Funny CW moments

I was stuck in a carpool to an out of town meeting with some colleagues yesterday. One of them has a PhD in nutrition. Our building hosted a "sno-ball" party, which is a quintessential summer treat in NOLA. Its basically shaved ice with a ton of sugary syrup.
My colleague got the chocolate mocha and then complained when he spill some and stained his pants. Someone else commented that he should have gotten the coconut flavor. He replied, "But I don't want all those saturated fatty acids". Me: /headpalm
You'll gulp down a ton of sugar without batting an eye but fear the notion that the coconut flavoring (most probably synthetic) has "omg! SFAs!!!" in it. /boggle.
Any other CW funny moments from the board?

Yes.
A guy I know who's recently started working out and trying to eat healthy: "I hadn't realised how much saturated fat a cake contains, it's worrying!"
Yes, he's worried about the saturated fat content of a CAKE, which is made almost entirely of white flour and sugar. Sigh.

My non-Primal colleague just had a double-masectomy (not funny), but now she eats mostly raw and vegetarian meals only.....and drinks like 2 cans of diet coke a day and snorts at my eating meat and saturated fat....
:-/

SF- That IS ironic, but fats have been linked to feeding cancers (I just learned). Apparently there are certain fatty acids that certain cencers need, so they tell women with a high risk of breast cancer to go on a low fat diet.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Hey Tara, do you recall which types of breast cancers those were? ER/PR positive or negative or HER2/neu or something else?
Without looking at the literature I would surmise that hormone receptor positive cancers could be stimulated by fatty acids but supposition in this case could be bad.

Tara, but these were linked by 'processed' saturated oils I would bet, no?
Posted 4 months ago # -
Good (probable) catch, SF!
Posted 4 months ago # -
TT. As far as I know, the fats linked to inflammation (and therefore potentially cancer) are PUFAs with abnormally high ratios of w-6:w-3. Saturated and monounsaturated fats should be fine.

Hehe, yesterday my work social club had a buffet breakfast and after my fill of fried eggs sunny side up and bacon I was full (while the rest still ate the pastries, pancakes and toast plus the bacon and eggs) and I said lucky I didn’t bring my lunch as this was enough to last me until dinner time, which was true, and the guy next to me was shocked and said if I didn’t eat lunch my metabolism would slow down and cause weight gain! I stupidly said I quiet often miss meals if I am not hungry and you should have heard them all, oh my gosh it was hilarious, like breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if I don’t eat it I am risking health problems and I need carbohydrates for energy, I should be eating 6 small meals a day otherwise I will wither up and die, etc…it really is a no win argument with them so I just shut up and sat there knowing I was doing the right thing for me.

I love how people pull out the word 'metabolism' like it is some mysterious force that makes you thinner.
If they believe calories in=calories out, why would they worry about how fast food is processed?

Sometimes all you can do is laugh to yourself. I guess I'm learning to pick my battles.
A lot of people can't fathom the idea of not eating grains and excessive amounts of carbs. It's sort of amusing how they just can't comprehend it, as if I had told them the moon is really made of swiss cheese.
I love how this one guy I work with complains that he's always hungry. No wonder. He's always eating "breakfast bars" and Snickers. :P

I had my mom telling me "What are you doing buying so many eggs?...are you eating more than 3 a week?! You will die!"
(In her defense I was buying around 60 at the time...it was organic anti-biotic free for 25cents apiece:p)

What is CW?? I know I asked this in another thread I can't find but I am still wondering what it is? something obvious I suppose.

CW = Conventional Wisdom

Diana Renata, people just not comprehending not eating grains and excessive carbs is very familiar. I was having breakfast with my friend last week, and opted for a cooked breakfast: bacon, sausage, eggs, tomato, mushroom. She looked at it and exclaimed, "oh no, you forgot to order toast!!" and sympathetically gave me one of her pieces (she had gone for a "light" breakfast of toast and jam; I prefer my breakfast to have some sort of nutritional value). Similarly I've had "where's the rice?" when eating chilli.
I also find that my parents just don't comprehend the idea. I've mentioned my new eating habits to them, but they still insist on giving me a ton of rice or potatoes with my meal, and seem surprised when I don't eat it all. I recently moved into a new place, and my mum gave me a big bag of food so I at least had something to eat to start off with... and it was full of bread, cereal, pasta, jam, and honey!
Then there's my Dad cooking burgers. He'll diligently pour out all the fat that dripped off the burgers because he's "health conscious" and wants to avoid the "artery clogging saturated fat", then stick his burger in the biggest, fluffiest white bun he can find, cover it in sugary ketchup, and maybe even have dessert afterwards.

Tarlach-- THANK YOU. ha. It was driving me nuts.

I get a lot of comments about fiber. Like, "You don't eat any grains, even whole grains? Where do you get your fiber?"
Um, they're called "vegetables," and according to Fitday, they're giving me around 40 grams of fiber a day, with a helluva lot more nutritional value than your precious whole grains.

