Primal Challenge Journal (FNW)
(110 posts) (8 voices)-
My goals for this challenge:
1. Fruit: only berries (I've gotten a little fruit-crazy lately)
2. At least 8 hours of "moving slowly" (walking) this month.
3. 1 sprinting workout per week (about 10 minutes)
4. Son of Grok's beginner workout ( http://www.sonofgrok.com/2009/02/exercise-for-beginners-and-non-beginners-3-strength-and-resistance-training/ ) 3 times a week
5. No snacking after dinner
6. Get in bed before 11:30pm
I also want to start taking my fish oil supplements that I bought a couple weeks ago... 2 capsules with each meal will give me the right amount of Omega-3s I think.

Are we supposed to start a fresh journal for this challenge? I was just going to use my current one...
Posted 7 months ago # -
I wanted to start a fresh one... I don't think you "have to" though. I just wanted to symbolize the switch to doing things slightly differently from before - to myself. Does that make sense? haha.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Yeah totally makes sense. Think I will do the same.

thanks for the SOG link -- I'm gonna use that as I design my workout habit.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Sure thing grandma. Glad it was useful for someone else! :)

er... anyone know why I can't edit my posts above? It double-posted and I wanted to erase one, and also wanted to edit it for the end of the day... maybe because it's been replied-to now I can't edit? didn't know that. oops.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Must not be able to on this board. Bummer. :(
I love the SOG link. I'm gonna have to try that out! Grok on!
Posted 7 months ago # -
Since I can't edit my post I'll just "finish" here:
5. Had an early dinner, but no snacks afterward even though I've been wanting to nibble something. I think coffee or green tea might be the way to go when I want to snack after dinner (I always drink decaf coffee, btw). Maybe will make some coffee when the husband comes home from flying.
6. Will for sure get to bed early enough tonight! I'm going to aim for sometime between 10:30 and 11:30.
7. Took 2 capsules of fish oil with lunch and 2 with dinner. Have not experienced "Fish burps" so hopefully I got a decent brand and won't have that happen. It sounds so gross!
I bought ketostix at the store yesterday and am super excited to try them out to see if I'm in ketosis. Tomorrow morning I'll give it a try!
Aaaand... I was going to go for another walk with the dog but I don't think that's going to happen tonight.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Let me know how those ketostix work out. I thought about buying some for survival week but didn't. Should be very interesting! I think it takes about 2 days for me to get into ketosis- judging by how smelly my pee is by day 2 or 3. :-)
Posted 7 months ago # -
I'll let you know! I can't tell any difference in pee or breath smell. haha. So that's part of why I bought them...
And as I understand it, you may be in ketosis but still have a negative reading on the strips (if you are very well hydrated or if your body is using all the ketones and not expelling much extra). So they're not a 100% bet. It's 8:50pm now and I'm actually going to get ready for bed. VERY sleepy and husband is still not home from his flight yet.
The extra sleepiness might be from the benedryl. Stupid allergic reaction all over my body... benedryl was the only thing that seemed to help.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Weren't you going to the Dr. today for that?
Posted 7 months ago # -
ugh still awake. Going to bed in a sec.
Yes I was going to the doctor but cancelled my appt because I had NO itching all day long after taking benedryl yesterday. This evening it came back, so I took another benedryl. Sucks.
But honestly if I went to the doctor I'm sure he would've just "prescribed" me benedryl.

I like the ketostix idea. How much did they cost?
Posted 7 months ago # -
My husband got into poison ivy (so says the doctor yesterday), poor boy was all hivey and itchy yesterday morning. He was on benadryl and a topical steroid all day!
How did the ketostix work? I don't get the smelly pee or "fat burning smell" in my nose (my mom gets that) from ketosis either, so I don't know if I've ever been there. Even when I've had consistent days under 50 carbs, like in survival week a few weeks ago. It would definitely be interesting to know!
Posted 7 months ago # -
The ketostix were actually the walgreens brand, about 10 dollars for a bottle of 50 strips.
Hannahc, so sad about your husband! How unconfortable!
I haven't had smelly pee or breath or any weird smell in my nose either... but today I tested with a ketostix and it said I had trace to small amounts of ketones in my pee. So I'm definitely in ketosis.
I'm less concerned with the AMOUNT than I am with whether it's a yes or a no, so that's exciting.Went to bed way earlier than usual last night and was turning off my lamp to go to sleep by 10:20. Woo!

So far today I've gone on a 30 minute walk with my family (husband and dog) and done a SoG workout (only 3 sets because man it's harder than it looks just reading it). Then I had breakfast, which was 2 pieces of bacon and a piece of homemade sausage.
Soon we're going grocery shopping and then in a bit I'm going to hang out by the pool with some friends.Posted 7 months ago # -
sounds like a great day!
Posted 7 months ago # -
It has been fantastic! Lunch was another 2 pieces of sausage and a piece of bacon (I can't help myself... the sausage is SO GOOD. I might go have another as a snack). I also made iced coffee (just coffee, whole milk, and sugar-free vanilla syrup). Drinking another iced coffee now since I just got back from the pool and it's HOT.
Posted 7 months ago # -
mmmm, iced coffee. That's one thing I miss when I do no dairy during survival weeks.
Posted 7 months ago # -
There's always coconut milk. :)
I've had a weird taste in the back of my throat all day. A sign of ketosis I hope, and not just bad breath- lol.
Glad you're getting some real summer weather. I'm totally drooling over the sausage.
Posted 7 months ago # -
FNW it will be interesting to see what your results are at the end of the week with your ketostix if the results get stronger. I get sweet smell in the back of my nose/throat (if that makes sense) so I presume that is Ketosis.
mmm sausageā¦damn now all I can think of is sausage! ;)

