Sofi,
Just wanted to say both Lindsey and myself really enjoyed meeting you, (and your 2 toddlers :) on Saturday!

Sassa and Sean: It was so great to meet you guys! I hope to see you guys again soon!
Sassa, I have never made primal ice cream - do you have to have an ice cream machine/maker? I kinda want one b/c I have seen so many great recipes and my friend has one and LOVES it. Thanks for all your encouragement, Sassa! And good luck with the daycare! Maya starts preschool in a few weeks and I am sure Ia m going to be struggling with the same issues. I am thinking of lying and saying that she is allergic to wheat and sugar! Is that totally wrong? Will I regret it later?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Dishonesty almost always ends up being regretted, at least anything more than just sparing someone's feelings. At the very least it'll come back to bite you if Maya gets fed wheat or sugar and doesn't have an obvious allergic reaction other than turning into a hyperspastic "normal" kid! This would be my number one issue if I had kids, and I'd definitely blister the air (and maybe more) if I found out someone went against my instructions on what to feed my kid just because they don't agree and "one little X won't hurt them"...
Posted 6 months ago # -
Well, I agree with you and frogfarm on this one.
I hate dishonesty, but when you pose it as "I don't WANT her to have "X", sometimes they just label you as 'eccentric' and might just go against your wishes anyway. On the otherhand, if you think about it, she IS technically allergic...we all are, to some degree, right?
I hear ya though, I am still teetering as to how to put it, exactly.

Day 22: Aug 24th
B: almond flour pancakes w/ fried egg on top and honey
S: banana, cashews
L: pasta fagioli soup (yes, it's still going...I made a BIG batch of it a long time ago!)
S: almost primal choc chip cookie (for recipe see here: http://healthyindulgences.blogspot.com/search/label/chocolate%20chip%20cookies)
D: Pork rinds (Not really "dinner" but whatever)
S: full-fat blueberry yogurtI am really considering lying to the school. This is her first time at school and I want a "method" for dealing with these type of problems. Maya is going to have to get use to being the "odd" kid when it comes to eating. I know they are going to provide snacks and I am sure they will be goldfish and apple juice - not allowed! I just feel like I have a clean slate right now and could set the trend for the next few years with how to deal with this and that way Maya will be use to being the "odd" kid right from the start.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Sofi, do you know any parents of kids at the new school? If you do, maybe you could sort of ask them questions about how the school handles kids who don't eat certain types of foods?
How many hours will she be there? Also, depending on what you end up sending with her, she may be the "odd kid out" but you know how kids are -- they'll probably be jealous that she has something different, and maybe it will end up being a conversation starter about healthy living. That's another thing to think about when considering lying to the school. You're telling Maya the true reasons -- i.e. eating healthier, feeling better -- so she is certainly going to mention those things when talking to the kids and teachers, eh? Or would you tell Maya that she is allergic?
What about just telling the school that the whole family feels better when not eating grains and sugars?
Posted 6 months ago # -
No, I don't know any parents that have already had their kids in that school (Sonship), but Kadri will be taking her Kaili there.
You are right about how Maya will talk to the kids/teachers. I should consider that in my decision. The truth is always better and I should trust that a school will honor my dietary restrictions - whether they are self-imposed or medically imposed. I just feel that if I tell people that I am "allergic" to stuff, they respect it, but if I tell people that I have made a lifestyle choice, then they judge you and may not respect it. But a school should respect it no matter what, so...
Posted 6 months ago # -
I agree. Plus you have to take into account your manner. Some people (no offense intended to any out there!) come across as very strident and weird when they discuss their own choices. You are NOT one of them. I think that if you explain things the way that I have always heard you do, they will respect you and your choices. They'll probably secretly be thinking about you ("Boy, she DOES look healthy and hapy!!).
Posted 6 months ago # -
Maybe ask the school about their normal 'methods' for situations like this.
I have a friend who's a teacher and there is a kid in the school who's soooooooo allergic to peanuts, that NO ONE is allowed to have their lunch boxes INSIDE the classroom. It's that bad!
Of course the school had to accommodate, lest this poor little boy should breath it in and die!
I applaud your efforts and hubby and I need to really sit down and come up with a game-plan for, not only our 10 yr old, but our 3 yr old with the obese, McD's-eating babysitter :-(

Just call Social Services in advance to explain the daily bag of pork rinds.

Thanks for all the support - I will keep you guys posted about how the school stuff goes.
Day 23: Aug 25th
B: almond flour pancakes w/ fried egg on top and honey
S: none
L: pasta fagioli soup (yes, it's still going...I made a BIG batch of it a long time ago!)
S: apple and few primal-friendly samples from costco
D: almond-dusted tilapia (another thing from the back of the freezer) and broccoli (Leila wouldn't eat broccoli but Maya did)
S: none yetI am putting less honey on the pancakes. Maya keeps asking for them every morning. She should probably just eat some eggs and sausage like me, but I think we are improving everyday. Leila never eats the pancakes - she doesn't really eat breakfast b/c she nurses all night long and wakes up with a belly full of my milk. She loves meat though and if there is sausage, she will eat it. She ate two links this morning!

