    Be honest. ;)

Also share some tips you have for getting more. This is admittedly my most challenging area of PB life.

  2. I'm almost always in bed between 10:00 and 10:30 and wake up anywhere from 5:00 - 7:00. I also have kids, and a puppy. So there might be some abrupt wakenings in the night.

I set my alarm for the absolulte latest time that I can get up and ready for work (and a workout on some days) without having to rush around. I know that according to PB we're not supposed to use alarms and have our circadian cycle dictate when we get up but when it's dark until 8:00am these days, that doesn't fly for people who can't work their own hours.

I try to be in bed at 9 pm every night, lights out at 10pm. I wake up at 5:30 am for work. I need an alarm to wake up, I could sleep for 12 hours without one!

I try to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

  4. I'm doing better on this lately, thanks to intentional focus on getting to bed early. These days, I manage about 7 hours most nights, and I have a "sleep in" day or two when I get 8 or 9 hours.

For much of the past year, I was scraping by on about 5-6 hours...not enough!! It took a few months, but the cumulative effect started affecting my workouts. When my muscles felt cottony and my head cloudy all day, I knew something had to change!

  5. very recently I managed to unwind a lot of responsibilities that had caused me mounting stress over a period of about three years. the result as of the last week or so has been ever increasing better quality sleep each night. but at its worst a couple of years back if I slept five hours uninterrupted it was a miracle, and I managed to do some damage as I was still training hard, I really should have backed off but didnt. I am also being diligent about getting my vit d levels up, and taking about 5000IU a day.I had my levels checked recently at around 100, which is ok, but my health care givers want it a lot higher.

  6. Here's a little chart I found that I thought was interesting...

If I could quit my job I'd be better suited to this primal existence. ;)

My alarm goes off at 4:30 every day. I work out in the mornings before work, it's the only time I'm guaranteed to have.

I try to be in bed by 10 every night but it's usually closer to 10:30 and by the end of the week, I'm pretty worn out. I have a five-year-old who lets me sleep until 7 or 8 on the weekends, and that is better, but I usually end up staying up later on the weekends anyway.

I work for a school system and do much better on my summers off with a good 8-9 hours of sleep each night. :(

    Hi, Shelley.
I hope you get lots more of that sleep and vitamin D on your trip!

I admit that I am horrible in this category... absolutely horrible. Sometimes I don't sleep until three or four in the morning. I am a college student (poor excuse) and so I have an erratic schedule that changes day-to-day. Sometimes I sleep in until one in the afternoon, sometimes I nap for 3 hours in the middle of the afternoon, sometimes I go to bed at 9:00 PM and get up at 5 AM. It all depends. I don't even know where to start when getting my patterns under control. I also skype friends on the other side of the world at midnight...
At least I am not deprived, just sporadic.

@Lovestoclimb, interesting chart! Puts things into perspective a little bit...

@Klcarbaugh, you are HORRIBLE! Haha I can't believe you feel good sleeping so sporadically! ROUTINE sleep is much better, regardless of whether you're getting enough hours otherwise I've noticed...

I usually get into bed between 9:30ish-10:30ish and wake up between 7 to 8:30ish every morning...To help me snooze better, I reserve my bed ONLY for sleeping, (no worrying, stressing, or thinking of tomorrow!) I try not to use any verbalization in my sleep, just visualization. I'll also focus all my attention on my breath, in, out, while simultaneously relaxing my muscles (particularly the face, jaw and neck,) and repeating in my mind, "I am so tired...I am so...so tired...I am in a state of total relaxation.." Usually will put me out in a matter of minutes. :)

  11. Exercise morning: 6 hrs
    Non-exercise morning: 7.5 hrs

Damned if I do, damned if I don't. I hate working full time and commuting.

(Dang, I'm in a funk today! Time to get outside for a brisk walk and some Vitamin D soak!)

  12. @Jess - I too have a similar routine that someone told me about where you tense each limb up, and then relax it (each limb separately) and then the same techniques in the face, jaw, neck. He asked me "how did you like the relaxation technique?". My answer, "I don't know, I can't make it all the way through without falling asleep!"

I guess that's the point though!

7-8 hours, out which one hour is disturbed sleep with snoozing. I must learn to wake up w/o an alarm or at least set my alarm for the actual time I'd wake up. On weekends, I sleep 9-10 hours. I'm usually in bed by 10:30-11 and up by 5:30-6:30 on weekdays.

I think I average about 7. My sleep hours echo LovestoClimb. In bed around 10pm, up at 5:30am. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night. I'd prefer to get 8-9 hours, personally.

Usually try to lay down by 11:30 and my body wakes up around 6 - 7. No alarm here, but since I'm a light sleeper any little noise out of the ordinary will wake me.

Ugh, this is a hard one for me, too. I do best on about 9 hours which I NEVER get during the week. I forgot to set my alarm last night, overslept, and got over 8 hours of sleep--so despite being a stress case and totally late to work, I did recognize the silver lining--lots of sleep last night and I feel great!

I generally get 6-7 hours. Try to get to bed by 10, usually that means sleep at 10:30 or so. I get up around 5:30. I despise my alarm clock.

  17. I'm a world champion sleeper, always have been. I'm also a night owl. I rarely go to bed before midnight, and it's usually closer to 1 or 2 am. I wake up naturally around 10-11 am. So, that's usually around 9 hours or so of sleep. I have been known to sleep longer though, and very rarely less. I'm just one of those people who needs lots of sleep, apparently!

  18. I have a very long history of insomnia. Was an avid Lunesta user for many years. I am actually going into week 3 of no sleep aids now and although it was VERY rough at first, I think things are starting to improve and even recall dreams so I know I'm making it into REM sleep. I had a sleep study done and they found that I spent most of my time in stage 2 sleep and I actually woke up 52 times. I am also on day 9 of no coffee so that is helping for sure. Right now I go to bed between 9 and 10 and will be wide awake somewhere between 4:30am and 6:30am. I no longer use an alarm clock. It's so nice waking up naturally.

It's great that you are giving up the coffee and the sleep aid. Let us know how it works out transitioning!

In bed by midnight, up by 6 or 6:30am at the latest. Six hours is about it for me. I work second shift so could conceivably sleep as ate as I want by I'm done after about six hours.

6-7 hours usually. 7 is good for me, but I tend not to go to bed quite early enough, mostly because I spend so long working or getting to work that I want to make the most of my evenings.
I don't sleep in on weekends, as a rule. Once I'm awake I get up - I usually want to go play whatever game I'm into on my PC (I'm an ex-games journalist and am still a hardcore gamer at the age of 42) and being a lark rather than an owl, I am often shooting bad guys at 5.30am. I have to get my fix before work. :)

In the summer and in the past (which I was very proud of) I slep a total of 5-5.5 hours daily. I work third shift-so, I would get up around 12:30 or 1p.m.. I liked it. I would wake up and feel ready to go. Since visiting this site, I have tried to sleep more and have had no problem doing so, but feel guilty. I do not feel any better after having slept6.5-7.5 hours. Actually, I feel worse, Iguess because there is less time to accomplish things and I do not feel as energetic as I did on less. I keep waiting for it to get better, but it has been 1 and a half months and I feel worse and worse. More and more tired, the more sleep I get. ?
