Nut Fast anyone?

I'm planning on doing a Survival Week style contest. My only rule is
- No nuts
As in no bingeing of nuts. If they are present in small amounts in salads, stirfries or other dishes, that's OK. But no eating of nuts for entertainment or out of boredom and no eating nut butter straight out of a jar until it's empty. I'm sure most of you eat a handful now and then are ok with it. This contest is for people like me who can't seem to control their nut intake. I'm thinking of doing it for a month. How about Nov 23rd - Dec 23rd? And we report our progress at the end of every week. In my case, the rest of my diet is not going to change. Want to join me?

I am definitely in. Last week I was doing really well with a can of roast almonds at work. I'd count them out, 11 at a time, and enter them into FitDay. I was good with them for the whole week. Then, I ended up having to go into work on Sunday. I was bored and lonely, and went to the store across the street and bought macadamia nuts. I started off okay, counted them and entered them into FitDay. Then, I kept having to go into FitDay and increase the quantity. End of story: I ate the whole 4.5 oz can! Over 900 calories! I was angry at myself and have declared myself on a nut fast already, so I may as well join in with you. Stalled my weight loss last week with that one blunder.

That's the story of my life. I would walk up to the Rite Aid near my office to buy raw nuts but yesterday I got rancid roasted almonds from the vending machine - twice! That just did it for me.

I was thinking about a nut and dairy fast, right after thanksgiving. Too funny!

Maba, you're definitely suffering from nut addiction! LOL! Good luck on your nut fast!

@Sharonll
I know how you feel! But my version has a 1kg bag involved... 7,000cals~ half gone
Surprisingly I didn't gain, just wasn't losing for a day or two...

ok, I m in....I wont be eating any nut products, including coconut flour, or nut milks, and no seeds either, and as I have most of a jar of sunflower seed butter in the cupboard the 23rd of Nov, works well.

I'm in. Moderate servings of nuts and fruit are for after weight loss. While I'm trying to lose weight I need to stick to meat/eggs/veg. I am however going to keep using coconut oil to cook with.

I'm not gonna do it because I'm pretty good at moderating my nut intake (hehe)... but um... reading this post makes me want to go grab some cashews. yum!

I'm not in on this as I'm having to take silly amounts of medication for my sciatica, nuts are what I use to make sure my stomach isn't empty before taking the pills. I can't really stomach anything else at 5.30am to be honest!
Good luck to the rest of you though!

I am game! Thanks for starting this, Maba. I went and bought my first bag of macademias the other day- most delicious mistake ever. Ive had to seal it and push it to the back of the cupboard.
Im eating mostly meat, eggs (LC), so i always used nuts to 'get my fat in.' Now i will rely on coconut oil and fatty meat.
good luck!Posted 4 months ago # -
@62shelby
I don't think Coconut can be considered a nut in any way. The seed is there somewhere, but its easy to avoid it.

I'm in. I have a HUGE problem with nuts (as in not being able to stop eating the damned things).
Posted 4 months ago # -
You guys don't get sick of them? :p I feel like I HAVE to eat them since they're the only accessible, easy snack food that will hold me over 'til my next meal. I get hungry a looot...

Anand, whatever, thats what I have chosen to exclude, nuts AND seeds.

I've been on a nut fast for a good month already. :)

Yay, looks like I'm in good company!
I took my mom to the naturopath today and guess what - she's sensitive to wheat, almonds and peanuts and therefore has to be on a wheat-free, almond and peanut-free diet. The doctor thoughts I may have inherited her senstivities, when I told him wheat doesn't agree with me. Who knows, I might be sensitive to almonds too. He also said that sometimes we crave foods that we are sensitive to!! Will have to get the test done on myself at some point.

Okay me too :D

@62shelby
Sorry, I just can't believe it is a nut. Anyway it should be very healthy.@Jess
Are you sure you are eating enough? I think Grok didn't snack. He ate as much as possible at one meal, and ate the next time only when he felt hungry.So if you are feeling hungry eat a full meal. Don't go for a snack. You don't want to spike your insulin for no reason. I believe that insulin should be spiked only at a meal. When I learnt about the insulin problem, the first thing I cut off was snacks. Everything else came later.

Anand-- what Shelby is trying to say is that she's including seeds in with her "nut and seed" fast. She's not insisting that coconuts are nuts-- she's referring to them as seeds, which they are and she's excluding them along with nuts.

Thanks Ecala, thats exactly what I am saying. You see, I cant really exclude just nuts when there is a whole world of seeds I can project onto whilst on a nut fast, they may not be the same genus Anand, they still have same overall net effect when eaten to excess, ie not good.

I went to Wikipedia, and it says that Coconut are nuts. I still can't believe they are nuts ;-). They are so big, and so good. That was what I meant in my last message. I didn't mean I don't believe you. Well English is not my first language and I do sometimes make mistake, and realize later.
Going off Seeds is all good. I just wish Coconuts were not seeds ;-).

Anand, its all good, I just get a bit wary of dogmatic pedants, not saying that you are, I am just wary ;P. We are all on our own journeys, making our own choices, right or wrong, who can say? I am the opposite I cant believe it isnt a nut, (if it looks like a duck) but I have read elsewhere that it is a seed. I dont mind wikipedia but I dont think its the last word in anything, depending on the topic it can be a mediocre resource at best. To me, coconuts are kind of like a nut and a fruit, which makes them all the more alluring ;).

Maba don't beat yourself up for your nut addiction, we are only human. I used to be addicted to nuts, particularly almonds, until one night, during very strong late munchies, I ate almost a complete Trader Joe's bag of them. Next day was hell, you have no idea the havoc they wreaked on me, probably because of the phytic acid overdose.
Anyway, long story short, I'm over almonds now. I have them from time to time, bit as soon as I smell them, I become disciplined immediately.
So maybe your solution is to artificially induce very strong munchies and then feast with nuts. Your brain will learn the lesson, like mine did.

In the big scheme, we are all nuts in this big shell we call existence :)
Posted 3 months ago # -
Philosopher, in a nutshell, lol.

SS: The one time I ate a couple of handful of raw almonds (as opposed to pasteurized ones we get here), it wreaked havoc on me. But I've eaten much larger amounts of pasteurized ones and I seem to be ok. Maybe I should get my hands on raw ones and induce the munchies.

I'm on board with the whole nut fast. Im gonna try and make it 3 weeks without nuts-- I've become way too addicted >.<

@Anand Srivastava, I don't think we should always try and emulate "Grok". I don't think it's necessarily "better" to eat just two or three meals a day compared to five or six smaller ones...After all, "Grok" would definitely be snacking on berries/seeds or what have you on a hunting excursion...
But regardless, I do eat full meals...This morning I had 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and 3 summer squashes sauted in butter...Could definitely eat two hours later! Usually I'll have 5-6oz. of meat and some vegetable in butter, which I would consider a "full meal". I think it may have something to do with my body composition, age and metabolism...I'm young, very slender, and have a lot of lean muscle mass. Perhaps I just burn through food quickly? :)
Insulin doesn't spike much when you eat primal snacks...Eating a carrot and some sunbutter isn't really going to be that detrimental..I'm not too worried about that, it's just almost obnoxious that I'm hungry so often. How do you feel when you finish a meal? Full, stuffed, or just satiated?