Day 24: Aug 26th
B: tinkerbell omelet: eggs, sausage, spinach & cheese
S: banana
L: salmon sashimi, mung bean ice cream, and chicken tortilla soup
S: cashews
D: bacon-wrapped steak, broccoli, and some left over chicken tortilla soup
S: piece dark chocolateThe tinkerbell omelet was a big winner and an excellent way to sneak in some veggies: I pureed the spinach and eggs together!
Posted 6 months ago # -
Um, mea culpa on the ice cream. Okay, not MY fault, but guilt by association. My husband handed the ice cream over to Maya without even asking!!! Shame on Kevin! I know you said you didn't mind, Sofi, but I did!
Posted 6 months ago # -
No, I didn't mind at all, Wendy. I understand where your coming from though, but I think Kevin just knew that if he asked, the answer would be "Yes".
Day 25: Aug 27th
B: tinkerbell omelet: eggs, sausage, spinach & cheese
S: orange slices, blackberries (fresh off the bush!)
L: primal chicken veggie soup (pureed the veggies)
S: whole milk yogurt, cashews
D: primal chicken veggie soup
S: whole milk yogurt & peachNot bad, eh?

Day 26: Aug 28th
B: almond flour "toast" with cream cheese
S: banana
L: tuna salad on "toast" (kids didn't eat much, esp Leila)
S: cream w/ splash of coffee, cashews and banana
D: lebanese meatloaf, cucumber, carrot & celery slices (kids didn't eat much, esp Leila)
S: cottage cheese w/ raspberries & erythritol/stevia as sweetener & banana & dark chocolate (only Maya at this)Man, it's tough feeding these kids. They are so picky. Leila seems to be going through some kind of hunger strike lately. She is just not eating much and instead is nursing on me too much. I am really ready to wean that kid, I tell you what! I don't mind nursing to provide milk, but when she turns me into a human pacifier and I can't get anything done, that drives me crazy!
My problem is that the kids just want to snack snack snack (granted the snack options are typically fruit and nuts, which are much better than crackers and chips), but I struggle to get them to eat a proper meal. Leila hardly ate anything today. A few bites here and there. That's it. Should I be worried?

Day 27: Aug 29th
B: almond flour "toast" with cream cheese
S: banana
L: chicken salad on "toast"
S: cream w/ splash of coffee
D: fish cakes and orange slices
S: primal crepes w/ fig and marscaponePosted 6 months ago # -
Sofia, crepes with figs and mascarpone sounds super delicious. How do you make the crepes?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Sofi, I wouldn't worry about the days when Leila eats less, as long as there are still days mixed in where she eats more. Especially as long as she is still nursing. But even when she's not nursing, I've always heard that you should look at kids' nutrition over a whole week as opposed to one day b/c their appetites can change so much day to day due to growth spurts, sleep amounts, etc.
I have some more cleaning up to do around here and then I can't wait to make some of the bread!!
My dad loved the pancakes this morning. I mentioned afterward that they were almond flour, and he was shocked!
Posted 6 months ago # -
This was my first time making crepes and I did this:
2/3 cup 1/2-n/1/2
2/3 cup arrowroot powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
2 tsp vanilla
1 egg
2 teaspoons coconut oil
pinch of saltBut next time I might try coconut milk instead and maybe try to just leave out the arrowroot powder? They came out perfect though just the way they were.

Day 28: Aug 30th
B: cottage cheese with peaches
S: none
L: fish cakes
S: none (or I can't remember?)
D: roast beef w/ spaghetti squash (girls didn't eat much squash)
S: primal brownie w/ coconut milk whipped topping (made brownie recipe from recipe video on MDA post)Grandma sent a package for the girls: 2 packages of Betty Crocker microwavable chocolate cake! Dave and I were LIVID! I can't believe she sent those after just visiting us and seeing how we feel about junk food etc. So I explained to Maya that I didn't want her to get sick and that I promised her chocolate cake/brownies tonight, but a healthier version. But she had to throw away the crap Grandma sent her. It was a deal, so I made the primal brownies and she loved them (um, so did Dave and I!). Grandma thinks that the girls are suffering on our "diet" and therefore she must over compensate by mailing them junk. She even wrote a letter to me apologizing and saying that she just can't control herself b/c she loves her grand-daughters so much. Well, if she loves them so much, then she should want a healthy life for them.
My dad is coming here tomorrow and though he is a bit better than Dave's mom (Grandma), he also loves to give treats. I know for sure he is bringing a lollipop that has a bug inside - at least it's to show Maya the cool bug inside and not all about the sugar treat, but still...I don't approve and he is not even HERE yet. But I have been venting to him about Grandma and today's mail package of microwavable death cake and I think he gets my drift...

Sofia,
Be strong, Lady!
You're doing an awesome job, and we are here for you :-)Posted 6 months ago # -
Thanks for the recipe Sofia. Now, I only to make this and Fritchbeetle's Nutella and eat them together with some banana and grated coconut. Yum!

