How to survive carb-overload

    Hi All,
I stumbled upon MDA recently and have been trying to eat mostly Primal since then. I started on South Beach Diet about 7 weeks ago and lost weight easily in the first-phase ( a Primal-like phase) but as soon as I re-introduced whole grains in the second phase, I started piling on the pounds I'd lost which led me to google low-carb diets and that's how I found MDA. And I'm so thankful for it.

Coming to the main question, I'm visiting India (my home country) next week for a month. Our traditional diet is very carb-heavy (white rice, wheat, lentils, beans...). Of the 4 weeks, I won't even have access to meat-seafood at home for 2 weeks at my vegetarian in-laws home. I don't want to inconvenience them for my sake. How can I survive the carb onslaught? How can I get enough nutrients by eating a primarily vegetarian (and refined carb-heavy) Indian diet?

Millions of them seem to be doing well enough on that diet. 4 weeks won't kill you. Sometimes it's best just to go with the flow and not worry so much about carbs and lentils and all that.

  3. Hi Maba, I don't have any advice but just wanted to say that I did south beach also for a time. They say you can't stay in phase 1 forever because it slows metabolism blah blah blah. I'm here because I don't think that's true. I felt like crap when I started adding back the starches. Also wanted to say that I was a vegetarian for 6 years before this I understand what you're saying (over on your intro post) about making the switch. It's tough. Anyhoo, good luck in India. Best to enjoy time with family and just do your best with food since it's only a month.

Maba I know what you mean. I was in Bangalore for a while a year ago and, while I really loved the food, it was almost impossible to get something like a steak with a salad. Goa was a different story though.

I would try to avoid the refined carbs in bread and stick to complex ones. I'd be careful with that delicious sweet tea with milk.

Thanks for your words PC and DCK. SS, I was just going to make myself a cup of Chai as a treat since I've been pretty good with the diet the last couple of days. Darn!
