I have some more thoughts about eating crap. Just random musings. I don't really feel *guilty* or *bad* when I eat crap. It's more the physical ramifications that affect me. I'm not trying to lose weight and I am very fit so when I eat crap, I mostly just feel like why don't I remember how it physically kills me when I do it. I feel so good, why would I purposely ingest crap. I think for me it comes down to social situations and peer pressure. Not blaming anyone for my choices but it definitely makes a difference. Potlucks, holidays, visiting relatives, vacations...there is that social implication that assumes crappy food eating will ensue. My relatives are visiting next week and that is cause for concern. They eat horribly and expect certain food items to be in my house for their consumption (chips, soda, etc). Although I can purchase these things and stay away from them normally, something about the food dysfunction in my family kicks in and takes over- pressure from mom to eat some chips with her etc. Let's be miserable together mentality. Anyway, this is getting too long- just some thoughts as I sort out the primal way of living- thanks for listening :-)

Don’t we all go through this! It used to make my life hell but believe it or not I have come to the stage where I don’t even consider eating crap but have my treats of nuts, dark chocolate and berries and that really satisfies my wanting for crap and also don't have to beat myself up about it because I know that they are not toxic to my body.
Stay strong, maybe don’t indulge in your relatives wants as they are visiting your house. Last family dinner I had I didn’t have the usual bread, ice-cream, cake and soft drinks that I used to supple from them but instead, a bowl of nuts, freshly squeezed orange juice & mineral water and berries and cream and believe it or not they didn’t complain (well only a little about lack of ice-cream!).

I know what you mean. I think I'm finally starting to get over the family/peer pressure hill. It's easy at work and nobody really expects me to eat junk there anymore. Hanging with my family is a whole other issue.
I don't keep certain foods in my house. It's a rule, and just like my 'no smoking' rule in my house, if people don't like it, it's their problem. My house, my rules. Of course maybe that's why nobody visits my house- LOL.
It can be hard, especially when your family comments about your eating habits, or pressures you. "Here, can't you have just a little? A little bit won't kill you." Of course none of them suffer the symptoms after the fact and look at you strange when you tell them how the foods affect you.
I think it takes a certain amount of stubbornness for them to get it.

I just noticed that fitday breaks down the fats into saturated, poly, and mono. Can't believe I didn't notice that before.
Calories 1,705
Fat 101.0 52 %
Saturated 37.6 20 %
Polyunsaturated 13.4 7 %
Monounsaturated 40.9 21 %
Carbohydrate 87.3 20 %
Protein 115 28 %I might add a glass of merlot and some cashews later.
Have to go grocery shopping tomorrow to get food for Father's Day. And the relatives are coming Tues thru Sat so I need to decide what meals I'm making while they are here.
I got a good laugh today at work because this chick was offering me some rice sugar snack thingie and I said that has sugar in the ingredients and it's made out of rice. She says "You are that strict! Come on, just take a bite, it's not going to kill you." Totally thought of Diana's message above along the same lines and had to chuckle to myself. I didn't eat it, btw. Kept to my strawberries and greek yogurt.

Good for you! Way to be strong. :)
Posted 5 months ago # -
Good for you for not caving in.
I so would rather have the strawberries and Greek yoghurt than those rice thingies.
By the way out of curiosity what do you do with the sugar free syrup since your breakfast seems to be savory?

Miriam, back when I first found out I had Diabetes, I researched different ways of eating (not paleo yet) and started eating with the south beach principles. They had a recipe for mock french toast where basicly you fry up a couple of eggs with vanilla extract, add some butter, some sugar free syrup, and some cinnamon to the top. It is delish and I got hooked on it. BUT I ran out of the syrup this morning so that's one thing that is being cut out. I was just trying to use up the bottle but have no plans to continue the practice. Same thing with my turkey bacon. I'm just trying to use up what I have and then I'm going to make the switch to the real thing and try to get it without the nitrates and all the fillers. So that's the story behind my sugar free syrup :-)

