in there.
