Nut-Thin crackers. No wheat!

    I just discovered these when I visited my daughter this weekend, and I've found them in the local Publix in the health food/organic section. They are made by Blue Diamond, the nut people and come in a wide range of nut types and flavors.

    While not perfect, I feel a LOT less guilty using these now with hummus or my yogurt cheese. Sixteen (!!) crackers, 130 cals, 23 grams of carbs.

    Ingredients: "Rice Flour, hazelnut meal, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil (with natural tocopherols) salt, natural butter flavor (contains milk.)"

    No bwahaaahaaa wheat. Yay!

    Please, I know this isn't pure PB, that it has safflower oil - wow, a whole 3 grams per serving - etc., etc. White rice flour is w/o a doubt the least obnoxious grain product. I'm cool with this product.

    Bayou - I'm just curious, you're eating hummus? I LOVE hummus but assumed it was a no-no, or at least saved as a sensible indulgence. How often do you have it - ie sensible indulgence or a self-approved regular part of your diet? Is it of the chickpea/garbanzo variety? Thanks!

    So what then do you expect us to say to that if you know it's not primal:) Why not make some home-made crackers from nut flower and eliminate all unnecessary ingredients all together? Are you that big of a convenience-guy?;)

  6. Nut Thins are delicious. I used to love them spread with Laughing Cow cheese, but gave them both up when I went primal.

    Curse you for reminding me of their existence! ;)

  7. Hummus! Yes, please do let us know how you include this in PB (and I'm not having a dig, it's just that I love the stuff!). Do you treat it as an, er, treat?

    I just started doing hummus, maybe one container a week. A "sensible indulgence." Some homemade veggie dips will be a good addition. I tell ya, that yogurt cheese I made is incredible, although not one person responded to the thread. Thick, tasty, no fat so very high protein.

    I can't imagine going through the effort to make crackers when I can buy them close enough to good enough. Once again, maybe for the 543rd time, it's not just WHAT, but HOW MUCH.

    I hew probably 95% to The Dogma. I've made my informed decisions of what and how much I'll vary from PB Purity.

  14. I found some sesame, almond meal, and flax crackers at a health food store. I can't remember the brand - it may have been local. They were awesome and grain free. A bit higher on the carb scale, though, for those sensitive to carbs.

    As an aside, baba ghanouj and bruschetta are my two favorite primal toppings. The SoG chickpea-free hummus is also pretty good.

    I looked at the SOG recipe; I'm sure it's very good. Note the tahini. Probably worse than chickpeas. But the idea of adding zucchini is great.

    I think they're saying that you can make it with sesame, but most main-stream halvah that you can buy at a store is made with sunflower seeds. I know for sure because I love sunflower seed taste and I can't stand sesame very much. They just taste very bitter to me.
    There was also a very cool treat you could buy right on a street when I was growing up in Ukraine. It was basically crashed sunflower seeds with honey bakes as big squares. Mmmmm.

    So you're saying eating a handful of of sunflower seeds is worse than eating similar amount of rice calorie-wise?

  23. I don't know about blanket stating that seeds are bad.

    What about the seeds in blueberries? Blackberries? Tomatoes?

    Aren't nuts seeds too?

    I'd be interested in finding out about the tahini thing.

    But I made the hummus last night. And it rocks! :)

    Sean, you are smart enough to know that "accidental" seeds is nothing like "all" seed eating.

    Glad you liked the crackers. I think they are "the nuts." Pun intended.

    Chippers, of course seeds have more calories than white rice. The latter is only carbohydrate, for all practical purposes, seeds have the natural oils in them.

    I bought some of those a few weeks ago. Great for the occasional cheat. They are 23g carb for 16 crackers. I will eat no more than 6 as a serving. They are chrispier than the almond ones I made and I think a very reasonable cheat. Today for snack I had 6 of those woth cheese and pepperoni, held me over for a long while.