A little inspiration for raising Primal children!
Posted 6 months ago # -
That was true inspiration, AcmeBike - thanks for sharing. I hope that one day my girls will turn down ice cream on their own, but I doubt it. We shall see...it's only been a month for them on the diet so far.
Day 29: Aug 31st
B: primal brownie w/ coconut milk whipped topping (what kind of mom am I?!?)
S: none
L: grilled beef roast, topped with a pat of butter, whole milk yogurt
S: banana, fresh picked blackberries
D: roast beef, avocado, peaches
S: primal brownie w/ raspberry-coconut milk whipped toppingLeila did not eat any veggies today. Not even the avocado, which Maya loved and it was so yummy, I thought for sure Leila would eat it, but no. Leila did eat some peaches, and she loves the blackberries and she ate some of the dessert, which had banana and raspberries in it, so I guess there are some vitamins in there.
I was feeling lazy this morning and didn't feel like cooking anything for breakfast, so I let her have the brownie thing. It's pretty much just almonds, no? (wink, wink)
Posted 6 months ago # -
Primal brownies? YUM!! I think I better not make those quite yet!
About Leila, don't forget how they say it can often take 12-15 times of a kid having the exact same food before they get "used" to the new taste combo and texture. You're doing good, just keep doing what you're doing! I think all your food sounds awesome!!
What did you cook in prep for your parents' visit?
Hey, I have a friend I met through Kylie's swimming classes who is a nutritionist (and they have been going gluten free themselves so I bet she would know where we're coming from) and is a rep for a natural vitamin company. I was thinking of talking to her about Kylie's vitamins and seeing what the ingredients are in her company's stuff. Interested, or do you already have one you like for Maya?

This is a healthy (Hah! "Healthy", I slay myself) long post! Congrats on all you are doing for your family, this is absolutely life changing for all.
Don't be concerned about a toddler's avoidance of vegetable matter. It is NOT a big source of nutrition anyway. Feed them all the meat, fat, eggs, raw cream, raw heavy milk, seafood, butter, that they want, and keep some veggies at the table with every meal if they should want them.
For a growing mind and body, the animal sourced foods truly are key. Try for pastured/free range/organic sources, but focus on meat and animal fats.
That "Fat Head Movie" has a great attitude with his kids and it is already showing benefits in the kids own food choices. Awesome.

Sofi, I meant to tell you that I made some soup the other day when I wasn't feeling well, and tried your method of pureeing the veggies so that Kylie might eat some. Thanks for the idea! I have done that for other stuff but didn't think about it for soup. She just ate a little bowlfull and is now having a little slice of meat-crust pizza. Yay for primal kiddos! Hope you're having a good week :)

Sofi, that bites about Grandma!!!! I bet you were livid! Like you are absolutely the worst mother out there, concerned about her health and all!!! Eck! I can see my own battle with my mother-in-law now....
I REALLY want my family to watch "Fat Head". They follow my lead, but I want them to see the 'truth' behind it all, instead of just 'following my lead', ya know?
Still working on the kiddos myself. The 3 yr old will eat chicken, declare that he hates it, then eat more, then declare that he hates it....
He'll eat broccoli now and refuses to eat anything else, save for a whining for Mac n' Cheese, Bisquick Pancakes & McDonalds!!!
It's TRULY time to pre-prepare ALL meals for him to eat when at the babysitter's, which will be tough when the other kids *get* to eat their carbo-licious crap!
Am I wrong by motivating him to finish his meat by offering a follow-up dessert of strawberries and cream? So far, that's been my method...
Posted 6 months ago # -
Okay, so I have stopped journaling what the girls are eating, b/c my Dad is here and they are eating crap that is just too wrong to even write on here and i don't feel like arguing with him. He leaves on Wed. And Maya starts school on Wed.
I called her school yesterday and explained our family's eating lifestyle and they were not happy that I pack my own snack for Maya, but they said that as long as I would write up a letter, they would let her bring her own snack. Now here is the messed up part: at birthday parties and the like (Xmas parties, etc), parents may bring in cake/food, but it must be PREPACKAGED CRAP from grocery store! Nothing home-made! Huh?!?! Excuse me??!?! Let's feed them more preservative and chemicals? I am still deciding on whether I want to be a total nazi and not let Maya eat cake when it's birthday times or just let it go.
I can see that school lunches and grandparents are going to be my biggest struggles with this lifestyle.
I agree with you Sassa - it's hard to get kids to eat healthy in front of carb-o-licious crap! How do you teach your kids to make their own right choices even when mommy is not there?
I know it's wrong to bribe kids to eat dinner with dessert, but damn it works! I am keeping it for now.

Ugh, sorry it has been rough on you during the visit! It's always so hard right AFTER grandma and grandpa leave too, at least at our house. ("Grandpa let me play with this sharp stick," etc.)
Yikes about the school -- but at least they came up with a way to work with you. Maybe you can compromise with Maya, and say that on special days she can pick ONE thing to have at school? B/c at least my experience at Kylie's daycare was that it wasn't just one thing, it was cake plus sugary kool aid plus candy plus something to bring home...
Bribery is honorable ;)
P.S. on the bbq -- def stop by if you have a chance. I'm sure it will be going from 2 until bedtime, even if we're indoors!