Day 20

Carbohydrate 49.7 11 %

Ah thanks for clearing that up, still seems strange to me having eggs and syrup! Then again never had french toast so probably don't know what I am missing out on :)

I won't be tracking in fitday this week and probably won't have time to post food with the relatives visiting. Will sneak in once in awhile if time allows. I did not buy them any snacks or even bread for their sandwiches so I am sure the first thing they will do is go to the grocery store and load up on crap. My brother likes to eat out at almost every meal and that is always a huge struggle because A) I can't afford that, B) options are limited and I'd rather cook at home, and C) he lays on the guilt trips when I say No.
Day 22
3 egg omelet with spinach, tomato, and a sprinkling of feta
salmon and asparagus
blueberries/strawberries and heavy cream
portabella mushroom with sun dried tomato packed in olive oil, canadian bacon, and sprinkle of mozzerella
big ass green olives from whole foods (YUM)
cod liver oil
greek yogurtP90X- week 11, day 1- back & chest

If your brother tries to make you feel guilty for cooking him a homemade meal, why don't you ask him to pay for your dinner when you go out to eat?
You can get a salad with chicken or shrimp, or steak and veggies... or any number of things.salmon + asparagus = love. I'm jealous!
Posted 5 months ago # -
Aren’t brothers pains! Yeah make him pay for your dinner if he wants to eat out.
My brother always wants to eat at weird restaurants and the rest of the family have now said no to his choices, we now all eat at my place as cheaper for them (not for me though!) and also means I can take control of the cooking. So dish up one of your yummy sounding portabello mushrooms and that will make him change his mind.

Okay, so far so good. They got into town yesterday afternoon and went straight to Chili's. Was at work so didn't have to go with them. For dinner I made them chicken with pesto sauce and green beans with butter. They ate it up and all was well.
I got up and did my P90X work-outs at 5am both yesterday and today so I can spend evenings with them.
Yesterday I had a 3 egg omelet with spinach and a sprinkling of feta, salsa, almond milk, blueberries/cream. Left-over portabello concoction, strawberries, then the chicken pesto and green beans. Ate almond butter right from the jar. Cod liver oil as well.
Same thing for breakfast today- omelet, berries, almond milk. For lunch I have the left over chicken and green beans. Strawberries. Don't know what's for dinner yet as I'll probably have to go out to eat tonight. Wish me luck :-)

Sounds like you're doing great!
Blueberries and cream sounds soooo good.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Thanks Diana, it's been surprisingly easy. We went to Red Robin last night and I got a lettuce wrapped burger. Tonight is still up in the air. Tomorrow I think may be more difficult because I am taking the day off work and we are going to the county fair. I love soft serve ice cream that they have there but I think if I load up on blueberries and cream before we go, I won't have a problem. Or maybe take my almond butter with me and eat the rest of the jar. LOL
Posted 4 months ago # -
Oh, I thought I responded to this.
The burger sounds yummy. I wonder how a lettuce-wrapped hot dog (uncured) would taste. Carnivals can be a real bummer. It seems like there's nothing we can eat. I took some beef jerky with me to the last one and munched on that while walking through. The blueberries and cream sounds fantastic.
Depending on how much effort you want to put into it, you could freeze the berries and cream, and take it with you, so you can walk around the fair and eat it, so that you get that whimsical feeling of eating fair food without actually eating fair food.
Posted 4 months ago # -
that is an awesome idea! Will try it and let you know how I fare.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Relatives are gone and I'm back online. Did not do the berries and cream at the fair- took almonds with me instead and that worked fine. I am sick and tired of eating out though- I'm sick of eating period! I made the most primal choices I could but it was not optimal. Moving on- glad to get back to normal.
I made beef jerky in my dehydrator though and it turned out really good. I used a chuck roast and the butcher cut it into 1/4 inch slices for me. I marinated it over night (2 pounds worth) in a water, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper mixture. Took about 10 hours to dehydrate. Very flavorful.

