I am wondering if Ketoacidosis can really be induced by a low carb diet and whether it is dangerous for non diabetics? CW tells us not to go into ketosis for long otherwise we will kill ourselves!
Any opinions are welcome because I am a little confused.

It's fine. The fear is, as you say, CW.

It's what we were meant to do when we can't get food.

  3. Ketosis is fine, but /= ketoacidosis, which should definitely be avoided.

  4. I think ketoacidosis and ketosis are two different things. 20g carbs a day will usually produce ketosis, which is when we use our own excess fat reserves for fuel. (And get bad breath:) I find mint or basil leaves helpful by the way.)

    Wiki says this:
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a potentially life-threatening complication in patients with diabetes mellitus. It happens predominantly in those with type 1 diabetes, but it can occur in those with type 2 diabetes under certain circumstances. DKA results from an absolute shortage of insulin; in response the body switches to burning fatty acids and producing acidic ketone bodies that cause most of the symptoms and complications.[1]

    And this:

Ketosis should not be confused with ketoacidosis (diabetic ketoacidosis or the less common alcoholic ketoacidosis), which is severe ketosis causing the pH of the blood to drop below 7.2. Ketoacidosis is a medical condition usually caused by diabetes and accompanied by dehydration, hyperglycemia, ketonuria and increased levels of glucagon. The high glucagon, low insulin serum levels signals the body to produce more glucose via gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, and ketone bodies via ketogenesis. High levels of glucose causes the failure of tubular reabsorption in the kidneys, causing water to leak into the tubules in a process called osmotic diuresis, causing dehydration and further exacerbating the acidosis.

    Well, there you go. HTH

  5. good summary, marloe.

I like ketosis because it means my blood sugar is going to be lower.

Ketoacidosis occurs when your blood sugar remains too high for an extended period of time (higher than 300)and will mean an emergency room visit.

    Thanks everyone! Great posts!!

I guess I was a bit worried because I read about some woman who ended up in ER because of an "Atkins diet induced" ketoacidosis.:(

The underlying theme is that with certain illnesses, like diabetes, or environmental situations, either can be bad.

But for healthy people, limiting carbs and living off the fat of the land is just fine.

Or, "the fat of the hind" in my case ;-)

I swear I could live for at least three months just on what's on my butt.

  10. Is this the story, Maranne? http://news.softpedia.com/news/Atkins-Diet-Not-Recommended-for-Everyone-19848.shtml

Here's an interesting blog refuting it:
    http://weightoftheevidence.blogspot.com/2006/03/ketoacidosis-complication-of-atkins.html

I think the ketoacidosis was caused by something else, if it was ketoacidosis at all.

Ketone levels in ketosis are generally about 20 times lower than those in ketoacidosis, fwiw.

  14. Personally, I feel my best when I'm in ketosis. :)

Still trying to get rid of the belly. Wonder how long it would take for it to go away if I went strait carnivore. I've done it for a couple days at a time and felt fantastic.