Not so much funny as annoying/embarassing: I'm pretty sure my female roommate thinks I'm crazy now. Before I basically said I was doing gluten-free because I suspected gluten intolerance (which is true, but not the whole story of course; also she has an AWFUL memory about that and will offer me something grain-based at least once a day on average). The other night my boyfriend and I were in the kitchen talking, it was his first day primal and he was going through the sugar/grain withdrawal, saying how bad it must've been for me because I had such a sweet tooth, etc.
My roommate pops in and asks what we're talking about, so I have to explain that we're doing this low-sugar grain-free no-processed-foods thing, and that when you first cut those out you pretty much go on sugar withdrawal, and she gives me this 'you're CRAZY' look and goes "oh, so, like some sort of diet?" "Uh, not really a diet, moreso a lifestyle change..." "A 'lifestyle change'? Uh huh. But sugar is GOOD!"
She's basically been surviving on carbs for a while now, lots of cereal, bread, pancakes, pasta, rice, fruit, etc. We had popcorn one night and she said it'd taste so much better with butter, but butter is 'bad'. I hardly ever see her eat protein or fat. And of course she sleeps really late, is tired a lot, rarely has energy during the day then gets spikes of it at random times later on...bleh.
On a related note: my boyfriend doesn't have a huge sweet tooth but he would eat a lot of pasta and bread and drink soda regularly. On his first day of primal he was pretty much crying to me about really really wanting candy and chocolate and anything with lots of carbs/sugar. Crazy what your body will make you want when it's desperate.

@Madame P: And you don't even need fiber. This comes up frequently here. Google "Fiber Menace" and see what this doctor has to say about fiber.
I'm a Kerouac/Beat aficionado/expert? One of the thing I notice reading On The Road or other period books, was the faith that eating red meat and dairy via milkshakes and ice cream was thought to do one well. I noticed this years before I became aware of Primal, grains, and carbs. The football players would eat these foods, Jack would do so as much as possible. That was the CW of the day, early to mid 20th C. Now we have a different CW. It took 50 years to brainwash the public and scientists, so don't expect any different.
Here is a link where Jack stopped and had a milkshake. Although not identified in OTR, it was the old Johnson's Corner truck stop in what was the south end of Longmont, CO. The page and pictures are mine: http://www.pbase.com/pzo/kerouac_gas_station_longmontco

Does anyone else know folks who rinse their ground beef after cooking to get rid of the fat? A friend, who is very health-conscious in a CW way, told me she does that. I was amazed--never heard of it before.
Posted 4 months ago # -
As in, with water? Or methyl ethyl ketone? That will dissolve all the fat, although you might have cancer by tomorrow!
No, pretty weird. I use paper towels to mop up the obvious excess.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Obvious excess in meat fat? That's a funny CW moment
Posted 4 months ago # -
Ha seriously. When I cook a whole chicken in the oven I pick all of the meat off, put it in a container, then pour all the leftover broth and fat in the pan into the storage container. Gotta fatten up that breast meat!

My mother in law bought me a toaster for christmas, what was she trying to say? She knows I haven't eaten bread in 8 years.
I took it back to the store. Yep, sure did.

Cystal, sounds pretty passive-aggressive to me!

I could have been any of these people you all talk about. But I never cared for the processed stuff though, I ate only ate "healthy" you see - whole grains - spelt, kamut, barley, brown rice, quinoa etc., natural sweeteners like blackstrap molasses, agave (aarrghh!), honey, raw cane sugar. I spent half an hour trimming the fat off a chicken breast! But now I know better.
So, the other day, I made some boiled egg curry for the husband dear, he'd already eaten a 2-egg omelette that morning, so he ate the white and was about to discard the precious pastured-yolks. Fortunately, I managed to stop him from doing that just in time and ate up the yolks. Sigh.

annadragon, sassafrass, serialsinner
I havent done a lit search yet (but oooh how Ive been wanting to!). I just shadowed a surgeon and as part of post-diagnostic care they reccomend a lowfat diet. It makes sense, if the fat REALLY does feed the cancer. But there are SO MANY different types of cancers, receptors, mutations and exceptions that I dont know if that statement is true in all cases. Ill get back to you all on thing b/c I am dying to know.

Crystal W. - My mother does things like that. Drives me CRAZY!
I went to visit my parents yesterday. My mom made these cute tiny sandwiches for my dad and I. She knows I don't eat bread. So, she brings out the dish. I told her "Thank you but I don't eat bread." to which she replies "But it's 5-grain." *forehead slap* Then she gets mad when I turn it down still. She's always doing stuff like that. I guess she doesn't think I'm serious when I say "I don't eat ________."

This is SO not funny, it actually makes me want to cry because it's my sister we're talking about. I was talking to her over the phone and told her how excited I was to have found extra virgin coconut oil in the store here and she said that my cardiologist b-i-l thinks its a bad idea to use coconut oil and that she's using canola oil instead. I want to cry, I REALLY want to cry.

@maba: Another successful brainwashing!
Maybe some of the info on the Weston Price foundation site will at least plant some seeds.