Day 29
3 egg omelet with spinach and mushrooms
almond milk
sardines and green beans
nectarine
olives
turkey sausage and sauerkraut
coconut oil
cod liver oil
almond butterMy stomach felt funky today so I didn't eat very much.
I'm getting new blood work done on Wednesday. Probably won't get the results till I get back from Vegas later next week though. I'm excited and apprehensive to see the new numbers.

Got the blood work done this morning. I will post results when I get them.
Still having stomach issues.
Yesterday:
3 eggs scrambled
3 pork chops and saurkraut
nectarine
turkey sausage and green beans
Almond butter
cod liver oil
coconut oilToday:
3 eggs, spinach, mushrooms, salsa
3 pork chops, saurkraut
nectarine
Almond butter
halibut and cauliflower
cod liver oilI think nectarines make me hungry so I won't be buying any more of those. Will go back to berries instead.
Exercise: Week 12 of P90X. Only 9 more days to complete the program.

Hope your feeling better DCKMB, I actually find that nectarines and other stone fruits make my tum a bit funny (acidy) and then saw your comment that they make you hungry so might be the reason why you have been feeling a bit off. Maybe sauté in butter before eating and that might help and also will taste yummy!

Thanks Miriam, I am feeling better. I'm completely out of fruit now anyway.
Today is Day 32.
3 eggs fried in coconut oil, tomato
chicken salad from Red Robin
Almonds
Beef broccoli stir fry
cod liver oil
beef jerky
almond stuffed olivesHad lunch with a friend today who has just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I tried to educate her on what to eat but, good grief, it's a losing battle. Her husband is very controlling and thinks he is the expert on all matters so she's going along with his version of what's healthy. She asked me if a croissant was better than regular bread ^_^ I tried to help but I think her husband is going to win out on this one and keep feeding her granola and bagals.
I am getting shocked responses when I tell people what I'm doing. On one hand, it's annoying and I want to withdraw and not talk about it with anyone (avoidance of judgement and criticism) and on the other hand, I want to shake them and say Wake Up!

Good luck on the Blood work. Make sure you get a triglyceride number along with the HDL/LDL and use this web site. May give you a better LDL number than the lab will give you: http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~geoff36/LDL_mg.htm
I know how you feel. Someone told me today I look like I lost weight, I said "thanks" He asked "how are you doing it" I said "watching what I eat". End of story. I didn't feel like getting into it. He is a "cadio bunny" who eats frozen burritos for lunch every day, so I didn't think it would be a good conversation.

BTW -- I am of the opinion that croissants are better then regular bread. I'll take butter over soy oil any day and croissants have a much lower GI (67 vs 95-100)

Day 33
3 egg omelet with spinach and feta
Carl's Jr. low carb burger
beef/broccoli stir fryGot all my snacks for road trip to Vegas. Got a plethora of nuts- almonds, sunflower seeds, and walnuts. Got my homemade jerky, some almond butter and celery sticks, some big ass green olives, and I'm going to boil up some eggs as well. I have a big cooler so I think the perishables will be okay.
Usually when I go to Vegas, I like to sip down a few margaritas poolside. The thought of a margarita right now makes me feel ill.
I'll be bringing P90X with me and doing my final week of the program while I'm out there. That should be interesting.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Mmmm your road trip snacks sound amazing.
And I'm with you on the margaritas. They've always been "my drink" and my husband makes amazing ones from scratch (no mix) with grand marnier in them... but they are really unappetizing to think of right now. Seems they'd be really really really sweet.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Made it back from Vegas in one piece. Had an awesome time and ate "mostly" primal while there. Only one day where I cut loose and ate crap and sugary alcoholic beverages. We pretty much ate my primal snacks every day for lunch- cherries, beef jerky, and hard boiled eggs. Worked out perfectly.
Now to catch up on posts- looks like some of you guys are having a famine week so going over there to read first...
