Ketosis = thirst?

  1. Just wondering if any of you experience EXTREME thirst when you're in heavy ketosis.

Usually when I'd test w/ketostix I'd be on the lighter end of things... but today I'm at the second-darkest which is awesome. Probably due to IFing till dinner yesterday and then again till dinner today.

But today I've been incredibly thirsty all day long. It's not a salt thing because I've actually been using less salt than usual... I'm wondering if it's due to being in ketosis.

If so, does anyone know WHY? Is more water necessary to flush out excess ketones or something? Or maybe it's because I'm not getting much water from my food (like I would if I were eating more veggies) since I've mostly eaten meat?

In any case, it's pretty exciting for me. One good thing about my husband being out of town is that I get more flexibility with my eating. I'd been really craving some IFs for a while, but he likes to eat 3 meals a day and I generally join him even if I'm not hungry (I know, I know).

Maybe I'll stay in ketosis for this whole 2 weeks and lose a bit more of this "last 10." That'd be good.

  2. (he also LOVES veggies at every lunch and dinner, and I love them too but I've been wanting to try VLC too for a while)

If I got to eat your food, heck, I'd want to eat 3 times too. Loved your Primal party foods series.

When I IF, surprisingly, I don't feel thirsty but sometimes sip hot water to keep boredom at bay and to stop me from thinking about food.

  4. Aww maba you're so sweet. :)
Glad you liked the primal party foods.

I don't think I've been this "deep" into ketosis before... but when I was at the lighter end of the ketone spectrum I wasn't super thirsty either. I just dunno.

FNW:I get the same way when I'm into the Dark Purple
:-D Drink water until you're not thirsty. Oh, yeah. Don't make the mistake I made, and have alcohol; 'cause that will SUCK.
    You ROCK, Girl!

  6. Oh geez... I remember the first glass of wine I had while on the PB. It was miserable because I was in ketosis. Made me really really hot and I couldn't sleep that night. Tossing and turning and felt jittery as if I had had a bunch of caffeine.

I drank a bunch of water. a BUNCH. I'm not really thirsty anymore but my mouth is still dry. I peed on another stick and it was light purple, not dark, so I guess I thinned it out a bit. HA

Lately I never feel the need to drink water between meals. I'm well under the 8 cups a day and I feel fine.

  9. @ Raphael - no water?! My goodness me...

I find personally that I don't get as thirsty as I used to with the PB. I also fast everyday.

A question though: What kind of foods are you eating to get into and stay in ketosis? I've been wanting to try but I'm afraid that I may be eating too many carbs. Do you just cut out vegetables and fruits completely?

    Posted 4 months ago #
  11. Raphael, I usually don't feel thirsty between meals either... this is just a new development after 2 days of IFing till dinner + heavy ketosis.

GtrBMart, the first day I IFed till dinner and then had some chicken (rotisserie. mm) and a bit of sauteed mushrooms and onions. Then I had a few raspberries.

Second day IFed till dinner again, but ate earlier than the day before (like 4pm) and had more chicken and some jalapeno pepper halves filled with cream cheese and wrapped with bacon (6 halves, 3 peppers total).

  12. FNW: I get the same thing. Im super thirsty the longer I IF. I assume it b/c I get deeper into ketosis.

As a side note, I havent really drank since pre-primal days and after a LARGE amount of consumption on Halloween I slept w/o covers all night b/c I was so hot! I normally do the heating blanket on like 4 b/c the temp goes down to 59F at night in the house! Lol.

    Ketosis = Bliss

FlyNavyWife, I am not sure if there's a ling between thirst and ketosis. But fat consumption usually triggers thirst. It does in me at least.

Also, being in ketosis can make you feel a dry-rusty taste at the end of the tongue, which might also play a big role.

  14. Tara, that is pretty crazy... interesting how your body becomes so much more sensitive, isn't it?

SS I agree, ketosis rocks. And interesting comment about fat consumption leading to thirst. I'll have to pay attention to that in the future.

I don't use the ketosis strips, but am pretty sure I'm in ketosis. One sign is the slightly yucky taste in my mouth.

