  1. Yes I am. I hit the motherload of grass fed beef at Henry's. Don't know why I didn't try them before. I paid $28.79 on 5.03 pounds (bout 6 different packages and types of beef). Price per pound came out to $5.76. Now that I think about it, I should have just snapped up all that they had but I didn't. Next time. My total grocery bill was $127. I shopped at Food 4 Less last time I went grocery shopping and it was $105 so Henry's was not that much more expensive and I got good meat and organic produce too.

    YAY for me!

Ooh, lamb chops, me likey! I too have noticed that my total expense is pretty much the same or only slightly more than before, now that I don't buy anything from the middle aisles.

  6. Great find! Now I wish there were a Henry's near me. Don't know where you live, but they don't exist in the Pacific Northwest.

My niece asked me the other day if my new way of eating cost more. . .I thought about it and answered that it really didn't because I wasn't buying prepared foods any more (and it's helped that I'm trying Henry's and TJ's more than Whole Foods).

crunchysue: I think Henry's was strictly SoCal, but my understanding is that they were bought out by Whole Foods and are now associated with the Wild Oats folks.

  8. @Catalina - Interesting. Do you find that TJ's has good meats? I hadn't thought of looking there. I shop at a local chain called New Seasons, which was started up a few years ago by some people who defected from Wild Oats.

You can't tell the natural food retailers w/o a program. I thought Wild Oats was now part of WF.

New Seasons sounds like the chain started by the ex-CEO's of Wild Oats. They had a non-compete clause in the buyout, but when that expired they had all their plans made. In Denver, that's Sunflower Market. I've seen flyers in the exact same format in Austin, it had another name there.

I wish there was one here in Sarasota. WF needs some competition.

crunchysue. . .TJ's has some okay (not grass-fed, but no hormones, antibiotics, etc) ground meat and an organic, already-cooked roast beef that I get sometimes (about half the cost of meat at WF, so I compromise)

OTB--I agree with you about needing a program--I think it's that way with just about ALL food shopping--all of the labels--natural, organic, grass-fed, grass-finished, etc. Mark should publish a handy-dandy pocket-sized shopping guide!

Yeah, Wild Oats was bought by Whole Foods.
We have all 3 here in NM. We have Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Sunflower Market.
I do most of my meat/vegetable shopping at Sunflower. Although not grass-fed, it's all hormone free and quite inexpensive. Been doing mostly meat and fresh veggies shopping to keep it super cheap. Been getting by on about 40-50 bucks of groceries each week for me and my daughter.
I don't go to TJ's as often (except for almond meal since it's CHEAP there, oh and booze of course) since it's across town from where I live, but a new, closer location is opening up in a couple weeks. I haven't bought much meat there because it seems like their meat selection is pretty small and mostly more expensive than Sunflower.
I really don't shop at Whole Foods due to the prices and I never know about when or what their sales are since they don't put out a weekly mailer with specials.

My grocery trip today was at a local "Amish Market" - it's so neat... They're only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday and all their stuff is brought down from Amish Country PA. They do have all the baked goods and prepared stuff but I skip all of that... I head straight to the chicken/turkey and meat counter... Today was 10 turkey thighs and 2 lbs of ground turkey - my new kick... Last week was 6 flank steaks and 1-lb of ground beef... Not grass-fed but antibiotics and hormone free, allowed to roam outside... and "Amish"... They might have been driven in buggies - who knows... but I've been going there for a couple of years now and I can't get my meat/chicken anywhere - nothing else look or taste as good...

  13. I wish we had some Amish down here. I remember going to an Amish farm in Ohio once when I was a kid (family vacation) and it was so neat.

I love that my parents are surrounded by Amish. I buy my eggs from them. Free-range eggs for $1.50 a dozen, so I freely eat 2 dozen or more a week. They've also got a huge greenhouse, which means tons of cheap veggies. The immediate neighbors raise goats. While they won't sell me any for meat purposes, they will give me raw goats milk. I just have to actually go get it, which I haven't yet done. Amish rock!

Today's amish market bounty was a nice chuck rost - about 4 pounds, 2 1-pounder ground beef and six flank steaks... My parents will be coming to town next week and will be staying with me - the flack I will get for eating steak for breakfast... Of course, I'll do my best trying to laugh their concerns off... And go for long run/walks - away from them... BTW - I cooked the roast for 4 hours in alum foil, with a sliced onion and sliced carrots- it was AWESOME! I will use to make hash tomorrow for breakfast...