So the sausage I made this time was this recipe:
http://www.joyfulabode.com/blog/2009/07/07/homemade-pork-breakfast-sausage/
but instead of pork I used 1 pound of pork and 1 pound of turkey. Instead of brown sugar I used a healthy sprinkle of chili powder... and no cloves. I also made the patties bigger this time (about twice as big).
Soooooo goooood.Tuesday, August 4:
1. Fruit: oops. :( Had a couple raisins as I was making trail mix for my husband. Other than that, none.
2. Moving slowly 8 hr/month: 30 minutes (50 min total)
3. Sprint 1/week: none
4. SoG workout 3/week: yes. 1 this week so far
5. No post-dinner snacks: Nope! I'm so full too.
6. Bedtime 11:30pm: Will definitely be in bed on time! I'm sleepy.
7. Fish oil: with breakfast, lunch and dinner
B: 1 piece homemade sausage and 2 pieces bacon
L: 1 piece homemade sausage, 2 pieces bacon, iced coffee (coffee, whole milk, sugar-free syrup)
S: 1 piece homemade sausage (I will be SAD when it's gone), iced coffee
D: Coconut lime chicken soup from the freezer (saved the leftovers when I made it a bit ago) and a little bit of broccoli and cauliflower with butter. So far so good! Except for those raisins that jumped in my mouth.
Miriam, I don't know if it will get stronger or not but I'm just happy knowing that I'm in ketosis at all, you know? I'd ideally like to lose a couple more pounds of fat this month, which I'm hoping the lighter fruit load and the no-snacking-after-dinner will help with! So knowing I'm running on fat makes me pretty happy.

I was looking at your sausage recipe, and I think I have to make it...like you did the second time though, no sugar or cloves, and fresh jalapenos instead chili powder (the jalapeno plants are just producing like crazy in the garden! everything has been spicy the last two weeks :). They seriously look delicous though.
Posted 7 months ago # -
ditto on the sausage. I have it on my list to make along with diana's vampire chicken.
The jalapeno idea sounds good.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Mmm jalapenos sound awesome for the sausage! Maybe with some cheddar cheese in there too? mmmmm.
Wednesday, August 5:
1. Fruit: none
2. Moving slowly 8 hr/month: none today unless cleaning counts - getting ready for family to visit. (50 min total)
3. Sprint 1/week: none and looks like it's not happening this week since relatives will be in town the rest of the week... i hate exercising in front of people
4. SoG workout 3/week: no. and unless i can squeeze it in tomorrow morning, it looks like only 1 this week due to relatives. 1 this week so far
5. No post-dinner snacks: got this one
6. Bedtime 11:30pm: It's 10 now and I will be in bed soon.
7. Fish oil: totally forgot this today in all the rush to get things ready for family
B: 3 pieces homemade sausage and it's gone now :(
L: ham and cheese omelet, iced coffee
S: some sips of my husband's milkshake - oops!
D: taco salad (lettuce, taco seasoned ground beef with mushrooms, cheddar, olives, salsa, and sour cream)Not so good today, or for the rest of the week (at least as far as exercise goes). Also, I know one meal this weekend we're going to the best pizza place ever... and i WILL be having pizza. But I'll stay primal other than that.
If I'm not on here it's because it's a BUSY weekend. Husband's winging Friday, relatives here Thursday through Saturday... then Sunday-Monday we'll be in Auburn for my brother-in-law's commissioning (he's going to be a student naval aviator in pensacola right after. woot. 2 in one family.)
Posted 7 months ago # -
Just poking my head in here before we drive to Auburn.
Been doing really well! I DID have non-berry fruit because a friend brought over a fruit tray I couldn't resist, but other than that... and the pizza (I had 2 slices)... been totally good. And fruit IS primal even if the non-berry fruit doesn't fit into my challenge. So I'm happy with it.
I have also been getting into bed at very reasonable hours, EXCEPT for the night of the winging party. We got home at 1:30 so...yeah. And no snacking after dinner even once. Woot!
We found out we are moving to Lemoore California. Don't know when yet but hopefully we'll have time to get everything organized and pack some stuff and maybe take a trip to see my grandparents first.
Lemoore wasn't our first choice (it was our last choice actually) but I'm getting excited about it... great weather, no mosquitoes, no humidity, and I have a few friends there already. The base housing is REALLY nice so we're going to try to get a house on base. Can't get on the list yet though because my husband doesn't have his actual orders. Soon I hope!

Tuesday, August 11:
1. Fruit: a few raisins, but I'll buy berries at the store tomorrow
2. Moving slowly 8 hr/month: 30 minute walk with the husband. I'm also going to add on an hour for "moving slowly" while family was here and while we were in Auburn, though the real number is probably higher. (2 hours 20 min total)
3. Sprint 1/week: none
4. SoG workout 3/week: no. I think I might change this to Lift Heavy Things 3/week, too btw. But a SoG workout would count for that (bodyweight stuff)
5. No post-dinner snacks: got this one even though I really wanted an apple fried up in bacon grease... but that would've been "bad" for 2 of my goals so I fought the urge.
6. Bedtime 11:30pm: Going to bed really soon. It's 10:22. I think I'm going to change this goal to 10:30
7. Fish oil: I keep forgetting this. I'll have to remind myself tomorrow.
Back from the crazy weekend... should be back on track now.