Anyway, I've also noticed that I've been more thirsty lately, but feel that in my case, that is partially influenced by the salty things I eat -- smoked salmon and salted pork fatback, mmmmmm....

    Posted 4 months ago #
  16. Smoked salmon is sooo amazing.

Yeah, usually if I'm thirstier than normal it's due to more salt.
The thing is I've been trying to use LESS salt than usual this week. So that's not it.

Your kidneys process ketone bodies. Since your body has an excess of ketones, as indicated on the piece of paper you pee on, your kidneys are working double time which of course will make you thirsty.

Also the reason why some will tell you long bouts in ketosis will give you kidney disease. Which of course they read from some anti-Atkins website that say "some studies suggest..."

What's all this taste-in-the-mouth thing? I've noticed that my breath sort of stinks lately, lol, is that ketosis? Yesss!

PrimalK, I never said I don't drink water... but the only times I usually drink it are a bottle of water at the gym, a cup of tea with every meal, a sip before bad. I suppose that's way under the 8 recommended cups per day, but I never feel the need for anything more than that.

When I'm in ketosis I need to drink a lot of water, at least 1.5L a day. Otherwise I feel like crap.

Am I doing something wrong then? I'm never thirsty. Previously, on my carb-heavy times, I used to be thirsty ALL the time.

Besides, Grok was always in ketosis, right? I can't imagine that he was thirsty the whole time...

    Posted 4 months ago #
  21. Raphael, not necessarily. I've been in ketosis before but not thirsty like this... But I've also never gotten that dark of a purple reading on the ketostix so maybe this is more intense than before. I'm usually at "trace" amounts of ketones when I'm in ketosis.

I dunno... still thirsty, still drinking water. This is my 3 day of intensive IF / VLC / ketosis. Yesterday and the day before I only ate dinner. Today I haven't eaten yet.

What's the max amount of carbs one must consume in order to stay in intense ketosis?

    Posted 4 months ago #
  23. I don't know. Probably everyone's body differs.
Right now I'm eating less than 20g of carbs a day.

How many calories are you eating?

How many grams af protein are you eating?

Did you take any body fat % and total weight measurements before you started?

    Posted 4 months ago #
  25. Wow y'all are very interested in me today. hahaha.

I just took some tape-measure measurements and a scale measurement, not body fat.

The last couple days I've been around 800 calories for the day. Don't worry - it's not a long-term thing, just a few days of IF will do that to you. I plan to get up to around 1200 or so once my protein powder gets here. Still very low carb though.

Usually my calories are between 1600-2000+ (though I haven't been tracking lately) and I have been maintaining, not gaining, with very little exercise (just some walks with my husband and dog).

Protein is at least 60g a day.

Why all the interest in my details? Just curious. I don't mind sharing but it's not like I'm on some magic regimen or something. Just plain old IF for a few days with very low carbs.

I was just worried that you where not eating enough calories and calling it Ketosis and thinking that it was OK for 2 weeks.

With BF% you would know for sure if you had lost fat or muscle when you come back to maintenance calories.

It looks to me (not like I am the Keto Cop or anything like that) like you have it under control :)!

60 grams of protein is too little, isn't it?

    Posted 4 months ago #
  28. oh no, chima. Just this low for a couple days, no worries. :) I'll get the calories back up, but I do still want to have a deficit so that I'll lose a couple pounds over the 2 weeks.

I do intend to stay really really low on the carbs though so I'll stay in ketosis for the whole 2 weeks.
    That's the plan anyway.

Raphael S, 60g of protein is fine for me, especially since I'm not working out hard or anything. I'm 130 pounds (ish) and when I used one of those internet bodyfat calculators with my measurements before I was at about 30% body fat (yeah I'm skinny fat), so 91 lean pounds. At .5g/pound that'd be only 46g of protein a day. And I get more than that.

Anyway, 60g is on the low end of it... usually I get around 80-100g of protein a day.

Y'all, don't worry about me! Seriously! If you had seen the way I've been eating for the last, oh... 3 months... you'd know that a couple weeks of moderation is definitely in the stars for me. haha.

The reason you get thirsty is that the lipolysis require a lot of water to work. So when you are on a fat metabolism you use more water than usual because lipolysis is triglyceride hydrolysis.
