Just posting this for those in need of one. The classic 1963 version of The Haunting:

No gore. No blood. No swearing. Entirely psychological. Not recommended for kids though. Too much of a mind#$%*.

Oh I love that version. I love horrors in general, but that film is a masterpiece in terms of what can be done to scare the bejeezus out of you with just lighting and sounds.

It was one of the films that was an inspiration for Event Horizon (another of my favourite horrors - lots of blood in that one though, but also a strong psychological element).

It's a shame that most modern horrors are more about grossing you out than providing a scare.

I would, however, recommend The Descent, if you haven't seen it - about a bunch of women who go caving and find something nasty. Some blood but it's more about cringe-inducting claustrophobia and the odd boo moment. The characters are decent, strong women as well - which should appeal to the primal ladies who frequent these boards.

    Session 9
    [REC] (Spanish orginal)
    Devil's Backbone
    Paranormal Activity
    The Descent (primal indeed,lol)

Part of my list, but I love these movies (especially the first two!)

I just watched Angel Heart again a couple of weeks age. Great movie: Mickey Rourke at his best.

    Rosemary's baby
    The Entity
    Carrie
    The Thing
    The Omen
    The Amityville Horror

And some of my fav tongue-in-cheek ones:
    Drag me to Hell

    The Exorcist (original)
    Halloween (original)
    In the mouth of madness
    poltergeist
    Psycho
    The Omen
    The Ring
All are better if you can watch it in a pitch black area deep in the woods with a good sound system.

I would also mention Jacob's Ladder although it's not really a horror movie.

I was one of those that liked Blair Witch so I am jonesing to see PA!

The Shining is an insanely scary movie.
The Thing has to be the John Carpenter version and since you're getting that, get Prince of Darkness for the JC double feature.
Classic horror, The Horror of Dracula (Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing) is the best Dracula movie.

    Some more:
    Ginger Snaps
    An American Werewolf in London
    Candyman

The photography and costumes in Burton's Sleepy Hollow rock my world. I also like Queen of the Damned and Underworld for the same reason.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is the best Dracula movie IMO, even with Keanu Reeves.

    The Nightmare Before Christmas
    Corpse Bride
    Coraline

    for those who like animation.

The Others with Nicole Kidman. Scared the hell out of me.

  18. Finishing the new "Halloween" tonight. Not scary, but it's good on more of the 'back story' and true to the original.

I am thinking of watching the "Army of Darkness" tonight. I've been craving 1 and 2.

  19. The new Halloween is pretty decent. Just watched Trick 'r Treat the other night...interesting watch.

Paranormal Activity has a definite creep factor to it.

The new version of Last House on The Left is a pretty brutal thriller.

The Spanish flick 'Rec' is awesome. There was an american remake of it called Quarantine but it wasn't as good as the orig.

And of course, the remake of Dawn of the Dead! AMAZING!

I can't watch any horror movie that has bad things happening to children
    OR
a corruption of something innocent. Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline fall into this. I used to like Tim Burton. Dude needs chill the F out. ;)

man i hate to be the debbie downer but I thought Zombie's Halloween was a piece of crap. No where near the elegance of John Carpenter's original.

Paranormal Activity was disappointing. Did anyone else find the main characters totally annoying? The second the girl was like, "oh i was haunted when i was 8 too" I just turned off... she wanted attention, that was it. She whined throughout the entire film and her boyfriend was a tool.

I'm kind of tired of the "it's real but it's not" horror subgenre. Blair Witch was terrifying because it was done so well everyone thought it was real. These new ones like Rec, Quarantine and Paranormal Activity are so glossed over, so much that that contain actual movie stars!

I second the Dawn of The Dead remake.

Sorry I'm a film major so I'm really critical of movies haha.

    The Box looks creepy.

  22. I don't / can't do horror - but LOVE Event Horizon! "Sunshine" has a similar feel though not quite as intense.

Anything with creepy children I just cannot cope with - I made it through The Ring but not The Grudge, and wouldn't touch the original Japanese versions!

For those more inclined to blood-n-guts, try the Korean films Oldboy and Lady Vengeance (there is another in this trilogy which I've not seen and can't remember name of), or Ichi the killer.

Tim Burton is also ace ;)

  23. Event Horizon creeped me out! Oh and "The Grudge" made me feel creepy for days!

  24. If anyone is looking for a bloody movie, the Japanese flick Battle Royale is kinda crazy. Some definite Tarantino influences and vice versa says the man himself.

French thrillers, go with 'Inside' (so so bloody) or 'Haute Tension'.

  25. OMG, the Last House on the Left was SO good. Love that one.
