constipation

I have my carbs around 50-75gr at the moment as I am in the final stages of fatloss and I have some serious constipation despite taking a natural fibre supplement. Any tips please?

More fat?
You know, I was going to start a topic on -well, not specifically constipation but erh, umm.. digestive changes doing the PB diet? I guess some get constipation, some don't.
the higher fat seems to be working well for me I think.
Also, you might want to consider a magnesium supplement taken before bed. Take as many mgs as you need to get things moving. Magnesium citrate is good.

am i right in thinking the magnesium may help sleep too? as this is a problem also for me at the moment?
OK I will try and reduce protien and increase fat a bit; protein has been around 125gr and as I have around 104lbs of lean mass (weigh 126) I can drop this down to a 100gr easily.

Yes, magnesium is relaxing-- it's supposed to calm the muscles. I don't hesitate to take 800-1000 mgs if I need to. You can drop that down when you get relief.

Timely post- I started having major problems over the weekend and yesterday was particularly bad. Will try the magnesium also.

I have rarely struggled with const. in the past - generally it only happened when I ate really horribly for several days.
Over the weekend I started having problems with this and I am totally baffled. I have been eating well. Lots of fat. Balanced diet, PB style. It seems to have cleared up but it was just so bizarre. I hope it was just a glitch, but if the problem persists perhaps I'll have to try the mg.

Are you eating a lot of vegetables? More "roughage" could help if this applies to you.

Try cutting out dairy (and other sources of whey protein) if you are eating it.

I find eating mixed seeds helps me especially the sunflower seeds -

I noticed when I went primal that my bowel movements are a little more infrequent, but have never had any constipation problems.
I had to have my gallbladder removed a few years ago and my doctor warned me that one side affect that I could have would be needing to have a bowel movement shortly after my meals. That turned out to be true, I ended up needing to use the bathroom generally about 20 minutes after the first meal of each day. After going primal that wasn't necessarily the case unless I had a REALLY large meal.
A lot of the change may be due to fasting, I've noticed that if I drink coffee first thing in the morning that usually ends up cleaning me out shortly after even though I won't eat til the evening.Posted 9 months ago # -
Make sure you are drinking enough water and I agree increase the fat.
The magnesium is a muscle relaxant so should get you into that relaxed mode for sleep.

Thanks for all the ideas :)
Well I drink 3-5 litres of water per day and eat loads of fibrous veggies so it isn't that.
definitely could increase fat and decrease protein
i have some raw milk in my coffee but have cut way back on any other dairy and that has never caused problems.
I do have quite a bit of whey protein so that's a thought
Tried 500gr of magnesium last night, slept very badly, but will keep trying this both for sleep and constipation (maybe they are connected?? both have been bad for two months the time I have been on a more severe cut??)
today will try and increase the fat ;)

Jedi, if that doesn't work, up it to 700. Up it until you feel relief. It's perfectly safe.

it depends on the types of veggies you are eating.
not all kinds of fibers would help with constipation, in fact, if you are eating too much "hard, coarse" fiber, it could actually result and worsen the constipation problem.
eat soft, watery veggies, like cabbages, leavy veggies. and cook them soft instead of eating them raw.
avoid coarse fibers like celeries for a bit.water helps but you shouldn't drink that much either.
drink one cup of water along with roughly 30g. of grind sesame(black would be best) and walnuts first thing in the morning. It works wonders for me, even if I eat a 20g carb diet.=)
oh..and if ur lower belly is bloaded, and you haven't done a lot of exercise lately, eat soft veggies and try jump around a bit. (like jumping jack or jumping rope)

I use Paleo-Fiber from Designs for Heatlh. Works like a charm!

Jedi... did the magnesium work? :)

Its 18.30 PM here so I will let you know tomorrow morning :) but will up the dose as you suggested. Doyou take it like an hour Before bed?

Doesn't having to take something "extra" like magnesium or a supplement mean something is wrong with the way of eating? I mean, shouldn't the body function as it is supposed to if we are eating correctly?

What primal foods are high in magnesium content?
Posted 9 months ago # -
@hi, depending on how old you are and what your history of food intake has been like, could predict whether or not you need to supplement, eg, as we get older some of us find it more difficult to absorb certain nutrients and leaky gut is very common, drinking too much fluid will flush minerals out of the body. also any disruption from toxic overload will interfere with absorption too. So even if you are eating correctly you may not be absorbing what you need.
primal foods high in mg
Pumpkin seeds 532mg
(177mg/ 1/3 cup)Almonds 300mg
(100mg/23 almonds)Brazil nuts 225mg
(75mg/8 nuts)Walnuts 158mg
(53mg/7 walnuts)Spinach 80mg
(about ½ cup cooked)Broccoli 30mg
(about 1 cup chopped)Banana 29mg

Thanks for the list, 62Shelby! It appears I am getting plenty of mg :). Funny how we are constantly hearing of the mg in bananas when it is at the bottom of the list!

Actually magnesium deficiency (in spite of many foods that contain it) is very very common and is possibly of epidemic proportions due to mineral depletion in soil. Supposedly 80% (well, Americans, not sure of the rest of the world) are deficient in magnesium.

I do have quite a bit of whey protein so that's a thought
That's your problem I would guess. Some people get diarrhea from whey, some get bloated and constipated.

You can take Senna (leaf) tea for immediate relief (aka "Dieter's Tea"). I used to take a cup of the tea and a ton of Magnesium every night before I went to bed and I always had a nice bowel movement the next day. (1 tsp for starters and then increase until bowels are loosened. You can continue to increase a bit more from there).
Funny thing about PB, is today, I SWEAR I lost 5 lbs over the course of the day. My pants are falling off of me, I can't stop peeing and my 'eliminations' are the consistency of when I used to do 'toxicity cleanses' (ie 'Sludge' that falls to the bottom of the bowl).
I am around 1 week into 100% Primal and have been losing weight on a constant 1 lb every 2 days!
Anyway, yes, along with Vit D, Magnesium is the other deficiency that 80% of Americans are thought to be suffering from. I just get that citrus Magnesium Powder from my Health food store.

Sleep Update: took 650mg again of magnesium last night and slept 6:37 but couldn't fall back to sleep when awoke at 5.00 AM, only awoke 11 times, so overall improvement. Will try again tonight.
Constipation still not resolved yet, but these things can take time
Posted 9 months ago # -
Go ahead and take 1000 mgs - seriously. I've done it before when necessary.
11 times huh?
That must be annoying. How do you feel during the day- rested or not so much? Probably not I'm thinking.Hope everything smooths up for you-- sleep wise and the other smoothable issue :)
Posted 9 months ago # -
11 is good, usually I wake 20 times. I have wondered about going to a sleep clinic. Basically I feel exhausted at the moment :( OK i iwll try 1000mg ;)
thanks for the input :)

Might be a good idea. Nothing is worse than a bad night's sleep!
How's your estrogen?
